SEC bans naked short selling on 19 financials
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080716/bs_nm/sec_shortselling_dc_6

Interesting that Bank of America and Citi are on this list, but WaMu and Wachovia are not.

Seems as if fed.gov is not only installing price controls, but is directly determining who will survive and who will not?

^^^ That is just ridiculous. I don't see how they can implement something like that if it doesn't cover all equities or at the very least all equities within a given sector.

Talk about undermining the confidence in the market.

Forget inflation & liquidity fears. Legislative risk is probably the biggest factor out there now. How the hell can you feel confident taking positions when Washington lets it be known they intend to interfere with extreme measures.

Well one lesson I have learned in the last few weeks is anytime a stock is on the plus side for me I am getting a stop in at least at my break even price. Things are too volatile here lately to be trying to ride little dips, Id rather be safe and make sure I lock in at least a little profit on a dip in case it really dips then I can rebuy. Sure at some point its gonna dip to my stop, sell off, then probably hit a good run and Ill be angry, but beats trying to ride small dips which end up turning into large dips like they have as of late.

yeah I will gladly take a few more days like today, only thing that would be better is if gas/oil stocks werent all taking a hit it seems, but I only own one and it isnt down too much so I wont complain.

+1.75% for the day, does that mean I lose the game again? lol

what was your starting amount of cash or stock value, what did you buy or own that netted you a 25% increase?

I can't find one stock up 25%, maybe he meant 2.5%....Oil folks are just taking profits, it'll spike up again, I'm looking at RIG and NOV, anyone else hold either of these? Anyone else hold any of the ag stocks, POT-MON-MOS-AGU etc?

If you short any of the financials like freddie, fannie, lehman, etc I suppose you could have picked up 25% today

Fake money doesnt count, its a hell of a lot easier to get ballsy and put money into financials right now when its not your actual money haha

I am interested to see how today goes, lots of earnings today including AMD, IBM, Coke, JP Morgan, Google, Merrill Lynch, Microsoft, Nokia, BB&T, as well as a whole slew of other financials.

haha, so our stock split yesterday and all the sites are totally screwed up on our +/- % today. some places are showing us huge negative because of the split, others are showing that we are +43 pts when we are really only like +2.00 (from like 85 to 87). guess these sites dont handle splits well in calcs?

the second RY gets to 45 I'm selling half of what I've got there. I might cry if it decides to dip into the 30s again though.

Day's Range: 42.64 - 44.20
52wk Range: 39.62 - 59.29

i'd hold on to it. RBC is very strong while all the other banks continue to suck.

yea, but I have to liquidate some to pay bills/tuition/etc... I'm wishing I got out last november when it was right at 60 (just under). The only reason I'd leave half of what's there at the moment is because it's not one the worse off institutions at the moment.

With oil down a lot of stocks associated with it are taking a hit, may be a good time to buy in as lets face it oil is not limitless so the price is going to keep going up over time.

^ i hear you brotha.

..but with trying to game that, its the quick and the dead.

i've been coming and going on positions all over the place, but i'm not spreading the word because i don't want anyone following me into an ill-timed trade like DCR

i put more into CHK instead of HK

..this is the news they can move on:

http://oilshalegas.com/haynesvilleshale.html

HK seems to swing more, so it could be a no guts no glory type deal for me, but CHK has a lot of other stuff going for it

Yeh, I thought about putting some in CHK as well. These big swings from HK suck. I'm hoping CHK eventually buys them out though. That and/or hopefully CHK earnings will beat expectations and lead to a sector rise at which point I will decrease my position in HK.

Dont worry I was in DCR as well but not as much as you I dont believe

My old standby GTE is back to almost 6 a share, debating selling a few things to get back into it after I see what happens with oil pricing and how things are reacting to it.

Yep down $50 a share after hours already, ouch! Looks like several others missed as well and are down quite a bit. Expect tech stocks to cliffdive tomorrow with MSFT and GOOG down after hours.

Google: "Profit rose 35%!!!"
Market: "35%? Fuck that -- not enough!!"

If Citi is has a bad report before the bell tomorrow we could be looking a good capitulation. Several hundred points worth.

As a side note I think Wells upping the dividend was an unnecessary piece of bravado. Everyone knows they are in deep in mortgage and home equity. Their Tier One capital looks great right now but this crisis is far from over.

Today should be an interesting day with Citi not sucking so much and several companies sucking it up yesterday. No clue what will happen with financials, I would imagine tech is going to take a big hit though. Not lookin forward to opening as I know im taking a bit hit already with ESLR barely missing numbers but still taken over a dollar hit after hours .

Can we just have oil go to $150 next week so I can sell? Then it can go down all it wants.
