hmm, this bricked my ps3 and it doesn't play games or blu-rays. maybe after an update it'll start working again and I won't have to send it to sony to get it fixed.

Do you have the older "fat" model? Mine did that. I tried a bunch of things, even reformatted, but it didnt work. Sony says the bluray drive is dead. 175 to fix.

This happened to me a few months ago with my 60GB. I ordered a new laser off ebay for $50 and replaced it myself. It was kinda scary as there are like 15 really tiny screws you have to remove, but if you have a good set of screwdrivers, it's not so bad. It's been working great ever since.

so i'm thinking of getting a an older PS3 and using it for a gaming console, blue-ray player, media server and to surf the internet. I want to upgrade the hard drive with a 500gb hard drive, split it into 2 partitions and run normal PS3 OS on one partition and YDL on the other (to surf the net and browse stored media). I was just wondering if anyone here has done something similar and how successful you were.

i lost about 3 screws trying to put it back together - or at least i couldnt figure out where they went. I was even following the onlne guide to tear that sucker down. Now, my USB ports wont recharge my controllers and it wont play some dvd.

this may have already been addressed, but i couldn't find it:

what is the most effective way to keep the ps3 cool (beside just sitting a fan in front of it)? i'm looking for something a little more permanent. i have the big fat first gen, 20g, no wifi version, if that makes a difference. it sits on a shelf with the wii and that's it. there's about 6-8" between it and the wii. it typically only overheats with HD games (LBP).

i read really bad reviews about that thing that attaches to the back of it. made by intec i think.

I mean, as long as your house isn't a constant 80+ degrees and you don't have excessive amounts of dust, cooling shouldn't be an issue. Just keep it sitting vertically, it's the best orientation for cooling. I was actually pretty impressed to find that there was almost no dust inside mine after about 2.5 years of use.

it's horizontal, and there's no option to sit it vertically. cooling is an issue. it overheats and locks up/shuts down. i'm extremely hot-natured. my house is never hot. i practically freeze my husband out of it. i dust once a week.

if you don't want to spend money for a cooling unit, i would just try and pull the unit out of its space and set it vertically while in use. may become tedious if you use it often, but it will save the unit in the long run.

i would spend money, that's why i was asking what to do. the hdmi, fiber, power, ethernet cords all run out the back of the tv stand and to various other locations and i don't think they'll reach if i pull it out. i use it maybe 5-6 days a week now that i've just discovered the awesomeness that is LBP online.

I'm pretty pissed about it, I never got around to putting YDL on my PS3, but I've wanted to and am not pleased to have the option removed.

But hey, maybe it's an April Fool's joke and they'll end up adding Other OS to the PS3 Slims out there.

Barring that unlikely event, this seems really pissy. They claim it's a security issue, which is obviously a reference to the recent hacks of the PS3 using Other OS. Their solution is to take away the feature completely. It wouldn't be as bad if they hadn't promised the feature would not be removed after the release of the PS3 Slim.

I just wish the PS3 browser was worth a damn and we wouldn't have to install another OS to have a decent browser.

The new EULA is fun too.

Apparently, they reserve the right to remotely delete anything they think is pirated and to automatically update our PS3s whenever they're online.

Slowly the PS3 is becoming less and less of a nifty little media box with a lot of potential and more-and-more a typical Sony product. Not that anyone didn't see it coming a mile away.

For the record, mandatory firmware updates have always been like this. The moment the system detects there is a mandatory firmware update available, it locks you out of playing games or using the PSN until you update. This is nothing new, but no one cared until they took away OtherOS and the 3 people who used it got their panties in a wad.

Also, the idea that the PS3 could do any sort of major software modification in the background without users noticing should be hilarious to anyone who's ever used one

As a side note, 3.3 updated the browser to the latest version of Flash.

Plus, that's more an Apple move than a Sony move.

Sony moves consist of forcing really awkward, unpopular, and uncommon formats on people.

Help??

for the last two days, my PS3 gets really loud.. is it trying not to overheat? it's happened in about the 5th-6th inning of The Show, and just sounds like it's trying really hard to do something. It's never done this in the 2ish years i've had it.

I depend on my PS3 as little as possible. Blurays and the occasional exclusive title. Last one I purchased and played was Heavy Rain...before that was Uncharted 2 and before that was Uncharted.

This doesn't count games I've borrowed from friends though (i.e. Shrike )

But with HD content becoming more available as digital purchases I've been purchasing blurays less and less.

Another thing I hate about the PS3, although this might be out of their control, is the whole netflix thing. Both the Wii and the PS3 require the disc to be in the drive. Is netflix in an exclusive agreement with Microsoft or can you not install 3rd party apps on either the PS3/Wii?

exclusive agreement.

the disc was a workaround in the contract between m$/netflix to bring it to other platforms sooner.

my PS3 recently stopped playing Blu-Ray movies, but it still plays games and DVDs just fine. It won't recognize a blu-ray movie 80% of the time when I put in the disc, and when it occasionally does recognize the disc it stops playing after 5 minutes or so and just spins the drive continuously. Has anyone had an experience similar to this? I would think it was the blu-ray drive going bad, but the games are blu-ray so that doesn't really make sense to me.

Yeah, the Xbox360 exclusive ends 4Q 2010 so by Christmas you will be able to download it and forget the disc on PS3...

Actually with PlayOn there's no need for the disc

I signed up for Netflix on Saturday around 1pm and had streaming queue on my PS3 by 1:15.

For the next 3 days you can get a lifetime license, after that its a monthly fee.

if Hulu stutters at the beginning on your computer (when its trying to buffer) then itll do the same on your TV but Netflix looks great

I haven't tried out the other Networks but I imagine it'd be watchable if you had a good wifi connection, everything I have is wired but the computer doing all the work is actually an old 1.6ghz AMD LE so if it could do it maybe a newer computer could make up for the processing time? idk

ok cool. and with this PlayOn deal, you just pay 19.99 and that's it (if you get it before the 20th)?

hulu hardly ever stutters on my computer, but i always pause whatever i'm watching for a few minutes just to let it load a little more. Thinking I may get this

i think it goes without saying even if you're streaming HD its not 1080p so if you have a 1080p set you're still going to see some artifacting but like you said its probably best to let it start playing, pause immediately, and then wait a few minutes and let it process some of the stream

my computer is probably bottlenecking me from having better performance but I'm not going to go buy a new computer just to get a little better detail, ill just wait till the actual bluray discs arrive from netflix for that

also theres an option where it can process the entire stream beforehand, that way you can stop the film and resume playback at a later time

[Edited on May 17, 2010 at 11:16 AM. Reason : and lets not forget you're probably internetting/using the connection for other things too]
