I'll have to check that out tonight. I just bought a PS3 yesterday (the first console I have owned since my Sega Genesis ) and my wife and I also signed up for Netflix yesterday. Netflix and Blu-Ray capability was a big reason we decided to get a system but I did pick up NCAA '11 as well.
How is Netflix over wireless with the PS3? It'd be a pain to run an ethernet cable to where I have the PS3 right now. 10/18/2010 8:46:13 AM |

It has been working pretty good for me. I have not used it a ton though.
So you have to go out and download the app for netfilx without the disc? I thought they would just push that out with an update. Is it free? 10/18/2010 9:39:26 AM |
Biofreak70 All American 33197 Posts user info edit post |
It should be free
I haven't gotten the "no disc" app yet, but the wireless works fine (much better than the wii)
Our blu-ray player still has the best wireless stream though 10/18/2010 10:31:58 AM |

for reference when I get home tonight, where did you go in your PS3's navigation to get the streaming app? (first time PS3 owner here, sorry for the ignorance)10/18/2010 12:36:27 PM |

I turned it on and went to the "What's New" area and it had a little box advertising the download. 10/18/2010 1:45:07 PM |

Same here. That's actually not a bad question, because when I looked for it in the PS store myself, I couldn't find it anywhere 10/18/2010 1:51:27 PM |

Just got the email... I'm glad I don't have to use the Netflix disc... the playstation is our main DVD/Blu-ray player and it is a (slight) pain to have to take out the Netflix disc every time. (First world problem?) 10/18/2010 1:53:25 PM |

Here is the email:
Dear Scott,
You no longer need the instant streaming disc to instantly watch with your PS3™ system.
To watch instantly via your PS3 without the disc:
1) Go to the PlayStation® Network section of the main menu. 2) Simply install Netflix from the "What's New" area.
That's it. There's no need to send the disc back to Netflix.
Enjoy!

Installed last night. Bought my PS3 Sunday night as well as signed up for Netflix that night, so I never got to use the disc (it is coming with my first movie, but I won't ever need it). Because of that, I can't compare to the experience using the disc but my wife and I streamed Brick last night (wireless) and it worked great.
Also, how does Netflix determine which movies can be streamed instantly and which are DVD only? I assumed more of them would be instant streaming than there actually was. The first 3 movies my wife looked for last night were all "DVD Only."

The selection of Instant Watch movies is improving, but it's not nearly as comprehensive as the DVD/Blu-Ray selection. Don't know how they determine what's going to be Instant vs. Disc but it's getting better. 10/19/2010 7:54:03 AM |

Thanks.
After I asked that, I just did a little more googling and did run across some articles that were helpful. Sounds like the movie studios are still trying to squeeze any juice they can out of DVD sales. I think they're just delaying the inevitable though. 10/19/2010 8:01:46 AM |

Since Time Warner is finally getting ESPN3, does anyone know a way to stream it through the PS3?
I've tried PlayOn which works well but I don't want to pay for the service and it'd be a pain in the butt to hook up the laptop to my TV every time I wanted to watch. Any other methods available? 10/19/2010 11:39:40 PM |

Whats the best way to watch video files from a USB stick?
I tried plugging it on, but when I went to Video-USBStick it said no video files found. I even tried placing the files on the root of the USB drive and that didn't help either.
What am I doing wrong? 10/21/2010 2:43:32 PM |

^ make sure you've converted it into the correct format, PS3 doesnt support AVI and mpeg's encoded with certain audio (dont remember which).
you can either use ps3 video 9 to convert your videos or set up java PS3 Media Server (what I use) which will stream pretty much everything except mkv 10/21/2010 2:52:05 PM |

^^ 1. Go to the Video subdirectory 2. Highlight the USB drive folder 3. Hit the "options" (triangle) button 4. Select "Display All" option that appears on the right side of the screen 5. Profit 10/21/2010 2:57:21 PM |

ok, i'm getting a PS3 for Christmas and people are beginning to ask me what games I want. I've searched across the interwebs and noticed a few that interest me, but I haven't owned a playstation since playstation 1......so i'm asking for some advice on what games i should be interested in. I enjoy most all games, so genre doesn't really matter to me. 10/21/2010 4:17:19 PM |

According to Wikipedia at least, blu-ray region coding is apparently voluntary and thus some 70-80% of blu-ray discs are "region free". As for me, I've bought the UK versions of both "Planet Earth" and "Band of Brothers" from Amazon.uk. They're all clearly UK releases, and both have played without any problems on my PS3. 12/9/2010 3:02:15 PM |

Only works with 3.41 Anything above that and it wont work as far as I ve heard . I don't know about the USB thing but its much easier in my opinion to use your cell phone to do this. Youtube it. Very simple. 12/11/2010 3:33:08 PM |

depends on if you want a straight forward action game or something much more open ended. BAA is linear with levels and bosses. It's a pretty damn awesome game in itself, but RDR is still one of the best gaming experiences i've ever had. If you're a fan of westerns by any stretch it's a must have. It's open world non-linear and provides hours of gameplay and exploration outside of the main storylines.] 12/14/2010 8:30:20 AM |

So i think my ps3 is close to death. It will just cut off in the middle of games now and start flashing red, and my roommate said yesterday it wouldn't even turn on. I heard this is an indication of overheating, and the fan might be clogged or just broken. Any suggestions, besides calling Sony? I've had it for three years now, so it's not under warranty anymore. 12/14/2010 9:49:58 AM |

I'd go with Batman. I'm kinda burned out on sandbox games these days (except Just Cause 2, everyone should buy that one). 12/14/2010 9:54:59 AM |

^^perhaps take some canned air to the fan and vents and see if you can blow out some of the dust. And if you have it on a shelf stacked horizontally i'd take it out of there and let it sit out in the open and vertical. 12/14/2010 10:29:41 AM |

I didn't play RDR because I am so tired of that style of game.
I need to pick up a copy of Vanquish sometime soon ... hope blockbuster has it for rent.

see, that's the thing. I don't know what style of game I really want. I enjoy the GTA style games, and I assume RDR is that style of game...open, choose missions when you want, etc...
however, sometimes it is more fun to just go straight through...plus batman is awesome.
i can't decide. 12/14/2010 4:27:08 PM |

sure the missions aren't terribly difficult but half the challenge to me was getting 100%. I felt very fulfilled when I did that.
But the real question is why not get both? Batman is only 20 and I'm pretty sure you can get RDR for 30. Both for less than the price of 1 new release. 12/14/2010 6:22:44 PM |

I have a p3go gt and jailbroke with that. It was very easy and it must only occupy the console during bootup. There are also open source apps to roll back from 3.5 to 3.41 provided you have one of these tools. jailbreak sticks are like $20 these days12/14/2010 6:58:57 PM |

I picked up the Move this morning...it's a lot better than it is in the store. The Gladiator game is awesome, and I mean AWESOME, especially if you use two motion controllers. It's basically Battle Arena Toshinden (sp?) from PS2...updated with better graphics and man you have to move around a lot... i worked up a pretty good sweat playing the entire bronze cup.
The ping pong is also really, really fun. It gets harder as you move up the levels.
The frisbee golf is cool but not too exciting. Havnt tried beach vollyball yet.
Archery is cool but would be better with two controllers 12/19/2010 4:08:59 PM |
