See, Gamecat, you should have let me antimatterize him.

He mentions "offensive and abrasive speech" in the same sentence that talks about "sanctions." I don't like the sound of that.
Anyways, libel and slander laws have a history restricting speech.11/15/2005 2:12:58 PM |

well, also, the school is allowed to make whatever rules they want to restrict your speech.
that's unfortunate, but it's true
and you really should parse his quote better. NO I'M NOT DEFENDING HIM, but in this case, what he said makes sense.
1.) he says they "don't condone" abrasive or offensive speech. He doesn't say it's punishable; he says they don't condone it. 2.) sanctions apply to speech that falls outside the boundaries of free speech
so really, he's not saying anything bad here.

Speech I make outside of the classroom? 'Coz that's some bullshit if true.

So these two things just happened to be in the same sentence?11/15/2005 2:29:02 PM |

how exactly does the fact that two things are in the same sentence mean they're related?
example: The sky is blue, and shit smells bad.
Does that mean that the sky and shit are somehow related in that sentence?
Also, there is a conjunction "and" preceded by a comma in that sentence, generally acknowledging that the statements before the "and" and after are two different ideas.
oh, adn he can eat my cock too. I'm just tired of college students who can't parse sentences.

Do you people not get the connection here??????
It is not really Oblinger, but the evil mastermind Vizzini from "The Princess Bride"
That's inconceivable !!! 11/15/2005 2:37:43 PM |

I wonder what exactly the line is when it comes to "offensive or abrasive speech". This seems pretty subjective. I personally think it's offensive to see all the peta ads and pro-abortion ads in the brickyard, but I don't expect the university to do anything about it. They need to just realize that most college students are too opinionated to ever have this perfect community all the adminstration dreams about. 11/15/2005 2:43:15 PM |

It's implied. I agree nothing that bad is explicitly stated.

If there's no connection it's a rather random sentence. I'm pretty sure Oblinger's letter was well thought out.
How about this: "We don't like X, and some people could be punished for doing certain things." Don't you think that implies that people might be punished for doing X?
