P.S. If you've never seen a goalie fight, you haven't watched enough hockey. On top of that, Ray Emery had a habit of fighting non-goalies in Binghamton.

when basketball players do it, its the ugliest event in sports history

When boxers do it its a multimillion dollar event, who cares? The point is, it is and has been a part of hockey and it never was a part of basketball.... so when it happens in basketball its just people with attitudes getting pissed off.

because nba fights are gay...look at melo and his bitch ass punch and run he did this year...or artest going into the stands. bunch of overpaid bitches who would get worked over in a fight like they have in hockey. hockey is about 6 tough as nuts guys slamming each other into the ice/boards/each other for 3 periods with no let up.

OMG BOXERS ARE THUGS BECAUSE THATS ALL THEY DO IS FIGHT...

read my friggin post from above... It's all about the attitude of the players in the NBA now..

hockey has always had fighting... in hockey, its about sticking up for your team mates... in basketballs its just about fighting for yourself..

There is no logical argument

what double standard? maybe if you actually watched hockey instead of just the highlights you would see that their is more to the game then what sports center shows you.

so because hockey has always had fighting that means its ok? more like it means hockey has always been a thug sport

sticking up for your teammates? you mean like what stephen jackson and jermaine oneal did for their teammate ron artest?

if hockey rinks didnt have barriers the hockey players would be fighting in the stands

i mean when baseball has dozens of players get into a brawl it gets forgotten about in a week

but oh noes@! ron artest is just a thug! worst athlete ever! nba is nigger brawling association!

if anything the fact that hockey has fighting as a part of it should make it a more thug sport than basketball...basketball has a lot less fights than hockey...they dont encourage or allow fighting...so how is it "omg fucking monkey motherfucker go have some more illegitimate kids god damn tyrone"

i did think it was funny though when goalielax didnt try to reassert his "all nba players would get killed in hockey fights" rationale once i reminded him there are 7'0" 320 pounder in the nba

please read that, or at least part of it.

NBA fights almost always involve sucker punches. Hockey fights are agreed upon, see (pay close attention near the 1:06 mark): http://youtube.com/watch?v=5zNUTSTRnz8

what code did Todd Bertuzzi follow? The "I'm pissed at this guy so I'll try to fucking paraylze his spinal cord" code?

And before you tell me "the majority of fights are not at all like that" remember that the majority of NBA fights are not at all like the Indiana/Detroit brawl

I know not all fights are like that brawl, but in the big "fight" this year, at least Carmelo threw a sucker punch.

Comparing Bertuzzi's dip-shittery to a hockey fight is like comparing Raja Bell clotheslining Kobe to an NBA fight.

BTW I don't think you'll find too many hockey fans who don't think Todd Bertuzzi is a thug.

fighting in hockey is and has always been a part of the game.

fighting is not a part of the game in the nba and never has been.

you want to change that, fine. put a barrier up between the court and the fans and institute penalty boxes with 5 minute and 10 minute majors and game misconducts.

problem solved.

i just think its easier for a casual hockey fan like myself who doesnt follow the league too closely to pigeonhole bertuzzi's actions as the norm in hockey

cause its definitely easier for casual nba fans to think artest the typical nba player, and artest during that brawl specifically...bad apples in every sport

one of the best things about going to a basketball game IS the closeness in proximity to the court...sure you can get close in lots of sports but there is usually some kind of barrier/height difference

but aside from the artest incident and an incident with antonio williams a year or two later (in which he was suspended for 5-10 games for going into the crowd, to PREVENT a potential confrontation between his wife and someone else) i dont remember anything else that involved the fans

i also think a bench clearing brawl in baseball gets 1/10 the coverage and scrutiny of a fight in the nba because baseball isnt painted with the "thug" image like the nba...they are painted with the steroid image i guess...hockey kinda has the "care?" image and nfl has the "i pwnt all other sports" image

That's like saying that violence has always been a part of life in the Middle East, so it's ok there, but not in America.

People can spout BS about a "code" and a "guideline to retribution" all you want, but you can't just laugh it off when guys in one sport get in a fight and cry of the apocalypse when guys in another sport do it. Especially since I can't remember the last time a guy was actually injured in an NBA or MLB fight, while just last week some guy had his skull fractured when he hit his head on the ice during an NHL fight. Obviously it was an accident, but what if he never plays again? Is it still "just part of the game?"

Other hockey organizations all over the world (including the Olympics) have outlawed fighting, and the NHL could do so to. They don't, because they don't want to get demoted from whatever lousy cable channel they're currently on to some even lousier DirectTV extra channel.

ATTENTION EVERYONE PLAYING THE RACE CARD

THE GUY FIGHTING IN THIS VIDEO IS BLACK

KKTHXBYE

Also, the other hockey organizations in the world that have banned fighting have tremendous problems with cheap shots and stick work. Perhaps this sounds callous, but I'd much rather see one guy suffer a head injury from a fight that he deserved to be engaged in than see three guys lose eyes from stick work.

The Olympics is a completely different issue from an NHL season. It's a two week tournament. The deterrent for stick work and cheap shots is the threat of an instant suspension. Even a three game suspension in the Olympics could mean the rest of the event, so guys keep a closer watch on their actions.

Minor hockey associations have banned fighting because they're dealing with children and there's simply no reason for children to be taking retribution. Junior hockey, on the other hand, practically encourages fighting and treats it with the highest degree of honor, forcing the removal of helmets. There's no fighting in college for a pair of reasons: the shortness of the schedule is comparable to the Olympics, and the mandatory cages make fighting impractical.

The NHL doesn't have any of these built-in deterrents. The players have to take care of it themselves. They've been severely handicapped by the instigator rule, and as a result we've seen cheap shots and subsequent injuries rise in the past few years.

In hockey, it's a retribution for a cheap shot and it always seems to be just punching. NBA players get "pissed" and you feel like they're going to shoot each other after the game. They're out to kill when the hockey players are out to just make a point. It's no different than baseball benches clearing when someone repeatly gets hit with a ball.

you sure you're not thinking of that other classy sport soccer?

and in basketball when you hack somebody...they call a foul...if you're shooting or in the penalty, you get free throws

you dont jump over a wall into a box

Eh, not the best hockey fight we've seen all year. But a goalie match is always worth the price of admission

GG Emery fighting with the biggest shiteating grin I've seen in a fight so far tho. The guy is just ottawa's only player with balls. thus their lack of rings.

Also that was a late shot on Druuuury. I mean come on refs, not even a minor for that? Elbowed to the frackin dome piece and you get nothing?

[Edited on February 23, 2007 at 2:22 PM. Reason : silly refs]

^^are you blaming the NBA for its fans and for NFL players like Pacman Jones?

and yeah some shit went on at nba all star weekend..i dont think anyone employeed by the NBA got into a single bit of trouble though

and people had this perception long before the all star game...i think it was (heaven forbid) a few high school players got drafted in the same draft...oh my!

that young man is wearing baggy jeans and has corn rows! oh my he must want to shoot me!

but this is the hockey thread so i'll leave the nba/nhl stuff alone for now

Boxers don't fight, they box.

If it broke out into a brawl with one guy tackling the other and them grappling on the ground, you can bet it would be a big deal.

Besides, this is a worthless comparison, you are tying to say that exchanging blows is a part of hockey like it is a part of boxing, but you are completely wrong.

Find me a hockey rulebook where it says the players are supposed to fight and the winner gets a point.

holy shit you people are faggots

its hockey, they fight, they always have. they dont bitch slap and run away. melees aren't breaking out in the arena. fans arent running onto the ice to get a piece of the players, random players arent jumping off the bench to bash someone with a helmet. no one is throwing chairs or drinks or food.

get the fuck over fighting in hockey. stop playing the race card. stop talking about double standards.

Shut The Fuck Up.
