bad news on GDP and jobs and after two days of gains, the market is....flat. i know oil has been down but i just do not understand the basis of the buying interest this week, particularly in financials and retail. we are arguably in recession and will not break out of this credit crisis/housing slump at LEAST until 2009. expect another pullback in the coming week...

^^^^^ I guess it's a GREAT thing these stocks have been in my name for over 15 years then?

OH WAIT, I lost tons already from what I had, which wasn't much to begin with, seeing as this is all I have to support myself and pay for graduate school.

go back to chit chat

^^^it was a few weeks farther back than I thought but, 6 weeks ago:

"im sitting at about +5% in my 401k atm for the year."

im like 30% spread out among small cap growth and value, 40% spread out among large cap value, growth, and some other index, 20% in foreign stocks, 10% in company stock which has been beating the market consistently since Ive worked here.

I don't know a ton about option trading (only what a put and call is) but can someone explain these numbers?

Trying to figure out how $1.7 million equals 5.7 million options and $270 million in profit, etc.

So someone bought puts on 5.7M shares of Bear stock

Those puts cost of $1.7M at the time they were purchased.

At by the time Bear collapsed the same puts were worth $270M.

Basically the puts orginally went for 30 cents and then sold for $47

You can understand why I am confused. You're telling me the puts cost 30 cents, but this is at the link

Quote :
"It was pretty clear at the time that Bear was in deep trouble. And as we noted on the evening of March 10 (Rumor of the Day: Bear Goes Belly Up), paying $4 for a $60 put was expensive."

Wouldn't it be, if the puts cost $4, you get 425000 of them for 1.7 mil to exercise at ~$65. And the stock went effectively to zero?

Thats the only way I arrive at $270 mill with the numbers in the link

Accordingly to the article a $60 put cost $4

However, a $30 put cost $0.30

That's a steep drop but with a few days to expiry it is not unreasonable.

As a caveat, I am taking all this info from the article. I do not have any independent verification of options prices and so I don't know if there is a typo.

Now that I think about there must have been some typo or error because $30 put cannot go for $47.

Yeah, I can't figure it out either...granted, I don't know much about options, but I'm stumped.

Edit:

Ok, I got it now, you gotta follow the bloomberg link to get more info

Quote :
"The 57,000 puts that traded March 11 at the $30 strike price and the 1,649 that traded at $25 were collectively worth about $1.7 million, Bloomberg data show. Each put is equal to 100 shares of stock. "
