PSN has been charging tax since last month or so. It's annoying, considering it's illegal.

I just changed my address to a made-up CA one (left billing address alone) and it stopped charging tax.

Is it the part where he shoots lasers at the floor? I just stood in the corners and jumped right before the lasers hit the floor. They don't seem to hurt you when they're traveling through the air, only when they hit the floor itself.

According to tax law, the retailer in question has to have an established (physical) presence in your state for the goods they sell to be taxable. (the reason sales tax is not charged for online purchases).

PSN (and Sony) is run out of San Diego, CA. Therefore, they should not be charging taxes in NC.

NC is just now realizing how much potential income they're passing up, and has decided to try and get their piece of the pie (trying to sue Amazon for customer purchase records dating back 5 YEARS, for example). I suspect they threatened Sony and Sony decided to comply instead of fighting it. If you buy stuff on iTunes, you'll notice that Apple just started charging sales tax in this state as well.

Anyway, all of this is a pretty gray area right now, considering when the applicable state tax laws were written they didn't have this problem on this scale. Expect the laws to be rewritten so the government can get more of our money they can then waste, but until then this kind of taxation is illegal.

got my 500GB HDD for the upgrade today.

installed it into the PS3, powered it on, and nothing.

did a little research, and there seems to be a "problem" with PS3 firmware 3.56 in that it doesn't recognize an upgrade HDD...hopefully there will be a fix within the week.

in the meantime, I downloaded the PS3 Media Server onto my Macbook and it's awesome!

so now I will work on either
1) burning my DVDs to my Macbook, or
2) burning my DVDs to the external HDD and attempting to access it via PS3 MS

anyway...it'll give me something to do while I wait for 3.57 to come out.

Fanatik, I think I may have downloaded it. I had the PS3 check for updates, and it said a new update (3.56 had been found). I DL'd it on my old drive...I guess I'll see if it is on the web and download it to a stick and try again tonight.

I just got my email from Sony saying I've been banned from PSN. I'm miffed that I can't use Netflix anymore (good thing I have a 360 and an Apple TV for backup) but seeing as how I've never actually played an online game on my PS3, I don't think I'll be crying myself to sleep over this.

I guess now instead of downloading demos, I'll just have to download full versions.

Sony has lost a customer for life with this geohot mess. Are you really that out of touch with the world as a corporation that you turn on the people who bought your overpriced product so that you could turn a profit in the first place when all the majority of them want to do is find new and exciting ways to use the hardware. youve built an incredible machine. why am i limited to it's use because you say it's only for games you approve of. sony i am dissapoint. keep your psn network and your qriocity. i've used them exactly twice. once by mistake.

and for people who say we agreed to a license or whatever, just think about the implications of saying that you can't forgo the software you dont want to get to the hardware you outright own. i concede that i shouldnt be able to use psn with 3rd party software but that alone does not justify stifling innovation in 3rd party software.

I dunno. I kind of have mixed feelings about it. I think you should at least lose the right to go online with games you pirate. I don't really think it's anyone's right to have all the benefits and pay nothing.

But that being said, I really do think this is the wrong way to go about things. I know I would be SUPER pissed if I cared at all about online games and got banned for just trying out a couple of things Sony doesn't approve of. In for a penny, in for a pound I suppose, but it's weird that they are lumping someone like me in with the likes of the douchebags that cheat on MW2 or whatever and ruin everybody else's experience. And I'd be willing to bet there are way more people like me than people like that.

Nah, he had a message up for a while (until Sony actually filed the lawsuit) that said that one of the big three should get in contact with him if they wanted a truly secure console. He said he thinks it would be fun to work for the other side. And I think he worked for google for a while, I don't think he's completely opposed to working for "the man" under the right conditions.

Also, I should point out that I am an idiot and didn't actually read the email Sony sent me. (I was driving when I got it). It is just a warning. At this point, I could flash to OFW 3.56, renounce my evil ways, and all would be forgiven. It's not gonna happen, but at least I (and more importantly, people that didn't know what they were getting into) have the option. I'll just end up keeping it offline for the foreseeable future.

Not really picking sides or anything but Sony didnt overprice the ps3, in fact they were barely breaking even for the longest time because blu ray was so new (read expensive) to the market. I personally believe you should be able to do whatever the hell you want with the console after you buy it. My beef lies with the gaming companies like Infinity Ward/Activision, who made record profits off of MW2 but never attempted to fix issues with the game or hackers before and after black ops came out. Yet they still continue to sell a game that is damn near unplayable online and boast about having the most sold game of all time yada yada.

Anyone on here having any problems connecting to the playstation network this week? I guess my wife said we got an update Monday or so when she was using it. Since then we keep getting kicked out of the PS Network. Tonight we can't get on at all. I have completely re-entered our wireless info several times with no luck as well as restarted it etc. I even forced the IP, DNS, etc. and it connected but then dropped after 30 seconds (only time it connected tonight though).

Trying to see if this is a PS Network problem or something on our end. No one here has any problem getting any phone, notebook, or netbook to obtain an IP address and get online using the key so I don't think it is anything related to the router. The PS3 is the only device we have this problem with.

So quick question that i (and others) have probably asked before in this thread...

If i get a newer PS3 is there any way to play PSX/2 games? I know it can be modded or hacked to run windows and linux and shit but if i ran an emulator or something on that would it be too intensive for the hardware? All of the original CHEA08 or whatever the fuck ones that were backwards compatible are either like $4/500 on craigslist and obviously used to shit, sold in huge packages with a bunch of extra shit i don't want or $200 and semi broken. I just want to play MGS4 and 2... Was hoping that the MGS4 thing that's coming out for 360 would include MGS4 and i could just keep playing MGS2 on computer or something but that is looking unlikely. A few other PS2 games i still haven't played also
