^ Yes, Oklahoma and State are also major players for Boyd. Mizzou could be a factor as well.

We've offered safety prospect Brandan Bishop out of Boca Raton, FL. Boca Raton HS has a pretty rich tradition. He's supposed to be a character kid with a 3.5 GPA. In one YouTube vid his head coach says he is the kind of kid that will be the first one in the weight room and the last to leave. Scout has yet to rate him, but Rivals has him as a 2* prospect. ESPN has him as the #119 safety nationally.

Safety
Boca Raton (FL) Boca Raton
Ht: 6-foot-1
Wt: 205 lbs
40: 4.54 secs

ESPN Evaluation
Quote :
"Brandon Bishop is a very reliable defensive back. He has good size and is quicker than fast. He is an active and instinctive safety that reacts instantly to the run or pass. Displays a quick break on the football and takes good angles to make the interception or knock down the pass. Demonstrates the talents to be an outstanding centerfielder in three deep zone defense. Possesses soft hands but needs to learn how to high point the football; often times waits for it to come down. Takes proper run support angles to the football and maintains leverage on the ball carrier while making physical tackles. Makes solid chest up tackles in the openfield and rarely gets out of position. Shows versatility on special teams as a punt and field goal blocker. Bishop is a smart and solid defensive back that shows ability and field smarts."

Having watched two of his highlight vids on YouTube I pretty much agree with ESPN. He'll go for the ball when he can, but can also lay the wood. He is a pretty good tackler. He does tend to let the ball come down rather than getting it at the high point, but that can be corrected by Mike Reed, our defensive backs coach.

what's his shuttle time? reaction speed is more important for a safety unlike a corner who needs to have a fast 40.

I'd say 4.54 is plenty fast enough for a safety.

according to espn analysis about him posted above. so his shuttle time and reaction time should be pretty good if he runs a 4.54 forty and is still quicker than fast

maybe we were able to sell him on being able to play with glennon and some good running backs; i hope so anyway, he would be a really nice addition to our building of a real football team

I said this on PP, but what would be great if we got Boyd is that we'd have 3 WRs that all bring something different to the table.

We have a decent shot at Boyd, and in all likelihood Denzelle Good will be upgraded to a 4* at some point. Beyond those two, though, probably not.

We've offered OT prospect Duran Christophe out of Woodstock HS in Woodstock, GA. Body wise he kind of reminds me of Xavier Nixon in that he's more muscle than fat.

Rivals - *** - #79 OT nationally - #67 prospect in Georgia
Scout - *** - #84 OT nationally
ESPN - #95 OT nationally

ESPN Evaluation
Quote :
"Christophe has a huge upside as an offensive lineman. He has good physical dimensions but could use some lower body strength work. Very athletic feet; can get to level two linebackers with ease. Feet move on contact but needs to play lower. Comes out of his stance a little late at times along with being too high. Gives great effort and is not afraid to fight the defender. Uses hands better in pass protection than run blocking; needs to strike a harder initial punch when base blocking along with locking the hands into the opponents frame. Sometimes makes first contact with his chest instead of his hands. Quick enough to get backside position in order to cutoff defender form getting to playside but doesn't always succeed; tends to try and cut too much backside instead of shooting a good cutoff block. Pass protection varies depending upon which stance he is in. From the three point, he doesn't kick back enough to get depth off the ball resulting in the defender getting into his body too soon. Does a much better job from a two point of getting back and anchored down; uses his hands well in stopping the initial charge of the pass rusher. Needs to keep a good base when mirroring the rusher; sometimes feet come together resulting in a loss of balance. Christophe is a very good athlete that will be a very solid player at the next level with more fundamental work."

list from BrassMonkey (well, it's from scout's prospect list, but he just posted it right there)

Xavier Nixon - UF or LSU probably. We still have a small shot, but he seems to have the big name schools in his eyes.
Marcus Hall - already out of it.
Jheranie Boyd - Solid shot.
Justin Brown - Not likely.
Jamil Merrell - Not gonna happen.
Hawatha Bell - UNC most likely.
Travis Bond - UNC most likely. It's possible, though.
Jonathan Meeks - UNC most likely. It's possible, though.
Terry Shankle - UNC most likely. It's possible, though.

all of the last 4 guys are "rumored silent verbals" to UNC already.

Next verbal could be:
Hans Rice (visit to Miss this weekend, decision after that)
Boogie McCray (solid lead for us, it'll happen eventually)
Jay Boyd (Thursday announcement)

How is UNC in so good with those guys. I just don't get what they are offering that's so much better than the other schools recruiting them. And if this turns into a damn "Public Ivy" discussion like that other thread my head is going to explode.

i think those guys are pretty solid to Tennessee. the thing about a school with the prestige as UT, guys commit to the school moreso than the Coach. smaller programs get guys because of coaching staff and girls... big schools get guys cause of prestige and girls.

but maybe? i remember mitchell-thornton liked us a pretty good bit before settling on UT.

Brass,

Most of the kids are NC products, and I'd guess that most of them grew up heel fans. I've always said that Carolina football, because of their basketball program, basically recruits itself.

Of course, it doesn't hurt to have Butch Davis telling them exactly what they want to hear.

It also doesn't hurt when they see UNC and their record compared to NC State and our record.

They want to play on the winning team, and we're not exactly winning right now.

I'll believe Boyd to UNC when it happens, but if it does, fine. UNC will find soon enough that it doesn't matter how many awesome WRs you have when that offensive line is neglected in recruiting.

^ Amen to that. By my count UNC will have 12 O-linemen coming back next year (I think they lose at least 3) and they're only adding one so far in this recruiting class. I'm pretty sure last year was similar for them as they only took one offensive lineman in that class. This won't hurt them next year and probably not the year after, but in 3 years, they'll be facing the same problems that we're having now in that they won't have any quality depth on their offensive-line. Add to that that, unlike Obrien, Butch's specialty isn't offensive lineman, and I see them having some serious problems doing anything on offense in 3 years. The only case I can see where this wouldn't happen is if they pick up Nixon (because he'll be ready to start after a year in the program) and another O-linemen in this year's class, and add a couple more hot-shot O-linemen in next year's class.

We learned from Chuck that having quality skill players doesn't amount to a whole lot without a good offensive line. Hopefully Butch won't learn from our mistakes.

Was posted by one of the admins on IC. Who knows with Boyd though. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Also, UNC isn't neglecting the OL. We have offers out to 7 uncommitted tackles and 3 interior linemen. We're in good shape for a few of them but none have pulled the trigger yet. I think we'll end up with at least 2 more to go with our current verbal David Collins.
