I wish we'd won 1-2 more of these OOC games against bigger schools, but I love the improvement we've shown this year. I hate reading places like Pack Pride that expect us to have gone from the past 5 years of Lowe basketball to a top 25 team in one offseason. Other than Leslie and Brown we didn't have anyone who could compete athletically with Syracuse, and if a single starter was ever taken out of the game everything went to hell. The starters looked pretty solid tonight though, we were a couple of Wood 3's or a non-cramping CJL from that being a very close game down the stretch.

It absolutely sucks that in 3 of our losses Leslie hasn't been able to play down the stretch in key moments, he's the only one who can alter any kind of shots. I'd just like to see some kind of improvement and contribution from our bench in ACC play before adding huge pieces to our team for next season.

To be fair, the people on PackPride are used to winning national championships and going to the elite eight regularly. I'd be pissed off, too, if people were taking the greatest pride in very low standards when I know much better basketball and much better players played here back in the day.

Way too much orange at the RBC/PNC last night; what the fuck is wrong with our season ticket holders? That being said, State crowd was great throughout.

Syracuse is really, really good. Agree with many folks here regarding our bench, which is exposed against legitimate competition. It would be nice to have CJL giving us more than 20-25 minutes/game. However, he is maddeningly inconsistent when he does play. At some point the dude is going to have to develop a back-to-the-basket game. He has ridiculous athleticism but he's too small to bang and his post moves are non-existent. Again, it speaks to our lack of depth; I feel like a stacked team would develop him as a face-up player (particularly since he projects as a 3 at the next level). Simply put: he has to be more than a highlight machine/rim protector if we want to do anything this year.

My first home game in a while (since i moved 1200 miles away) and i have to say our crowd fucking sucks. The only peope that were loud were the student section, who eventually got outchanted by the Syracuse crowd. Pretty fucking poor effort by the fans for a team playing vs the #1 team in the country. If we ever dream of even being a good team someday this shit has to change. Its louder at a canes game for christs sake

In terms of pure talent we really aren't THAT far away from a Top 25 team. If CJ stays next year and all of our incoming recruits qualify no reason we shouldn't EXPECT a Top 25 team.

I came away with a new respect for Syracuse. I didn't think they were a worthy #1 team but they looked really, really good in a tough road environment. I still think they are a 4-5 loss team in the Big East this season but they were better than I expected.

and the crowd did suck. has sucked. and will suck until we start winning. which use to not be the case. 6 years of Les, after ten years frustrating Herb teams (least they had some good wins here and there, but fuck you wanted to pull your hair out watch his teams play), and 5 years of sid losing

people are like fuck it i'm out.

F a cheer sheet to, if anything we should do the HOOPS MALONE chant

yea i'd imagine the crowd will return quickly if we have any small taste of success. i just couldn't believe how much orange was there last night. i guess it's all the carpetbagging new yorkers who live down here?

also, the coordinated motion during opposing free throws looked good from the 300s.

Not to start the "most of you haven't played sports" meme, but doesn't Cjl have a deep thigh bruise?

And if so, has anyone considered that could be the cause of the cramping?

Terrible effort from the bench yesterday. Gottfried big mistake by going to it so often. Play the guys more minutes Jesus.

Also not sure why we play zone at all. we can't defend the 3 in man to man we sure as hell can't do it in zone. the staff has to figure out how to have an effective defensive scheme, not great just effective. It make are O work so much better.

of course the whole team hasn't play D for the last 4 years, so i guess that takes awhile to learn.

11 threes with over half wide open looks

Also think Zo needs to be selfish at times like when Calvin and Howell are playing like shit, and take over the game. i think he is capable to putting the team on his back and creating his own shot.

i just checked the box score for the first time. I guess it wasn't really Gottfried's fault they didn't play much at all (esp considering ~10 of the mins were subbing for CJL's injury.)

This was just one of the worst bench efforts of all-time.

They produced this UNBELIEVABLE combined stat line.

35 mins, 2-7 FG, 4 pts, 2 reb, 3 ast, 1 stl, 0 blk, 3 to, 6 pf.

UGH. Impossible to win when you get that and Syracuse gets like 40+ points off the bench.

I didn't think our crowd was that bad... definitely better than a usual home OOC game. I think the 'Cuse fans having decent numbers may have skewed some of your perceptions. They had some good chants when the place was quiet (offense, free throws, etc).

My favorite was all of them whoopin' it up outside the RBC like they'd just won the national championship or beaten a real contender....back to Cary with all of you already!

Eh, maybe it sounded different on tv, but I thought the crowd was great until the last 5-10 minutes when Leslie was gone and things had gone south. Prior to that, the Syracuse fans were drowned out fairly quickly when they tried to get a chant going (except when they did it during our free throws, but what the hell are you gonna do for that -- make more noise?).

It didn't look like they had just a shit ton of fans there. They just had enough to get themselves heard in the quieter moments and at the end when everybody was headed for the doors. UNC definitely shows up with twice as many, if not more.

The students did a good job (i miss sitting down there, no rowdyness in the 300 level), but the 300 level was bad, that's probably the must fans from the opposing team i've seen. and from the 300 level they were not quickly drowned out. CAN'T STAND YANKEES!

The season ticket holders have drop steadily (economy and shitty Bball) over the years and until we build that back up it wont get much better. my seats keep getting better and i'm at the same level of giving.

Gottfried said after the game that Syracuse had not been shooting well from out there, and that the entire NCSU defensive game plan was to keep them out of the paint. Gottfried said, "If you had told me before the game that Syracuse was going to take 25 threes, I'd have said, 'Ok, I'm good with that.'..." No one expected them to have a three point shooting fiesta against us, it's just one of those things.

Still doesn't mean you let D1 college BBall players have so many open looks. especially after they knock down those open looks.

we got lucky to start the second half, in that they cooled off cause they missed 3 or 4 wide open looks.

The perimeter D has got to improve, i have no clue how. otherwise team with good three point percentages are shoot 15 for 28. we were poor at it last year and so far this year.

I don't really think he had too much of a choice. The starters played well, but there were still some really poor plays from guys like CJW and Howell and then when CJL went out he was forced to use guys like TBDV and Painter more. I can't wait until next year when we can run 8 deep and all of them being legit ACC players - same goes for the defense next year in that it'll be nice to have guards who can play better perimeter defense.

And yeah Syracuse fans are up there in my least favorite fan bases now. I've never seen that many visiting fans after a non-rivalry game talking that much shit when leaving an arena - especially when you're number 1 and you just beat an unranked team.

Is this the excuse for bad perimeter D? We have had bad perimeter D all year. And if that was a game plan, you change it in the second half.

Furthermore, the default configuration for a college defense should be to stop the 3 pointer and pressure the perimeter. The risk of pressure defense is the drive, but most teams won't turn the drive into points. The benefit of pressure is easy points off of a turnover and preventing the other team from starting their offense from their favored positions.

Syracuse does

Some of the best penetrating guards in the country, and they have like 12 of them. Our guards are slow as shit and got destroyed anytime Syracuse penetrated.

Probably already been discussed but:

Howell played 31 minutes with a +/- of 3
Painter played 10 minutes with a +/- of -21

With the difference in off-court vs. on-court +/- it's 22 to -26. That's a sizeable difference.

most of the cuse fans were in the 300 levels and they were probably louder than any opposing fanbase i've seen at the rbc center. i thought the "boos" or w/e was just the syracuse fans shouting "scoooooooop" whenever jardine scored (idk if the boo thing was a serious comment). syracuse's depth really shows the difference between a pretty good team and a potentially great one.

also, i thought our freethrow defense was surprisingly stout in the first half.

We are ranked #320 in the country vs the 3pointer this year with opponents shooting a blazing 44% against us from the perimeter.

Our defense overall is barely in the top 200. It's completely u.acceptable for a major conference team not to be ranked in the top 100.

The defense being played this year is a culmination of bad habits learned during the Lowe era that Gottfried has not paid proper attention to thus far.

Without immediate improvement in this area we will definitely not finish above .500 this year in the ACC. The offense is good but not good enough to completely ignore the other end.

honestly the 300s is what makes the RBC Center so loud. it's amazing the difference in noise (Canes games especially) when those upper corners are filled. the noise just reverberates all the way down.
