Bob Knight always gives him Texas Tech stuff. They first met back when we played at Texas Tech Philip's junior year, and have kept in touch since then.

you kidding? over half of all sports fans are simply frontrunners

most bosox, yanks, packers, cowboys, pats, bulls, & lakers fans pull for their teams cause those teams are good or were good when they were growing up

for instance, i never saw a chisox hat in nc in my life til the year they won the world series and then i saw dozens of them

I remember it was a big to do when Rivers met Knight when we played them down there in football. Rivers always said that if he played basketball he would have wanted to play for Coach Knight.

I am old, Cowboys and Red Sox both sucked when I was growing up until High School... I remember the tail end of the Cowboys being good from the 70s and early 80s, my first football memory was the catch by Dwight Clark from Montana against the Cowboys, crushed my little heart...sniff sniff

i wore a chisox hat all through middle school and HS. i stopped wearing hats in college but i still had the hat.

i grew up in nc who doesnt have an mlb team, didnt have an nfl team and i never cared for the hornets. i picked teams i liked when i was in elementary school and stuck with them.

I think I've finally found a fanbase more fickle than NC State's

All season the Chargers fans' sentiment was "LT is God" and "Rivers is a liability"

Between last week and this week, they've done almost a 180, and now suddenly LT is a bitch and Rivers is the messiah.

Rivers played a very good game yesterday, other than the under throws. Hell of a game by a guy injured. Tomlinson was the biggest ass of al lin that game, running out of bounds and not playing in the biggest game of his career. totally weak.

http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/chargers/20080121-9999-1x21qb.html

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Outsiders might have their doubts about Philip Rivers, but it might be best not to express them too loudly around his Chargers teammates.
“I think people should really back off Philip Rivers because I think that's the gutsiest performance that I've ever been around,” guard Mike Goff said after yesterday's AFC Championship Game at Gillette Stadium.

“Just the fact that he went out there and did what he was able to do,” Goff said. “People might yell at him for making a couple interceptions, but you know what, the man's out there on two bad wheels and he's out there playing his heart out. So I think maybe people now will just back off.”

Rivers didn't lead the Chargers to victory yesterday; San Diego failed to capitalize on three trips inside the 10-yard line and lost to New England 21-12. But on a cold and windy day, he showed his teammates they could count on him no matter the situation.

Rivers injured his left knee six weeks ago in Tennessee and played without a supportive brace on that leg for the first time yesterday. But he had a bulky brace on his right knee, hoping to stabilize a sprained medial collateral ligament and a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament that he said probably would require postseason surgery.

Rivers and San Diego failed to capitalize on three trips inside the 10-yard line.
“Philip Rivers is the most courageous teammate I've ever had; the most courageous guy I've ever seen,” defensive end Luis Castillo said. “For him to go out there and play, nobody will ever comprehend what that means.”

Rivers said in the first two days after the injury, he had “a significant amount of doubt” he would be able to play yesterday. By Friday, however, when he was able to participate on a limited basis in practice, he thought he had “a good chance.”

He said the injury really didn't affect his mobility, which isn't great to begin with, but slowing down was harder than getting started. Still, Goff said it was obvious how much pain Rivers was feeling.

After being sacked by former Charger Junior Seau in the first quarter, Rivers drags himself up.
As he's known to do, Rivers jaws with Chargers teammate Brandon Manumaleuna after a botched play in the fourth quarter.

“The question has to be asked: How many guys in here would actually go out there and play?” linebacker Matt Wilhelm said. “He understood the repercussions of it, but he also understood that if we pulled this out that he was a hero for years and years.”

It nearly happened. Rivers was 19-of-37 for 211 yards and led the Chargers downfield on several occasions, although he was unable to produce a touchdown. He threw two interceptions, one that proved costly, although that one was more the result of a great play by cornerback Asante Samuel than it was a poor play by Rivers, who was hit as he was throwing.

“Kind of an unfortunate play, really,” Rivers said of that interception. “The second one (by Ellis Hobbs) was just a silly decision on my part.”

By that point New England led 14-6 and the Chargers already had reached the Patriots' 8-yard line and the 5. But on the first possession, passes to Lorenzo Neal and Chris Chambers fell incomplete (although Chambers said he ran the wrong route on his pass). The next time down, Tedy Bruschi made a nice play to knock down a pass to Antonio Gates at the goal line and Chambers was tackled by Hobbs at the 5.

At the start of the second half the Chargers again drove inside the 10, but two running plays failed to gain a first down and Nate Kaeding had to kick his fourth field goal. During the regular season the Chargers ranked 11th in the league in touchdown percentage inside the 20-yard line (55.8), while New England's defense ranked 27th (58.5).

“I thought we gave ourselves a chance today,” Rivers said. “It's unfortunate that we couldn't score in the red zone, where we are usually so good. I told Nate he was great; I just wish he could have kicked a couple (fewer) field goals.”

Said Goff: “To not capitalize on our opportunities obviously hurt us in the end. What it comes down to is when you get in the red zone you have to score points, and while we scored three points, it bit us in the (rear end) in the end.”

No one in the San Diego locker room, however, was blaming Rivers.

“We have a lot of respect for Philip because not too many people can do that,” said LaDainian Tomlinson, who was in for just four plays because of a sprained MCL. “Two of them? It's the gutsiest performance that I've ever seen.”

bwahahahahaha..... as Philip Rivers boards his plane on the way home....................

Quote :
"Philip Rivers: Ya betta ask somebodddddaaaayyyyyy

Where's the section for throbbing pulsar QBs who throw fewer picks than Golden Boy Brady? All that dirty, awful sex outside the bonds of marriage done clouded his mind with sin. The mind should be clouded with unreleased sexual energy, dammit!

There's gotta be some sort of football-shaped superstructure for me attached to the plane with shelves of the latest leather bound books on abstainance and items to throw slowly at the wall to ease my animalistic urges.

Agent: I'll have to check on that.

Rivers: In the meantime, I've got a technical question: where can I stow these cumbersome knee braces? If I may, I'd like to keep them lodged in my useless running back's duodenum. I hope you painstakingly searched his bags for unlawful containers of pussy juice.

[slaps Tomlinson on the back, kicks his suitcase]

90 PERCENT READY!? THAT'S WHAT YOU SAID ALL FUCKING WEEK, YOU SMOLDERING SACK OF GOAT LEAVINGS! MY ACL IS SLICED TO MEXICAN RIBBONS AND I PLAYED THE ENTIRE FUCKING GAME! AND YOU! 90 PERCENT GETS YOU TWO FUCKING CARRIES!? WHAT DOES THAT EXTRA 10 PERCENT GET YOU? ANOTHER BLOCK ON A PASSING DOWN? ANOTHER THREE MINUTES OF ANAL, YOU BASELESS FORNICATOR! MAYBE THE ENERGY IT TAKES TO REMOVE YOUR HELMET WHILE SITTING IN YOUR PUFFY COAT ALL GAME ON THE SIDELINES?! BUT YOU COULDN'T EVEN DO THAT!

Tomlinson: coldcoldcoldcoldcoldcoldcoldcoldcoldcoldcoldcold

Rivers: You know what? I've found a new seatmate on the plane!

[Pulls over Michael Turner]

Now let's see you finish the Sudoku without my help, asshole! Hope they give you extra blankets you can swaddle yourself in when the puzzle turns tough. And if you even try to play my Nintendo DS without asking, I'll hang you from the wing by your silly facemask and dangle your vagina dry at 40,000 feet.

Rivers: What the fuck, Turner? What're you doing sitting with Tomlinson? We were supposed to watch Into the Wild together and rethink our life choices!

Turner: I dunno. I was reading the book version and he just flumped down.

Tomlinson: (yawning) Aaaahhh, yeah, Phil. In so much pain, can't move nowzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Rivers: Coddammit. Now I know I'm gonna get stuck sitting next to Merriman. Just wait 'til the 'roid tremors start and he tries to pick clean my head with the plastic dinner cutlery again. And he chews so loud, we use it in practice to simulate crowd noise.

If I have to put up with that, I gotta take a piss first.

Flight attendant: No, you must take your seat, sir. We're initiating take-off procedure. You may go to the bathroom once the pilot has indicated that passengers may move throughout the cabin.

Rivers: YOU ARE BRINGER OF PILLOWS AND DRINKS, NOT THE IMPEDER OF TINKLE TRIPS! You want me to have to wait until we're in the air? What if the runway is backed up and we have to sit in line for 30 minutes? What, then? I clench my fists for lack of sexual AND bodily waste release? Got something on your airline safety card for that? Huh? With clenched fists and soiled seats? Huh? FUCK YOU

[Walks to bathroom door, opens it, revealing Shawne Merriman]

Merriman: RRRGGRRAARRRR! Finally, mobile rape chamber is complete!

[Pulls in Rivers, slams door shut]

Rivers: NONONONONO I'M CELIBATE! I'M CELIBATE!

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH

as is to be expected...it's not his fault that they let Seau thru unblocked for the 2-yard loss on the Turner run...or that turner ran the wrong route...San Diego put themselves in postion to win the game, but in the end, the depleted offense cost them the game

Probably mentioned in one of the threads in here, but what was up with Mike Vrabel blatantly kicking Rivers during his 2nd INT. I know Vrabel was going to the ground, but he clearly picked up his leg to kick Rivers. It worked too. That should have been unsportsmanlike conduct. Anyway just wanted to add that to the thread even though it's probably already been said.

"It must be said. As wonderfully talented and poised as the Patriots are, they do get their share of the breaks. A healthy Chargers team might have been able to turn a couple of those red-zone field goals into touchdowns. And what may have been the decisive moment in the game - Asante Samuels' athletic interception of a Rivers pass - happened because Pats linebacker Mike Vrabel leg-whipped Rivers as he threw.

"I got tripped as I let go," Rivers said. "It was kind of an unfortunate play."

its amazing what playing in NY will do for a players rep (gotta love the hype machine)

for instance, since rivers became the starter in sd, he & manning have each started 32 reg season games...rivers is better than manning in nearly every statistical category (comp %, td %, int %, yds/att, yds/comp, qb rating, net yds/att, adjusted yds/att, adjusted net yds/att, & even has less yds lost per sack)

everyone has mentions how great manning has played of late, but when you compare these 2's stats since week 15 (last 3 games of the reg season & 3 postseason games, including rivers game against the pats with his injuries), rivers has 4 less completions in 30 less attempts, with more yds, yds/att, yds/comp & a rating 10.9 points higher over that 6 game period

but in the media's defense, when have they ever let stats get in their way of deciding how good or bad a player is?

yes, but before yesterday, one of the reason's Eli was supposedly better was because his stats were better, which is apparently untrue.

I'm not really saying Eli's better or anything, just that QBs are ultimately measured with Super Bowls, and Eli's gotten to his team to one, so you should all get used to the media saying he's better for now.

^i know im one of the few, if not the only person who measures qbs more on stats than super bowls (thanks to such great super bowl qbs as doug williams, rex grossman, trent dilfer, & tony eason among others)

i will use super bowl victories (not appearances) as tiebreakers when comparing 2 statistically similar qbs, but i dont think that terry bradshaw, trent dilfer, & doug williams are better than jim kelly, dan marino, & fran tarkenton

but you are correct in that super bowls are how most people (especially the media) measure qbs (for whatever reason)

Today on sports center they mentioned how Eli had played better than every quarterback in the
playoffs and mentioned every one by name and why he was better....except Rivers. They did not
even mention his name.

Say what you want to about that one. Rivers outplayed Manning in every game, including
yesterday considering that Phil played on 2 bad MCL's, one bad ACL, and a knee surgery 6 days
earlier. Fucking media.

rivers has thrown for more yards, and, from what i've seen, been relied on far more than manning. that said, i wont deny that manning is having an excellent postseason.

If only playing injured and gaining the respect from your teammates was the key to victory. Also, apparently playing injured doesn't even allow your team to score a TD.

God, it is just eating you guys up that Eli made it to the Super Bowl before Rivers isn't it?

i can't stand this kind of retarded argument. just because a team makes it to the super bowl doesn't automatically mean that quarterback is better than 30 other qb's in the league.
