Ok Tank is rated the #22 DE by Scout and the #14 weakside DE as well as the #19 best prospect in Ohio by Rivals. I think tOSU may hold off offering b/c they already have two DE commitments one being from Melvin Fellows the #2 DE nationally. Having now watched his film all the way through I can say that the guy appears to have long arms which really help him out. He has a frame that could add a good bit more weight. He has quick feet which help him blow by o-linemen. He over pursued a few times, but recovered well b/c again he is quick. He played in both 3-4 and 4-3 formations at DE, and also lined up at TE for his high school team. I think he'd be a good pickup should we become a player with him and be able to land him.

Julius Forte, the 6-foot-2, 235-pound three-star defensive end from Boca Ciega High School in Gulfport, Fla., has 13 scholarship offers and is now starting to narrow down his list.

"It's really hard to say who is my favorite," Forte explained. "I'm still not sure yet, but I've been thinking about my visits and there probably are like six schools that I'm thinking about visiting."

Those six are North Carolina State, Louisville, Tulane, Indiana, North Carolina and Kentucky.

Local favorite South Florida is only 30 minutes from Forte's house and he likely will not visit the Bulls officially. "They had a great season last year," he said. "And I think they'll show people they are for real this year. They have really good coaches and the team is still getting better."

He attended a South Florida camp earlier this summer.

"I really want to take as many official visits as I can," Forte said. "I want to get a taste for the atmosphere and find a place where I feel comfortable.

"I want to make sure I have a good relationship with the coaches," he said. "I want our relationship to be friendly, but about business. Overall, I'd like to be in a family environment."

Forte says he watched many of the opening games and was especially surprised by one. "I was really surprised that North Carolina State lost to South Carolina," he said. "Hopefully they can go back and watch some film and learn from their mistakes. That's what I'll be looking for. There's still time and they can get better as the season goes along.

"I still think that NC State is up-and-coming," he admitted. "They have a pretty young team and I like how they always have good defensive ends there."

Another school that Forte says is known for producing good defensive ends is the Wolfpack's in-state rival, North Carolina. "They are improving too," he said. "I think the new coaches will be great and help get the football program up."

Forte seems to have a thing for rivals as he admitted he'd like to visit both Louisville and in-state rival Kentucky.

"I really like Louisville," he said. "They've been doing well the past few years and I think the defense there is pretty good. They just offered me about a month ago and it seems like a great program.

"I really like (running back) coach Tony Alford and he says that they'd be able to develop me into a great defensive end," he said. "He said they really like my speed and passion for the game."

Previously, Forte mentioned Ohio State as a school he was hoping would offer, but now he admits the Buckeyes aren't recruiting him anymore. "They've had a lot of commitments this summer," he said.

But another Midwest school has offered and is recruiting him heavily. "Indiana is recruiting me a lot," Forte said. "I get a lot of mail from them.

"I've never been there but they recruited my teammate Orhian Johnson (2008 Ohio State signee) last year," he said. "Orhian actually visited them and had a lot of good things to say about them. He said it was a great campus and really liked it, so I decided to check them out too."

Forte, ranked as the No. 50 defensive end in the country by Scout.com, also has offers from Iowa, Troy, Cincinnati, Purdue, Hofstra and Florida International.

Boca Ciega High School opens their season on Friday, Sept. 5.

He says he wants to major in physical training and reports a 3.5 core GPA and an 18 ACT.

Pack pursuing Sims

N.C. State is in the running for one of South Carolina’s most versatile athletes, 6-foot, 215-pound safety-running back-quarterback David Sims.

Sims, who plays for Calhoun County High, has the Wolfpack listed among his top three schools along with Kansas and Kentucky.

Most schools, including N.C. State, are recruiting Sims as a running back. He worked as a dual-threat quarterback for Calhoun County last year, passing for 1,500 yards, running for 900 and scoring 30 touchdowns.

Florida DE Luke Sager has been offered by State. Rivals rates Sager as a 3* prospect and the #50 weakside DE nationally. Scout rates him as a 2* prospect and the #128 DE nationally. He has a total of 15 scholarship offers.

N.C. State may appear to be trailing in the recruiting wars when it comes to numbers.

But don’t let the early returns fool you. Despite trailing the other in-state programs with nine oral commitments entering September — Duke has 22, Wake Forest 16, North Carolina 13 and East Carolina 12 — the Wolfpack should have the scholarships available to sign close to a 25-man class next February.

Even though there are only 14 scholarship seniors among the 101 players listed on the 2008 roster on the school’s athletic website, N.C. State does have between six to eight other scholarships available to extend.

Although an exact total of scholarship players couldn’t be confirmed by the school’s sports information department, our unofficial count found 24 walk-on players on the roster. That leaves 77 scholarship athletes, which is eight below the limit of 85 allowed by the NCAA.

Add those eight to the class of departing seniors and N.C. State could have as many as 22 scholarships available for this class. And more could become available through attrition.

Although the Wolfpack signed an impressive class of offensive linemen last February, the pursuit of blocking prospects hasn’t slowed.

N.C. State is making serious runs at in-state tackles Xavier Nixon from Fayetteville’s Jack Britt High School and 6-foot-7, 330-pound Travis Bond from Bertie High.

The Wolfpack is also heavily involved with 6-6, 290-pound offensive guard Kyle Koehne from Cathedral High in Indianapolis, Ind. Koehne lists State among his top five schools along with Boston College, Florida, Louisville and Michigan.

Defensively, end Clinton Simpkins from Fredericksburg, Va., is expected to schedule an official visit with the Wolfpack. He’s also stated his intent to visit East Carolina, Kentucky and West Virginia.

A major in-state target for N.C. State is 6-5, 230-pound defensive end Sylvester Crawford, who attends Northside Christian Academy in Charlotte.

Crawford, who made an incredible 18 sacks as a junior, currently favors the Wolfpack along with West Virginia.

Brandywine, Md., defensive tackle Raynard Rudolph, a 6-3, 300-pounder, likes N.C. State along with Maryland, Penn State, Tennessee and West Virginia.

It looks like the Wolfpack will be battling rival North Carolina for cornerback Terry Shankle from South Stanly High in Norwood. Shankle is also weighing offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida and others, but calls N.C. State and UNC his favorites.

I wonder if he could play fullback. I don't understand why football has gotten so far removed from using the fullback as a viable offensive option. They for the most part right now are just used as a lead blocker for the half back if they are even used at all. It's pretty tough to bring down a guy built like a truck, and while they aren't usually as fast as their lighter half back counterparts, they are still fast enough to get a nice burst through a hole. They are especially good in goal line and other short yardage situations.

Hopefully Colby Jackson can do that for us. I think the FB is still a good option in a traditionally run offense like ours. I remember how Madison Hedgecock ran over our defense that one game against unc. We could definitely use an Owen Schmitt clone.

We've offered Cincinnati TE Anthony Talbert. He is has yet to be evaluated by Rivals, but Scout has him as a 2* prospect and the #98 TE nationally. He also plays DE for his high school team.

I'm not too worried about a TE's speed like I am a WR or a RB. Good route running, good hands, and good blocking technique would be the first thing I look for.

7 DEs - Duane Chisolm (probably ends up at Clemson or South Carolina), Izaan Cross (don't really have an idea on him), Julius Forte (I think we are in good shape with him), Clinton Simpkins (he'll visit State sometime this season), Brian Jordan (I have no idea), Luke Sager (probably USF bound), Sylvester Crawford (WVU is no longer his leader, which is good news for us; good prospect that had 18 sacks last year )

1 MLB - Hawatha Bell (probably goes to South Carolina or VT)

2 SLBs - Jerrod Askew (I think he liked us early on but the fact that he needed to take extra foreign language courses to meet UNC system requirements may have pushed us out of it a little), and Luke Kuechly (Stanford and BC are very possible destinations; Cincy and Michigan State are big players; he may want to go to college with his teammate Pat Muldoon)

2 WLBs - Jamil Merrell (will go a school that offers both him and his brother, which won't be us), and Hans Rice (we could push past UCF when he comes to visit)

3 CBs - Terry Shankle (it's us or the Holes), Josh Hunter (sad that we aren't a favorite since his father went here and all; top four of South Carolina, Florida, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia), Rashard Smith (I think we land him)

It looks like a pretty solid class so far. Let's hope we can build on it by winning a few games in recruiting areas (or at least not getting embarrassed by, say, 37-0).

Edit: I wish there was a better video of Washington. The ESPN one just makes him look like an average high school running back. He just takes the ball to the outside every time.

So Robert Crisp already has offers from State, Clemson, Duke, East Carolina, Miami, Michigan, Maryland Nebraska, and South Carolina. This dude will be able to pretty much hand pick wherever he wants to go. Good thing he grew up a State fan and I think his family has season tickets. It seems like he will be the #1 player in the state next year.

LB Kendall Moore now has offers from State, UNC, and Wake Forest.

Here's a preliminary listing of 2010 prospects that we are after. It seems odd that Tony Creecy isn't listed on there even though we've offered.

Bible and Co. are already hitting Virginia with QB Greg Petrohovich from Richmond.

We must have a pipeline set up in Jersey, b/c 2009 recruit Tyson Chandler (who has us as his leader) is from North Plainfield and there is a running back, by the name of James Williams, from Plainfield. They are two separate towns in separate counties, but are right beside each other.

There is a RB named Ladarius Norris, who goes to T L Hanna High, the same school that 2009 WR commit Quintin Payton goes to.

Out of the three running backs listed pay close attention to Kevin Parks this year. He's been averaging over 200 yards per game. He may end up being the best running back in the state for the 2010 class and don't worry about his height right now. He will be growing. Besides Darren Sproles did just fine at Kansas State, and is doing well with the Chargers. That 40 time probably isn't too accurate since a lot of kids aren't shown the proper technique to running the 40 until they are upperclassmen or someone says something to them about it. He was supposed to be visiting State during the W&M game.

I guess my overarching point was that it's amazing how close we've come and struck out on serious talent in the past.

Kind of makes you appreciate the occasional DT or Philip Rivers.
