don't think we have to worry about him with regard to UNC, especially when sanctions get handed down.

I'm more worried about him going back up north but the longer he's here, the more friends he makes and comfort grows, etc.

sanctions will be handed down. it may not be the death penalty and it may not even affect men's basketball, but it hurts their recruiting efforts until that's made clear.

We really need a decent post-player. Bam would have been perfect, he really missed out on serious playing time.

if we don't get Rawle Alkins I don't see us doing much next season either. I'm not sure we can expect DSJr to carry the team the same way that Cat has. We have no legit 3pt threat right now and our bigs can't do anything offensively. Missing on Bam really hurt.

Agreed. And the fact that our last recruiting class was 2 players was a big miss. Even just 2 guys on the bench developing for down the road would be helpful. Instead we are in a position needing guys that can come in and contribute right away, and they simply aren't out there.

I feel like we never have more than 8 scholarship players on the roster, including the planning of the next incoming class. I get needing to keep scholarships open, but we seem to perpetually save 2-3 scholarships for players that never come and really just starting to land some 2-3 star guys(just 1 per year even) that will be 4 year players 10-12 minutes a game and develop. Perfect example is the fact that we don't have a backup PG. Can't tell me there wasn't a capable guy out there, maybe someone who developed a bit late and got passed up that would have been excited to come and play PG at an ACC school instead of staring at a lower end school. Freeman is a good example of that type of guy we should take one of each year, if they never develop no loss, and if they do you got a 4 year guy who will play hard, not complain about PT, and by the time they are a senior provide some leadership.

i don't think we'll be great next year either...but you do have to keep in mind that we'll also be adding Dorn and Henderson will be healthy for a full season. it'll depend on what the roster looks like...obviously we've had plenty of guys transfer, and i think we'll add somebody else to this class. but next year's team should definitely be better. how much better is gonna depend on how much impact DSJr, Dorn, and Henderson can have

we have 10 now (cat, freeman, anya, abu, martin, martin, rowan, dorn, henderson, kirk)

we have some players like that in the past (Raymond, Bartosz) who end up transfering or not being good enough to ever see the floor. The only 2-3 star players that will stay are the ones that are underranked and can actually compete.

The most important thing is to find players that fit into the type of system you want to play, or to adjust your system to the type of players you have. Fill in gaps with transfers and grad students. Gott is doing fine, the unexpected loss of Lacey as a backup pg, feature scorer, and senior leader has been a tough loss. Henderson going out 7 minutes into the season was also a pretty big loss.

freeman was a 3* IIRC who reclassified...so maybe his star ranking would've gone up had he stayed in his original class and had 1 more year of HS. his problem has been that he really hasn't improved a ton over his 3 years here. i think it's fair to fault the staff for lack of player development...

and if that's a concern with the staff - that they have trouble developing raw talent into refined, skilled players - then that's just more reason for them to go after 4-5* guys who need less "coaching up".

granted freeman is just one example, so that's hardly a fair estimation of the staff's example to develop players and there are examples to the contrary (vandenberg, richard howell come to mind immediately).

on the whole though...i agree with this

Does Henderson have another year of eligibility? That definitely helps - losing him for most of this season has really impacted us. Opposing teams don't really have to guard the perimeter and it just brings more people inside to cram the lane or get rebounds.

We still need a real back up PG - I have no faith in Cody Martin. Actually, the Martins in general have been pretty much a bust. They foul non-stop, are inconsistent at best shooting, and are both terrible passers.

I have no idea what Dorn will do - I did like seeing Kirk get some minutes. He wasn't perfect but having another body in there to provide some rest was nice. I think he could develop - definitely athletic.

Rowan has been pretty good for a kid that should still be in high school this year. I'm looking forward to seeing him do great things.

Anya is pretty much a bust. Abu has all of the tools to be great but just doesn't play with intensity consistently. I haven't given up on him. I actually prefer Freeman in over Anya.

And I totally agree that we'll get some transfers, Juco players, etc. to fill in the gaps.

I'm thinking the twins are going to turn out to be good 4-year players.

They have flashes (honestly, I can't tell them apart), they've had some really good games, they're tough and never give up, but are inconsistent and make some silly mistakes sometimes. Hopefully it's just that sophomore slump.

And I keep holding out hope for Anya too. He's never going to be a great basketball player, but I keep hoping that he'll eliminate silly mistakes and make the easy put-backs, and hold onto the ball when he rebounds.

^^yeah Henderson is a RS JR this year...so he would've had two years to play for us. but looks like this season is a lost cause, but he'll be a senior next year.

Cody Martin looked good last night, i thought. he seems to play within himself more than Caleb. Caleb seems much more prone to trying to do too much, jacking up 3s, etc. i wouldn't necessarily be confident with Cody running the point if Cat was hurt or fouled out...but he's capable enough to spell Cat for very short periods of time. i think Dorn and Henderson will provide some ball handling next year too...although neither are true PGs. Dorn, IIRC, is more of a wing and Henderson is a 2 guard.

Caleb looked great at the start of the season...but he has been ice cold from 3 lately and his game, all around, is still raw. they both play very hard and hustle and do some good things...but sometimes that is their own undoing as well, when Caleb tries to do too much or force things.

Anya is the most frustrating person on the team this year. He finally gets to a decent weight, but he's still the same player he was a freshman. His offense is almost entirely dunks/lay ups off of good passing or offensive rebounds. If he went at full effort whenever he was on the court that honestly might be enough for him to average 8 points or so - we've seen him in games like against UNC his freshman year or Duke last year where can use his size and length to his advantage against other, more talented post players.

Abu has the tools to be really good, but lacks touch on his shot and needs to gain consistency. I was hoping he'd take a bigger step this year, but he's still taken a jump from where he was at this point last season.

We desperately need to find a big man who can score the ball. I'd love to have a player like Howell or Tracy Smith on the team next season.

Anya is a fat shit that doesn't care. 2 1/2 years of this is proven. Hes halfway through his junior year. Hes not gonna miraculously become decent.

Remember Joseph Uchebo? I think he was actually committed here at one point.

He's transferred to Charlotte to play as a grad student. He's averaging a double-double, and over the last 3 games he's averaging 14 points, 19 rebounds (supposedly against the best teams CUSA).

Hey, if we lose on a BamBam type, thems the fucking brakes. Because I would take the slim chance of a win there over banking 2-3 star recruits all day. and go ahead and call that a false dichotomy, but Mox and Co. are looking every fucking time to shoot the fucking moon, you painfully ignorant fucktwats.

Only big fish on the line right now is Alkins, and he's going to be a signing day guy.

Staff is still evaluating other guys, but likely are going to be late-bloomers, guys who decommit, or post-grad transfers.

Not like we have a ton of PT to offer right now barring some attrition.

i, and others, have said it many times in this thread. but gott has consistently been able to land transfers, grad transfers, juco guys, and/or late bloomers. every year he's been here he's done that. so while we swung and missed on Bam, i think we're just in a position now where we may have to wait a little while to see how things play out with transfers, guys who reclassify, juco guys, etc.

in other words, i don't think it's panic time by any stretch. not to mention we have the #1 PG signed.

^^Exactly, barring unexpected attrition(Abu? Anya?), our team will be fairly deep next year with talent and experience. Hell our team might have a few more wins if we were just healthy this year, Freeman starting slow coming off offseason surgery and Henderson playing about 10 minutes all year.

well if you add in Dorn and Henderson with DSJr...assuming we only lose Cat (but who knows what the attrition will be) that's definitely a deeper team than this year.

also assume maybe kirk can actually play next year...

^really, given gott's track record of roster turnover that's not an unreasonable expectation. i think we all expect cat to go pro. and individually nobody else (other than kirk if he wants to go down a level in competition) has a reason to go pro or transfer...but odds probably are in favor of somebody else leaving. hopefully not

I mean, given how shallow our team is right now, yeah, I think we'll be deeper.

PG: DSJr, Dorn
SG/SF: Henderson, Rowan, Martin, Kirk
PF/C: Abu, Freeman, Anya, Martin

I'm not saying we're going to be super deep with great talent, but we'll have some talent and experience.

Obviously I'd love to add Alkins and maybe another big.

^I've seen conflicting news on that. I've seen where he's homesick and is considering going back, and then I've seen he's LOVING NC and his top 2 schools will likely be NCSU and UNC.

So....yeah, think I'd take any speculation on Alkins with a grain of salt at this point.

Only reason I could see him picking NCSU over UNC is to play with DSJr and to have a legit shot at seeing the court early. I don't know that he'll have a legit shot to start at UNC based on the roster they have.
