Top player out of Ohio and 9th PG out of his class, and we need a backup PG.

Yes.

We needed PG backup duties from a solid contribtor. Kid is a 4 Star which is very impressive as a backup.

He should see good minutes...a little small/light but can throw on some weight and really compete next year after DSJ is gone.

Plus he can only get better by going up against DSJ in practice.

Big pickup from a depth perspective. Gott seeing that depth helps.

yeah and this is the 3-4 year player you need for program continuity. Only Carolina can bribe 5 star recruits to stay forever.

Are we really to the point of ignoring 4* players at positions of need?

This is the same situation as Lorenzo Brown. He was a 4*, had to prep, came in and ended up being a really good player for us. The difference here is that ideally he'll be able to practice behind Dennis Smith Jr and gain some experience coming off the bench to make him more prepared for '17 when he'll be expected to play more. And if he has to go to a prep school, the staff liked him enough to still want him, so he'd be just like the Lorenzo Brown situation.

This is a great pick-up, esp. if he's able to play in 2016. We can keep Dorn and Henderson from having to try and play PG(they probably could fill in, but not natural PGs).

If he plays this year maybe Rowan won't play as much! (Because dorn and henderson wouldnt have to play backup pg, thus freeing them to play more on the wings)

I can dream, can't I?

lol. we signed an athletic 4* combo guard who can both play the point & score and he probably won't even start this year (barring the typical State scenario where DSJ tears his other ACL, Dorn runs over someone on a scooter, Henderson flunks out, etc.). if nothing else, that's pretty big for this program to land a dude as highly regarded as Johnson who knows he's probably not gonna get a ton of minutes off the bat.

feel like it's been a real long time since we've been able to enter a season with 10 eligible scholarship players who could be in our rotation (which is assuming Lennard redshirts but Yurtseven qualifies) and all of them seem like they can contribute. I mean, Kirk may still need some polishing and Hicks might be in a similar situation as Kirk last year, but still.

Not as bad as Scott Wood did...and he'll give us more on offense.

^No way. Players never improve after their freshmen year, especially white ones. Rowan will never get better (even though he played pretty well after being thrown into a role that he wasn't expected to play).

i was only comparing their freshman years. wood actually didn't get any better defensively. but his freshman year was better than rowans.

Rowan's PT will be interesting this year. I expect he'll definitely see some time at the 3, but could see him playing the stretch-4 some this year as well, read where he gained a couple of inches and bulked up a bit.

2-deep assuming everyone is eligible:

PG: DSJ, Johnson
SG: Henderson, Dorn
SF: Rowan, Henderson/Kirk
PF: Abu, Hicks/Kirk
C: Yurtseven, Anya

Freeman would redshirt and Kirk might see the court at the 3 or 4 depending on how he develops this offseason.

If we somehow add Kapita, I think Hicks would RS along with Freeman.

is Kapita supposed to be that much more college ready than Hicks? not trying to be a smart, just haven't read anything on that one way or another

Yeah Kapita should have been in the 2015 class but didn't make the test scores needed so he did a year in a prep school. So he should be a year older than Hicks and a little more physically prepared to play college ball.

Hicks - 6'7", 210lbs, 3* PF
Kapita - 6'8", 240lbs, 4* PF

I think Hicks could contribute(think Freeman as a Freshman), but if we land both it wouldn't surprise me if Hicks ended up just taking a redshirt year.

Where did you see that? If he can add some strength, he could be a really deadly scorer from a stretch 4 position. No traditional PF is going to want to chase him around screens all over the court.

He's already got a pretty big frame and looks like he could easily add some weight. Just a matter of doing so.

Seen it reported on various sites that he's gained an inch or two since the season ended and put on about 15lbs of "good" weight.

So he could be looking at 6'8" 230lbs already, so certainly could play some stretch-4 if he puts on a few more pounds of "good" weight.
