I don't care what people's sexual preferences are, but I'll be damned before I pay to have people tell me that I'm not capable of judging right and wrong.

Initial Marketing $50,000 (pamplets, literature, maybe a conference, etc.)
Misc. Program Costs $50,000
($200,000 cumulative)"

Ok..I'm going to consider the LGBT a club. As such, it should be run by volunteers. So I'm going to eliminate the first three things, which saves 85,000.

Furnishing...15,000? Are you insane? NC State surplus would be able to provide alot, and since its an NC state club, I'm sure you guys could get access to the surplus building before the public does.

initial Marketing...50,000. Wouldn't be hard to create an initial buzz for this. PLus you have tww, facebook, and my space. Conference..perhaps you could get one the people at student health to speak. Pamplets and literature..lets go with 5000.

Misc Program Costs...this is what fund raisers are for.

I don't see this costing more than 10,000.

As I've said, instead of complaining, why not take some action? Did you even BOTHER to TRY to look up the information?

http://www.ncsu.edu/lgbt/docs/lgbt_proposal.pdf (props to BGLA for the link)

p. 11, Director's Salary + Benefits ($67k-$80k for somebody with a Master's or Doctorate)
p. 12, Assistant's Salary + Benefits ($37k)
p. 12, Operating Budget ($20k-$25k)
p. 12, Startup Costs ($18k) - $10k furniture, $5k technology, $3k resources

1) Volunteers unfortunately won't do nearly as good as a job (consistently) as professionals/paid people typically will, or without some sort of paid support. I'm not arguing for or against having one or the other ... just stating the facts.
2) In general, if you want to impress, and you want the right candidate for a job (director position), you won't go to the surplus, or give them a used computer, or do any number of other things to appear thrifty.
3) Another source of possible confusion (and somebody correct me if I'm wrong here), there are two organizations present. One is a student organization (http://www.ncsu.edu/stud_orgs/lgsu/ - BGLA), the other is a center involved in the student fee's proposal / university diversity / etc.

NC State has desperately been in need of a place where you can go and pick up a third for romantic special occasions.

Actually, LGBT refers to people, not an organization. It stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender. In context of LGBT Center, it simply means a center in support of the community of the people who identify as one of the above. A community of people is not a club.

BGLA (Now called 'Unity in Progress') is a club. The BGLA stood for Bisexuals, Gays, Lesbians, and Allies. BGLA is a student organization which is described on the Project SAFE page as follows:
Quote :
"The mandates of the group are three-fold:

* Provide a supportive environment for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered members of the NC State University community.
* Provide education to group members as well as outreach to the campus at large on issues regarding sexual orientation and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trangender community.
* Provide a vehicle for activism and positive social change on campus regarding issues of sexual orientation and the lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual community.
"

The two are not related, but have a lot in common.

im a democrat with a homosexual family member, homosexual friends, im in favor of this center and I think homosexuality is "wrong" (depending on what was meant by "wrong)

i guess i just dont see why that should change how i feel about anyone or how compassionate and tolerant i am of them

Why is there a need for other centers that single out minorities? Separation is what leads to hate.

I have nothing against Homosexuality, its not my choice but if you want to then go ahead. The idea that each individual group on campus should get there own center or building is stupid however. I mean honestly one big multi cultural building would be fine but not one for just one group. I am pretty sure there are more groups that are larger than the LGBT group. No need to make stupid comments about fag's having their own building. Its just stupid to think that we can have a building for every group. If the measure passes and the building gets built then I hope that every group petition's to get their own building that way we can further divide our campus up.

I'd think that its pretty clear building the center can lead to animosity. I mean, aren't you the one in here arguing we need this because it angers so many students?

i wish they would build one

think of all the HOT construction workers

and all the police men needed to guard them

they could build it next to the navy reserve building

my suggestion is to do it when the Rodeo and Annual Native American Powwow converge in
a vertex of delight

yes, organizations like the proposed one have helped those groups

so unless you would like to show me how exactly the womens center or african american student union have hurt those groups on campus you should probably just drop your point and walk away

Can you prove to me that those centers are the primary factor in greater awareness? Also, find me 10 people that know where the Womens Center is (Witherspoon is primarily known b/c of the cinema and various publication offices/classes that are held there.).

For the record, in the context of this thread and the broader discussion about the proposed LGBT site, the word "community" is an artificial construct. That is all--for now.
