^^

Statehockey is correct on the terminology. Everyone in finance should understand that "reduce you returns 1.4%" Means reduction of 1.4 percentage points not 1.4% of the return.

I have seen some non-financial news reports that mix this up and it always ticks me off.

So how sick would you feel if you had a $500 buy order in for a stock at .0015 the stock falls to .0017 then proceeds to move to .052 and climbing in 3 days. Yeah I feel pretty sick atm

make that .063 in less than 5 minutes

closed at .0725 so you do the math

no shit I dont think I have ever had such a sick feeling in my life as I do right now, I found my stock I had the order in and it just missed, after it started running I just figured it would run then die and it never stopped. As of close my 500 on thursday morning would be worth around 21,300 bucks right now and I would pickup house shopping again tomorrow.

I assume your talking about QMNM. I bought last week at .0068. Sold out at .013. Had at held into the close today I'd be up around $35,000 on a $3,500 investment. Coulda woulda shoulda, that's life, but you have to be careful with those penny stocks and take profits when you can.

yep QMNM I definitely would have taken some off the board and be riding free shares at this point no doubt so obviously that 21k number is a bit skewed.

I suppose it could have gone the other way:

"I had a buy order in for 0.0015, it hit it, then the next thing I know the company is backrupt and I'm out $500."

But yeah, I feel the pain. Been there, done that.

edit: What exactly made it go up? Think it'll happen again tomorrow?

only news I have seen on it is the following

Quest Minerals & Mining Corp. (OTCBB:QMNM) (Frankfurt:QMNB), a Kentucky based operator of energy and mineral related properties, announced today that it is diligently working to conclude their final stages of rehabilitation so that they can move into full production. The company is currently preparing to mine its Pond Creek location, held under its wholly owned subsidiary, Gwenco, Inc.

It has been in a downward trend from about .20 since June waiting on word of actual production so that is what sparked the interest and it has just run. I thought about buying in both friday morning and this morning still but after a mroe than 100% run each day I thought people would start selling hard, then it jumped yet another 425% today. For all I know it goes over .10 tomorrow but I am watching for a big pullback and then will reevaluate.

I took a small stake bet into NSMG today at .04 betting on a hurricane. This one rolls with the hurricane seasons and when katrina hit spiked to 3 bucks a share. Either way come hurricane season it should see a little runup maybe gets up to .15 and I turn a little profit.

ok....i'm just trying to help (though admittedly a little sarcastic at times)...i work on wall st and working on my CFA charter (took Level 2 this month). I'm trying to explain the long term consequences of your commissions eating into your returns and the effect that these reductions will have in the long term via compounding (a Finance 101 concept)...but clearly, as the last page demonstrates, I am piss poor at outlining this logic over teh interweb

good luck, hopefully we see an unbelievable bull market and you guys make so much money these commissions prove to be insignificant

You state the obvious problem but aren't really telling us what we can do about it.. not all of us can buy in higher amounts.

If we could we would.

Yes. Scottrade is looooooving the $70 in total commissions they have gotten off me thus. Oh no, how will I ever retire after paying such a high % in commissions.

there is nothing wrong with making trades in blocks of $1k or less.

shit, i still do it with as little as $400 sometimes. its usually when i'm monetizing a particular stock over several different intervals, but there's no shame in small trades as long as you're doing it profitably.

...so any chance we see short lived rallies during earnings season & any chance we see those rallies accentuated by short term pullback in crude? i think there's a fair chance we will see that.

speaking of a pullback in crude -- I think CLMT may be a good contrarian play against oil.
