http://twitchy.com/2013/10/01/surprise-obamacare-health-insurance-exchange-websites-dont-work/

Despite the fact that this particular article was posted at 6:45am, more than an hour before the exchanges were even set to open, the point remains - no one in the country can sign up for healthcare right now because they don't even have a functioning account creation process

Have you actually tried to go to healthcare.gov yourself? It loads fine for me and takes me immediately to start applying for the NC marketplace.

I assume some users may experience issues due to the number of people accessing the site, but it seems to be working fine now

I have attempted to do so myself. It's the 3rd page of the account creation process, first you do name/email, second you do username/password, and third are these security questions that aren't showing up...

If they fixed it, they would have had to do so in the last 10 minutes

I made it past that point... but now I don't when I tried to get a screenshot

It's not a big deal, enrollment is open for months and this initial surge of people trying to access the site will go down.

Yeah, no security questions showing up.

I'll probably give it a couple days. I'm planning to get insurance through my work anyway, but I was just curious how it would compare.

I just want to reiterate because I've seen the opposite posted many times since this morning, this problem is NOT related to traffic aka "well of course it's busy"

that is not the problem here. somehow, through the years of planning and design work and web development of the website, no one checked to make sure an actual user account could be created...

explain to me the process where web traffic could make the entire rest of the site load speedily but a dropdown list fail and i'll eat my words.

this is a facepalm, not a "just try again later"

Tried to make account around 3 AM. Got through all the steps, including the security questions, and then saw "an account cannot be created, an error occurred."

FWIW, there is no NC marketplace. The state government turned down the money that would've made it available.

Went through just now trying to make an account and although I saw the security questions and chose questions and answers, it kicked me back saying my answers matched when they didn't. Something wonky is going on.

Make sure you're not putting the letter "G" at the end of any of your words.

Remember, you're poor people, and you have to talk like Obama does when he's addressing poor people.

I created one back in August; the site was open and taking registrations back then, although the ability to search plans didn't begin until yesterday.

ha, this is comical. I figured I would go to the site to see what all the issues were about or if there were no issues, just see what was offered. At the end of the registration the verification link was emailed, and i clicked, literally within 10 seconds of receipt, to which I got the response that I had waited too long. Then tried again and it said it could not verify, but to try later, a third try got the same response as the first. nice try america

The website could have an asinine design where it has to query a database every single page load for the values that should be in that dropdown. If enough people hit the page at the same time, the database can't respond fast enough to the exact same query for the exact same data; thus the dropdown is empty.

Would you not have the database mirrored on multiple servers to offload request strains? Even I know that.

You are assuming competence of gov't programmers. That's usually not a good assumption.
Even then, continuously running the exact same query that tends to return the exact same result is absurd, even if you do it over a load-balanced set of database nodes. Cache the stupid list and be done with it.

your explanation (also present in the article) explains why I don't have to eat my words. because that is still an asinine design issue and the problem doesn't stem directly from the traffic. yes the traffic made the design flaw prominent but it was a rookie mistake even without the traffic.

Lol

They're probably using a lot of PRIVATE contractors.

Pretty much every major company has had problems like this, including amazon.

The fact it hasn't entirely buckled, and they've been rolling out updates live, continuously demonstrates someone there knows what they're doing.

Are you people just bitching to be bitching or do you really have some important need to get in on Day 1? Shit happens. You can take down any server with enough traffic. This is nothing unheard of in the tech world.

I'm pretty sure this is the first website to ever have some bugs upon launch and the first government program to ever get off to a rocky start. Thanks Obama.

A vast majority of potential users not being even able to setup an account and apply which is the main function of the site is not _some_ bugs. Even by normal software launch standards, this was piss-poor. Realistically, it probably could not have gone worse--particularly with the political implications.

As hard as it is to believe that 3 years after passing the law, they still don't have a working website...

it's even harder to believe that they didn't realize what the 800 number for the exchanges spelled out.
