I, along with anyone else, am allowed to judge how stupid it is for a drunk driver to drive....do you know why? BECAUSE THEY ENDANGER LIVES

something tells me that BAC=0.15+ means your whole, "they are usually so careful" argument is total BS

i mean, lets not forget that she's drinking underage also.... doesn't really jive with your carefully constructed, "they're so careful around alcohol" story

which reminds me - where were they served alcohol? someone else could also be in a world of trouble

i second that. i created it when i heard the news the morning of the accident as a "get well soon" type of thread and it's morphed into a debate that shouldn't be in this thread. no person on this board is perfect and until one of us is, we have no right to judge or condemn others. i'd like to think that considering the circumstances we can all be compassionate even if we disagree with some of the choices that were made.

hopefully a mod will step up and get rid of this for the sake of emily's friends and family that don't deserve to be reading some of the heartless comments that have been made.

You know, I've refrained from posting in this because I don't want to sound heartless, but perhaps this thread is neccesary. People need to see the reality of what something like this causes. The pain and the anger. Leave the thread. People need to understand the consequences of their actions and see how they are and will be judged. See that people don't think that it's all fun and games and see that not everyone views it as a "little mistake" or an "error of judgement". It's a giagantic fuckup of epic proportions, and maybe this thread can help serve as a reminder to some people because it's obvious that even:

Quote :
"her father was killed in a drunk driving accident 20 years ago"

doesn't do enough to deter some people.

someone please explain why we don't have the right to condemn a drunk driver?

btw..who ever made the point that if she had died by some random drunk driver hitting her car, we'd all be calling for her head is right on

""If you have driven after drinking once, you've done it many times. It just happened that this time was the one that cost someone their lives."

Maybe that is true for SOME people, but you all speak way too much in absolutes. It is absolutely possible to make a wrong decision once about your capability to drive and recognize that that decision was incorrect and LEARN from it to make better choices in the future."

She was 20 years old. She shouldn't have been drinking AT ALL. Much less drinking and driving. It may be possible to make ONE mistake ONE time. But in ALL of my experiences (and I was an extremely socially active person for a LONG time) I never met a single person who only drove drunk once. Never. Not one. And as special as I'm sure you think your friends are, they aren't superhuman.

Quote :
" All I ask.. please stop making ignorant comments..assumptions about people YOU DON'T KNOW. If you knew Emily, if you knew that her father was killed in a drunk driving accident 20 years ago, which if course, you don't because you are too busy judging both her and Danielle for obviously being way more socially active than the lot of you.. but if you ever had actually gone out with her instead of just making the assumption that 'oh, well, she parties a lot, so SURELY, she drives drunk / rides with people who have been drinking ALL THE TIME'..then you would know just how damn careful she usually was about this kind of thing because of her father. "

Talk about ignorant comments and assumptions. I'm not judging Emily at all. Which you would have seen had you read my post. You're damn right I'm judging Danielle though. I never said or implied that she does this all the time or regularly. Just that I have no doubt that this was not the FIRST time.

Quote :
"From someone that has been out with her and Danielle countless times, I guess all I can say in my continued defense of them is that EVERY TIME I have gone out with BOTH of them, we always got a cab home OR had a DD. This was not the repeat offense you are assuming (hoping for the sake of your entire argument) that it was, so I wish you would just get off your soapbox.
"

Unless you went out with Danielle EVERY time she went out, both of them or not, then you are making an ignorant assumption as well. And even IF it's true, it DOESN'T MATTER.

I can say "oh I only shot this gun one time, EVER, and I killed someone". It doesn't make me any less guilty, or make the penalty for my actions and less severe. I don't think you or most of us realize what a HUGE responsibility driving is, much less drinking.

Quote :
"...Can any one tell me if there really is a way that I can get this thread locked? As you can tell by my sum total of 11 posts in the past 5 years, I really don't get on here, but was compelled to respond last night after I heard about how out of hand it had gotten. Let me know if you do, thank you.
"

It hasn't gotten out of hand. There have been a bunch of posts by idiots, as there always are. But there has also been a considerable amount of real discussion about this.

Also, your lack of participation in this site doesn't make your plea any more credible. Your friend fucked up, maybe people who don't know her and can speak about her impartially SHOULD be allowed to talk about it.

why? because people are reading it and getting upset? you know what? the time to get upset would be BEFORE you go out drinking and driving. but that's just my opinion.

why do people get pissed off at someone for saying one thing, but the antithesis of that statement is perfectly fine? why should a mod threaten to suspend someone for saying "hey, she deserved it," but statements saying "she didn't deserve it" are perfectly fine? it's either OK to say both or it's OK to say neither. let's not be censoring assholes, here gunzz. If you wanna suspend xienze, then you better fucking suspend lilamy and the others, too.

oh, and I do feel bad for the peeps who are hurting, but only cause they are hurting. I don't feel bad for people who make stupid decisions on the basis that they made a bad decision. But I will feel bad for their pain nonetheless.

This thread is chuck full of hypocrites.

I bet 95% of the drinking population has driven a little tipsy. I bet 85% of those know better, say they don't, say they won't, yet will do it again.

Just tuning in to this after a trip out of town and all I can say is this thread has made me feel lucky as hell. I was a survivor of a serious accident when a drunk underage driver hit my car two years ago and luckily a full recovery for me and my friends was blessed upon us. Just unfortunate that in this case, someone was not so lucky.

Quote :

No kidding. After I was in the above accident I preached to my friends how quick something can happen on the road when alcohol is involved and at best got the message across to a couple of friends... I hope. TWW is a much broader, diverse, and larger base of students/alumni in which the temptaion of drinking and driving affects. Raw deliberation, even if portions are misguided, can be turned into a beacon of hope that this tragic accident might prevent someone else from driving under the influence/sleepy/on the cell phone, etc. LilAmes, the sad reality is if the mods lock this thread your friend's death will only touch those who personally knew her , although I do realize that may be hard to swallow at this point.

For some crazy reason I am reminded how the majority of TWW got behind TPC simply because he stirred shit up and got our attention in an absurd way about an organization that is not so public and which we deemed as petty (and probably still do). Drinking and driving is serious and it's kind of sad to say that this might be the largest student forum for which we can talk freely on the topic. If TWW can vote in TPC and vote out JChichiwak then I would hope it can be an avenue to stir up viewpoints that could at least bring the discussion of drinking and driving to the table.

To me a loss of any faithful wolf packer is sad and I do pray for all those mourning.

I don't drink. I've never gotten drunk. I just think it's a stupid activity to purposefully fill yourself with a substance that makes you into an idiot and lessens your inhibitions. I have, however, been the designated driver for people countless times.

im going to continue to lock up DWI drivers, regardless of how much you idiot college kids bitch about it. the lack of responsibility displayed by many in this thread is immature and sickening for a college population....high school maybe i could expect this...but college. its immature, irresponsible and outright retarded, but i guess when you're a spoiled brat and mommy and daddy are always there to make it bettter, its hard to man up and accept responsibility for things. those of you that play this off like DWI is not a big deal disgust me. those of you who act like any cool person with a social life has DWI disgust me. and finally, those who will fail to learn from this, and the countless other DWI deaths of young people, disgust me the most. you want to honor your friends, then learn from this tragedy

what is kind of sad, is that i found out about this tonight, and brought it up to some friends who i thought might know who she was and hadn't heard about what happened

and the reaction was "i didn't know her, i don't care"

so even something as horrific as this isn't a big enough message to get people to stop drinking and driving.

I know at least 5 people off the top of my head who have gotten DWIs and still drive drunk. And those people drive drunk more often and without hesitation than those of us who haven't gotten DWIs.

I did not know Emily in the least bit. Never even heard of her. But after reading this thread, I don't understand why the message being projected is "What stupid fuck ups. They deserve what they got and are fucking idiots" and NOT "Please let this be a reminder of why you should not drive drunk. It's a terrible tragedy that could have been avoided and the best thing to do is learn from it"

Some of you guys are heartless.

.15 is a lil bit more than a "lil tipsy" especially for a girl who probably weighs 115pds

pretty sure the bulk of "anti-drink driving" posts are not hostile towards the girls and are, in fact, merely strongly worded statements of opposition to DWI

^^
Since BAC is a function of body weight, weighing 115 lbs is irrelevent. A 250 lb man with a .15 BAC is the same as a 100 lb girl with a .15 BAC.

again... its been proven in studies that driving tired is more dangerous than drunk.
But you shouldn't do either... the thing is a lot of people at 2 am are both tired and drunk.

I do agree that if you're tired, you shouldn't drive, however, a lot of people aren't tired until they start driving (esp. for long distances).
So you can't really (or shouldn't) compare that to a person who decides to drive after they've been drinking.

While this is not an excuse, most people just do not realize how quickly drinks add up, especially if they regularly drink and their body can function at that higher BAC. Buzz driving seriously needs to be addressed.

Seriously, a friend of mine had three beers in a three hour period and still blew a .7 an hour later.

Bless both the families involved in this.
