GOV. EASLEY ANNOUNCES LAUNCH OF WINTER BOOZE IT & LOSE IT CAMPAIGN

Law Enforcement Officials Participate in Events Across the State to Highlight Enforcement of DWI Laws

RALEIGH – Gov. Easley today announced that the Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP) and law enforcement officers from across the state will launch the Winter 2005 “Booze It & Lose It” campaign later this week with events in Kitty Hawk and Boone. Checkpoints from one end of the state to the other will take place from Thursday through Jan. 1.

“Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve of last year, 47 people died on North Carolina roadways in alcohol-related traffic crashes,” said Easley. “Our law enforcement officers will be out in full force this holiday season to combat impaired driving and help make the state’s highways safer.”

On Thursday, GHSP officials will be joined by Kitty Hawk Police Chief David Ward at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kitty Hawk. Elizabeth City resident Margaret Twiford, whose nephew was killed by an impaired driver, and Carteret County Trooper G. A. Johnson, whose two brothers died in alcohol-related traffic crashes, will speak. A checkpoint in the Dare County area will follow the event.

On Friday, GHSP officials will be joined by Watauga County Sheriff Mark Shook at Tweetsie Railroad in Boone. Angie Bass of Catawba County, whose son Zack was killed three years ago by an impaired driver, will speak. A checkpoint in Watauga County will follow the event.

Friday night “Booze It & Lose It” checkpoints with the breath alcohol testing mobile units, better known as BATmobiles, will also be conducted in Durham, Guilford, Wake and Sampson counties. Checkpoints in 2004 led to the arrest of more than 11,000 individuals for DWI violations.

You can't spit out a number without a base to compare to it. Is that more or less than the number of alcohol-related traffic crashes in NC in a month's time?

What this really means is that the cops get an umbrella to hide all the petty tickets they will write out for expired things, burned out headlights, etc etc.

Ha. Nice troll. Why don't you just come out and say that the only reason they want to protect people from possibly dying in an alcohol related accident is because they want more people around to pay state income tax, state gas tax, state sales tax, etc.

umm, does it matter? he wasn't necessarily making a comparison, or saying that time period is x times worse than other months. It's just a simple statistic, and it makes people think about it because Thanksgiving is coming up. I mean if he had said December is 2 times more deadly, or just 1/2 as deadly as other months, does that change the fact that we should still do whatever we can to avoid alcohol related accidents or punish those who drive drunk?

predatory towing definitely discourage responsible decision-making.

Tell me about it. The first weekend I went out after moving down to Charleston I was at a sports bar when a "New Alert" came on. They were alerting everyone to tell them that there were checkpoints being set up and where they were going to be. It was also 11pm at the time. The checkpoints were gone by 1am. I mean...WTF?? Who are they going to catch?? And thanks for warning everyone so they don't take that route home. I also have seen or heard of a checkpoint since then. Ridiculous.

is there a certain amount of time you have to get your car inspected. Do you have to pay more or what? My inspection ended in july and i cant get it done now, becuase my signal lights will not work.

So I have a question. Can I get fined by the DMV if I have a car I just choose not to put on the road and therefore don't worry about getting it inspected? Or is that just like if you were still driving with said inspection out of date?

Just wondering in case I stopped driving one of my cars and garage it (might do this when I move) do I just let the inspection run out, or should I make sure to get it inspected, or do I just need to turn the plates in on it so they know its not on the road?
