say your man asked you if instead of buying an engagement ring, he would donate the money to a charity/charities of your choice.

what would you say?

I would want the ring. I don't typically wear jewelry, but I'm quite fond of my ring and enjoy showing it off. However, I would consider a donation to a charity and a simple wedding instead of an extravagant one.

Wasted money either way. Kidding.

Probably the ring- it's more a symbol of fidelity than anything else. We can put money together later to give to charity if we feel like it, but a ring is is a formal step toward commitment for me personally.

Either way, I don't want a huge rock if I ever do get married. It's not necessary to be flamboyant.

I'd rather him save the money for our future than donate it.

I'm not all about a huge flashy ring, I just want something modest. I'm always frugal so it's not like I'd let my soon to be husband waste a bunch of money on my ring anyway.

Uhm...

Well, I guess, since you're just going to replace the ring with a wedding band eventually. Why doesn't he buy her the ring, then donate it to charity after they're married.

I'd rather instead of spending $texas on a ring, he put the money towards a kickass honeymoon or something more sensible.

Like a boat or a lakehouse.

haha, this cant be serious? or is it?

A diamond ring is an investment and unless you are just really out of touch with what makes a woman a woman, you better buy her a ring.

I could seriously see that as being something that would haunt you for the rest of your marriage, if she accepts after you pull some garbage like this. Basically, you will forever be digging your way out of the dog house

it's gonna depend on the chick obviously. my sister in law didn't get an engagement ring just b/c a diamond on her finger just wasn't her style and she didn't want one. she got a very very nice wedding band though (custom). she also said to my brother, "i don't want an engagement ring."

but seriously...if YOU were to bring up this idea, as said earlier, unless she's super-philanthropist, she's gonna laugh at you, get pissed off, cry, or all of the above. the engagement ring is a pretty big deal...doesn't have to be big of course (which is also dependent on the girl) but it's a pretty big deal.

And for the real reason: get the ring so she can show it off to all of her girlfriends and use it as a status symbol.

It's just the start of a life's worth of worthless fucking purchases whose sole function is to showoff to her friends. Windows, flooring, curtains, furniture, clothes, babies, etc.

i'd rather spend the money on something else.
like a classic mustang, a motorcycle, a boat, etc.. something we could both use.
or even a vacation or put it towards the wedding.

i'd only want something modest or an antique. i dont wear jewelry as it is and i'd be afraid i'd loose it anyways.

shrug.

not that i need to be worrying about this.. just yet.

as for the charity.. i'm already involved in so many and he helps by giving his time (and money too) towards what i'm involved in...
but it would be a pretty cool idea. if its something she is really passionate about and would be blown away by the gesture.

Because I obviously care about being "better" than my friends by tricking some guy into marrying me.

Male Answer: For an engagement the symbol or thing done should be of value to you personally. If you are very active in a charity and such and that makes you feel wonderful go with it. There is NOTHING selfish saying no, I would rather a ring. There's many reasons.

1) you can't show off to your mother and friends a donation certificate. Not as impactful.

2) guys won't know you are "taken"

3) the ring is more of a symbol and tradition of the pledge he has made to you.

... the donation he gets a tax write off for...

I'd definitely rather have the ring. Most women have dreamt of having a guy propose to her since she was a little girl. It's definitely about the symbol of the ring and it signifies a new stage in your life.

It's a nice gesture but the wrong time.

I am going to purchase the best baby ever so I can show it off to my friends!!!!

Oh and bring on the rock.

Oh and btw... when I do get engaged, when I get a ring- the guy gets a present as well. Something equally awesome.

I can just see a dude at a bar who pulled that. "DON'T HIT ON MY FIANCE ! It may interest you to know that we are en-gaged. I donated enough money to feed 1,000s of starving loser country children/warlords in lieu of a ring."

Though I also think most of the people in this thread are forgetting that it's traditional for the bride's family to pay for the wedding. So a ring is often a lesser trade.

i understand the good intention behind the idea but the ring is something you'll have for the rest of your life (hopefully). it's a tangible symbol of a commitment you've made. if both involved have a charity in mind that means that much to them, take the money you'd use for a wedding and donate that. it'd end up being more anyway and you could just get married down at city hall.

or to compromise even more, get a ball park of what your wedding would cost, cut it in half, and donate the difference. your day will be less lavish but somebody else's may be a little more.

i would want him to donate the money. I didn't even want a diamond. I got one and I like it, but I would have been happy to donate money instead. I think people care too much about stuff like engagement rings and how much they cost.
