God forbid these fuckers cut some of the research budget and focus on students and teaching.

"At North Carolina State University, 60 of the course sections have been eliminated and science labs will have fewer materials."

-Where are the lost jobs the title of the article references?
-Of those 60 sections, how many were removed anyways when they redid the timing of classes?
-"Science Labs" and "Fewer materials" are both extremely vague ... doesn't indicate why (specifically) those areas were targeted versus others.

I'm not agreeing with the budget cuts ... but I always question the reasons for increases/decreases and what impact it truly has. (The Chancellor raises I don't agree with ... its a PR/beauty pageant stunt).

You have got to love the second link. Having been a state employee I can relate (and it was the reason I got out of it). A 2% raise once every 2 or 3 years. Keep in mind that the state pays lower than what you would probably get in industry.

Quote :
""There's been discussion to try to get our chancellors up to market," he said. "When we do that, it is in the best interest of the university, in the best interest of the institutions and in the best interest of the students and citizens of the state.""

I kind of question just how much a chancellor brings to the table. Do they effect the quality of education that much? I'd say that the professors have a more direct influence. There has been no effort to get these average joe employees "up to market".

2% on an already low wage versus 8-16% (with an unknown frequency) on an already inflated wage.

It would be nice to know how much money was set aside for chancellor raises. I'm guessing it is still under 300k. 300k is still alot. I guess the lost classes and lab materials will make a reappearance when all the lottery money comes down the pipeline, no?

also keep in mind that they do a LOT less work than you would do "in industry"

they can pretty much kill someone and still not be fired

actually, last i heard... that one guy in raleigh is in jail charged with murder and still getting paid by the state.

To this I would probably say, "You get what you pay for." But seriously, most of the people I worked with would get upset at that idea. Many of them pulled 50 and 60 hour weeks (salaried) for scratch. I guess you could argue that there are some that don't work as hard/much as others but then you'd have a tough time selling me on how those people don't exist in industry.

Ha ha ha ha...

First rule of spending lottery money on education:
Remove education money from general budget and replace with lottery money. Net change in educational funding = zero.

For a recent example: http://technicianonline.com/story.php?id=012367

I know it's not the most reputable source, but it makes my point.

"One chancellor, Rosemary DePaolo of UNC-Wilmington, acknowledged the discrepancy and donated most of her raise -- $14,663 -- to two student scholarship funds, one of which provides financial aid to staff members or their family.

"Due to the limited salary increases for faculty and staff, I felt compelled to donate any raise in excess of 2 percent to support scholarships created by faculty and staff," said DePaolo, whose pay increased to $229,000."

I admire this lady. Yes, her 2% is more than our 2%, but she put her raise more on the line with other state employees. That is cool

And yet every year tuition is raised so that sections won't be cut and profs won't leave, but that still happens. If they would actually put the money they have where they say they're gonna put it and get rid of frivolous "mallets for the chancellor" and "Crosswho?" bands, we'd all be better off.

This is why i ahte those damn people who are trying to stop the raise in tuition. It's these cuts that suck. I'm a physics major and we get the shaft over most other depts. A couple damn higher level astronomy classes were closed because of not enough funding.

Don't think that the raises in tuition would actually lead to increased classes and more lab materials. This is all just a bunch of bullshit. There are definetly misappropriations of funds in this school.
