Two Braves in tonight's Futures Game on ESPN2 are both pitchers: Julio Teheran (top pitching prospect) and Mike Minor

Great series for the Braves this past weekend and week overall. Took 4 out of 6 against the teams chasing them. Santana was great yesterday, but the Mets moved him up just so they could get a win. Braves dominated that series otherwise. Braves pitching > Mets pitching.

Mets will get Beltran back after the break. Here's hoping he re-injures himself and that Reyes is out for a while. Even if those guys are both back healthy for the Mets, the Braves still have a better team top to bottom.

^^ yeah, that is pretty uncool. And Santana wasn't bumped up. He was on regular rest like he has been all year long when we have a day off in a week.

Also, lol at all the Braves fans who used to argue with me about Yunel >> Reyes

[Edited on July 14, 2010 at 12:36 PM. Reason : good deal for the braves -- yunel is a douche]

^ yeah Gonzalez is 33... looking a little old in the infield with the exception of Prado, but still a good trade for this year. AND we got rid of Jo-Jo!

Escobar wasn't that young at 27. I'm fine with it, we get a good SS for two years.

They must really like Salcedo. I could see Gonzalez keeping the job until he is ready

dont know anything about the minor league guys we got, maybe they like the SS we got in that deal. pulled this from the espn message board:

Quote :
"I just looked at some stats on the two minor leaguers.. Looks like Pastornicky can steal some bases (24 sb 7 cs) and get on base at a decent clip (just under .350). And dont have a clue on the Collins pithcer aside from stats. He is a lefty reliever with a huge strikeout rate (73 ks in 43 innings of work) "

"The Braves have traded shortstop Yunel Escobar and minor-league pitcher Jo-Jo Reyes to the Toronto Blue Jays in a five-player deal that nets shortstop Alex Gonzalez.

The Braves began a conference call at 12:30 p.m. to discuss the deal and we’ll provide updates as they occur.

Gonzalez, 33, is in the midst of one of his finest offensive seasons.

The Braves also got left-handed minor-league pitcher Tim Collins and minor-league shortstop Tyler Pastornicky.

Gonzalez entered the All-Star break with a .259 batting average, 17 home runs, 25 doubles and 50 RBIs. Gonzalez currently ranks tied for fifth in the American League with 43 extra-base hits.

“This trade improves our club for the second half of the season,” Executive Vice President and General Manager Frank Wren said. “We have been looking at ways to strengthen our club offensively and Alex Gonzalez is a proven veteran player who gives us added power. He is a winner and a solid offensive presence in the lineup as well as a quality defensive shortstop.”

Gonzalez began his career with Florida in 1998 and was a National League All-Star in 1999. He was part of the Marlins’ World Series Championship team in 2003. In addition to the Blue Jays, he has also played for Boston (2006 and 2009) and Cincinnati (2007-2009). He missed the entire 2008 season due to a compression fracture in his left knee.

In 1,314 career games over his 12-year major league career, Gonzalez has collected 1,172 hits with 131 home runs and 571 RBIs. He is signed through the 2010 season, with a Club option for 2011.

Collins, 20, has appeared in 35 games for Double-A New Hampshire this season, with a 2.51 ERA, a .174 opponents’ batting average and 73 strikeouts with just 16 walks in 43.0 innings pitched.

Pastornicky, 20, has batted .258 with six home runs, 35 RBIs at 24 stolen bases in 77 games for Class-A Dunedin this season. He was the Blue Jays’ fifth-round selection in the 2008 Draft.

Escobar, 27, batted .238 with no home runs and 19 RBIs in 75 games for the Braves this season. Reyes, 25, appeared in one game for the Braves in 2010 and owns a 5-15 career record with a 6.40 ERA in 41 games (37 starts).
"

I am kind of meh on this trade. Everyone on the Blue Jays is putting up strong offensize numbers. Vernon Wells, Jose Bautista, John Buck, all of these guys sucked last year. I doubt Gonzalez will keep it up as a Brave. Escobar has been terrible this season, but I still don't like giving up on him. I hope this won't hurt the team chemistry too. I know Escobar is a douche, but this Braves team has had a good rapport and I'd hate to see that messed up by getting rid of one of the everyday starters.

Also gg to McCann last night.

^ But he did that against the Orioles so it doesn't really count.

Braves have a tough series against the Padres to start this week. Need to keep that 4-5 game cushion on the Mess.

He'll probably appeal and get it down to 2 or 3 games, but yeah either way it is a little excessive. In defense of MLB though it did look bad that Venters sailed one over Fielder's head, got warned, and then hit him in the back.

What is really shitty is that Dave Riske got warned the next day and two pitches later beaned Glaus and did not get thrown out the of game or suspended.

I guess MLB and the umpires feel bad for the Brewers. With the talent in that lineup they should be right there with the Reds and Cardinals if not for Hoffman and the horrible starting pitching.
