WTB: SKS...preferably a yugoslavian model, but open to offers.

Also WTB: 12ga shotgun for cheap.

Have cash in hand.

bttt because I"m also looking for your guys' input on a self defense firearm under $400.

That and nobody answered zrwearne's question on the same thing. :E

Open to any suggestions though I'd personally prefer something not much smaller than a 9mm and am looking at getting an automatic.

I'd never part with mine, but you can get some online at
http://www.jgsales.com/index.php/c/c-r-guns/cPath/290?osCsid=ca5f704967c2fa7119c9836723631094

though I got mine on auctionarms.com, but that can be hit or miss

I'm looking at either a S&W .38sp or a .357, can't decide which. My Beretta is nice, but just too big to haul around everywhere.

^^^ there were a lot of answers.

My suggestion is to go to Lawman's and look at their used handguns. Handle and dry fire them. Buy the one that feels best to you.

Get the 357 Mag.
The 38 Special and 357 Mag are dimensionally the same except the 357 Mag case is about a tenth of an inch longer. Since they headspace on the rim, you can load a 357 Mag revolver with 38 Special ammo and shoot it just fine

There's really no good reason to get a revolver chambered exclusively for 38 Special.
The majority of guns chambered in 38 Special are actually made with 357 length cylinders on frames that can handle 357 pressures. In other words you don't gain anything by getting a 38 Special.
There are a few exceptions in some snubnosed revolvers that actually do have shorter cylinders saving you a tiny bit of overall length and an ounce of weight.

Having said that, if you want an ultralight aluminum, titanium, or scandium framed snub nosed revolver and you are absolutely sure that you will never want to shoot high powered ammo then a 38 special wouldn't be a bad choice.
Personally I'd still get the 357 in a light frame just cause I like knowing that I could stuff it with 357s.
Our district ranger has a scandium S&W 642...it weighs less than a can of pepsi loaded and it's definately a handfull with 357mags
He keeps it loaded with 38 Special +P Gold Dots.

You can get some good ammo in 38 Spl and 357Mag.
I keep a couple speed loaders with 125gr 357Mag Gold Dots for my GP-100.
If I had a snub nose I'd probably pick Speer's 135gr 38 Special +P. It's supposed to generate the best velocities out of a short barrel and the 135gr Gold Dot is made to expand well at 38 Spl velocities. They must use a faster powder than their other 38 Special loads...

^ A handful? Only a handful? You're a mean, mean person Fumbler..

Buy the .38 if its a lightweight, .357 if it isn't.

Yeah, just a handfull.
I would have called it a violent explosion in your hand if I hadn't gotten a 480 Ruger.
The 480 with stout reloads puts the 357 in perspective.
If you really want a monstrosity of a handgun then check out the Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan in 454 Casull. A snub nosed 454 probably hurts...

.357 is not really neccesary for close personal defense encounters, unless you're defending yourself against large, thick skinned animals.
As far as J-frame snubbies go, I'd say keep a .38 stuffed with Hydra-Shoks or Gold Dots. .38 is just fine for such a small gun. .357 in a snubby produces an atomic muzzle flash which will blind you after dark, ruins your hearing, overpenetrates and overexpands in human targets, and the recoil will make you develop a wicked flinch. And I'm no stranger to recoil in revolvers either, I like to shoot hot .44s out of my S&W M29.

However, if you are looking at a 4 or 6 inch full sized revolver, the .357 is the only way to go. I'd reccommend an L-frame S&W (686 or 586) over just about anything else in that category. I have a 6 inch model and love it, very accurate and downright tame to shoot, even with the hottest .357 loads.

The 357 isn't necessary, but you've still gotta get it in 357Mag just for the fun factor.
Load up some 158gr Buffalo Bore, hand it to your inexperienced friend, and watch the fun.

Yea. Can be done with a 12 gauge or Mosin-Nagant as well.

I usually favor the 125 grain/1600+fps loads in that caliber.

I am entertaining the possibility of getting a pistol. unfortunately i have never shot any so i have no idea what i might like i was wondering if anyone would be willing to go out to a range or someplace with me and allow me to try out some different pistols. I would be willing to compensate you if you help me out. You can pm me if you would like to help me out.

I was recently offered the opportunity to purchase a CZ 75 B for $400 new or a CZ 100 B for $350 new.

First off, I have the choice of either a .40cal or 9mm for each one. Second, is this a good deal for this pistol? Let me know what you think, and if there are any better options for around the same price.

IMHO the 9mm is a better cartridge than the .40S&W. Recoil is less impulse intensive and accidental bullet setback is less likely to cause detonation due to overpressure.

Both are excellent rounds though and the .40 is the more powerful of the two.

I'm not a CZ expert by any stretch, so I'll leave that to others.

^^

if that's your budget, look at a Steyr from CDNN or Davidsons.. better gun for potential carry use, in either 9 or 40. Tenifer finish, ergonomic like you wouldn't believe, fully supported chamber, full steel frame, LCI, and adds a standard rail.

Also selling my fullsize USP 45 (Variant 1) to go back to a 1911. It includes the following:

Comp-Tac CTAC Holster
2x 10-round Factory Mags
1x 12-round Promag Magazine
Bianchi Accumold Mag Holster (holds two)

I purchased the gun used from a local store, and the hammer strut was bent at the time (causes magazines to not drop when the hammer is cocked), and has not yet been repaired. A replacement strut is $11 from HK, but they are currently out of stock.

Asking $600 for the set of stuff, negotiable, FTF preferred.

I'll give you $300 for the mil-spec 1911.

How many rounds through the 1911?
Does it have the GI pinned front sight or dovetail?

^^ Sorry, but I'm not going below $400 right now. I do not know how many rounds have been through it. Got it on a trade last Friday, then saw another gun Sunday I wanted more than that one (bought it today). Haven't shot it, but it was made in Feb. 1993. The front sight is pinned.

Kinda looks like the GI model (not lowered and flared ejection port) but with taller front sight.
Back in 1993 the gun probably cost $350-400 new.

Without an honest round count, not knowing the parts history (changing springs & buffers), and the age of the gun $400 might be difficult to get.

Good luck.
Let me know if you change your mind.

Kimber Procarry 10 stainless/polymer with a brand new recoil set and target dovetail sights. 2 10 round mags go with it. I would trade for the right Colt Python or might consider the right Browning Hi-power (9mm only).
$550
