It's common knowledge that Covid may be more detrimental to people with other health issues like obesity. Nobody is arguing otherwise. I really don't think it's a politicians (or even Fauci's) role to tell everyone they need to lose weight. Most over-weight people know it's unhealthy and they should lose weight. They don't need a politician telling them that. And if they do, they're an idiot.

That's a totally ridiculous argument.

Maybe because it's obvious to everyone that obesity is unhealthy. I mean, it can kill you so many ways. If that hasn't been enough to inspire someone to make a lifestyle change, you think a virus that encourages staying at home and eating comfort food is going to be the catalyst they need to get on a health and fitness regimen? I hadn't heard this ridiculous argument espoused yet, so thanks for keeping it fresh.

Also, the POTUS at the time was himself clinically obese and almost died by trying to keep up appearances and resisting common sense countermeasures because he was scared it would make him look weak. Well nothing shows strength better than almost dying from a preventable virus.

Like...eight? Seriously, not very many. Losing a bunch of weight takes time. Meanwhile, even when the government pushed much easier things - like mask wearing, like a free vaccine - they struggled to get compliance. Compared to those, the lifestyle changes necessary to go from "obese" to "health weight" are a real heavy lift. Pun not intended.

Not anywhere near as many as would still be alive if everyone had just gotten their damn vaccine.

Like, I'm all for some intelligent government intervention to help combat obesity, but you're talking nonsense.

I don't think it's nonsense to suggest more awareness could have been raised about the link between obesity and cov!d deaths early on. And I'm not suggesting an either/or - only advocate losing weight or only advocate masks/vaxxing, etc. - but from a risk perspective I don't understand why more focus wasn't placed on preventable co-morbs. Seems like such a waste.

It's 2022 and I'm still on TWW so it should be obvious I don't know anything about anything. That being said, why is what I asked ludicrous? It's one thing to know being obese may lead to you dying a few years earlier than average when you're in your 60's, it's another to be told being obese could lead to you dying now. Instead, we get stuff like this during the midst of a pandemic.

My doctor said that they are getting ready to start trials on a vaccine for omicron

A little late there.

Should we really expect to get vaccinated every 6 months? Even one of the primary researchers on the Astra Zeneca vaccine said that it's not sustainable to vaccinate the world every 6 months.

For reference, I've been vaccinated and boosted.

First off, it's common sense that if you're obese, any illness it going to pose more risk to you than a healthy person. And second (as someone already discussed in better detail) do you really think if Trump or somebody told the public that Covid is more riskier for obese people, that would influence obese people to suddenly decide to get healthier? And even if it did, that could take months, probably years.

Holy shit, I am truly baffled with this "argument". As Grumpy mentioned, I'm all for a concerted government effort to battle obesity in tjis country, but to suggest that it could have saved any (measurable) amount of lives during this pandemic if politicians just mentioned it more is just ludicrous. (and I imagine people like you would complain about government over-reach for almost any actions they may be proposed to do address obesity)

Right, it's been two years now, that's my point - how many lives could have been saved by making this a focus of the daily cov!d coverage not just by politicians, but by the medical industry, Fauci, etc., the actual "experts" not just Trump or Biden.

Almost none. Because obese people already know that they're more at risk for complications from any illness, or that obesity may lead to other illnesses that will make them sicker or kill them. You truly think that if the "experts" told them they needed to lose weight because of Covid, they'd all of a sudden do it? You're trolling, right? You can't seriously think you're making a good argument.

An Oklahoma City hospital reported on CBS Evening News that they have approximately a 50% fatality rate for unvaccinated individuals with COVID entering the ICU. Way to show the gubmint!

This is so freakin' stupid. It's very difficult to remain sympathetic with unvaccinated people getting sick.

Just a lazy way to put people into groups who don't think like you, I'm guilty of it too. But seriously, I couldn't tell you the last time I intentionally watched Fox News, it's been probably 4+ years. Other than seeing a clip of Tucker or Gutfeld occasionally on twitter, that's about it. Their audience is just boomers and Teenage Republicans now.

[quote]I don't understand why more focus wasn't placed on preventable co-morbs[quote]

A virus is killing people right now, and there are things to be done right now to prevent that, and you're confused why they didn't put a big focus on other things that could be done slowly over a period of months or years that would prevent some of it?

There's a limited amount of bandwidth on both ends. Every minute Fauci spends calling people fat is a minute he isn't promoting masks/vaccines/social distancing/other things that save lives in the immediate term. On the receiving end, people struggled with even those messages - and you want to add more complex and challenging stuff into the mix.

You fat-hating people are a weird bunch. It's almost like you take other people's weight personally, and the disgust with which you discuss the issue is palpable. And it's almost never, "We should restructure American agriculture and food marketing rules from the top down," it's "These gross fatties need to fucking fix themselves." Like, I'm not obese, and for reasons ranging from national security to public health to insurance premiums I would like for fewer people to be obese, but I don't think these people are revulsive.

Thanks to having no time to read or watch anything anymore, I mainly rely on social media and podcasts, but thanks to a short commute my podcast consumption has become pretty minimal. Honestly my primary focus is on local government in my town, but for national news I'll check Ace of Spades 1-2x a week and jump on twitter if there's breaking news. Never watched OAN and only seen clips from Newsmax - they're basically Fox News lite, definitely not some hard right option. Also no, no Shapiro or Crowder and definitely no Owens.

That's not saying much anymore. This isn't 1976 where 30 million people a night tune into the nightly news. I think Tucker averages somewhere around 3-4 million viewers, but I'd guess those are mainly boomers.

Again, this has been going on for two years. My only question has been why haven't the medical expert class just emphasized weight loss more in addition to all the other recommended measures. That's all.

That being said I do wonder the ethics of some mad scientist engineering a version of Covid with no harmful viral activity but still triggering an immune response to build antibodies. Basically like a vaccination that spreads itself. This has happened with computer viruses and if bio tech now is sophisticated enough (I don’t know if it is) to target this type of evolution, would be hard to stop someone from releasing it…

Someone was asking about my opinion on omicron...what opinion is there to give? From anecdotal evidence, I've seen (personally as well) that it's extremely mild. Nearly everyone in my neighborhood has had it. I still don't have taste or smell, which isn't even a prevailing symptom with omicron but oh well. Everybody's cases around me were mild. Some have been vaccinated, some have not, and did not notice a difference between the two.

That's just what I've seen.

But according to the news outlets, hospitalizations are still rising, so it must be pretty bad for some people.

So...my opinion is...omicron is mild?

Or would you like me to opine on the conspiracy theory that it too was created in a lab, to combat the more harmful variants? I've heard that one. I've not heard any clear evidence to back the claim up.
