from the leaked moto notes on 2/8:

Droid 2.1

Quote :
"Voice Recognition for Virtual Keyboard
Voice Recognition: You can now speak in plain English instead of typing, whenever a text-entry box appears on your Android device. Simply swipe your finger across the virtual keyboard and dictate your phrase.

Virtual Keyboard Enhancements: The fully integrated, enlarged virtual keyboard allows for easier and more accurate manual entries as well. Also included are auto-complete/correct.

3D Gallery
3D Gallery offers a whole new way to enjoy your phone’s multimedia features. With 3D gallery, all of your photos, videos, album art and images from your Picasa Web albums account online are displayed in three-dimensional stacks that gently move as the phone is tilted. Scrolling through and choosing media has never been easier. With 3D gallery simply use your finger to scroll through thumbnail versions of all your photos, videos and albums – and when you find one you want – simply tap the image to select it for viewing or playback. You can share pics individually or in bulk (by long-pressing a photo) on Facebook, Email, or MMS.

Pinch-to-Zoom
Enjoy pinch-to-zoom functionality for web browsing, plus the Gallery and Maps applications

News and Weather App and Widget
The News and Weather app pulls information from the web and brings it to your fingertips. Weekly and hourly weather forecast for your area based on your location and it pulls news headlines on the topics you care about most.

Google Maps Updates
Sync with desktop: synchronizes starred items between Google Maps on your Android device and maps.google.com.

Personalized suggestions: Google Maps on your Android device suggests (autocompletes) locations based on your personal search history on maps.google.com.

Night mode: automatically changes your screen at night for easier viewing and driving

Note: Sync feature requires user to be logged in to myGoogle account while on maps.google.com

Enhanced Music Application
New tabs at the top of your music player for easier access and navigation to your favorite artist, songs, albums and playlists.

Google Goggles App
Google Goggles App allows you to snap a picture to start a Google search. It can also ”read” photos of business cards and add them to your contacts. Even cooler is its built-in augmented reality feature that displays information about things, like stores and restaurants, around you.

Other Enhancements
Security: Prevents unauthorized pattern lock bypass
Yahoo email: Yahoo email new accounts setup optimizations
Battery life: ongoing battery life optimization"

yeah, the droid 2.1 update should have pinch-zoom in the browser, maps and gallery which wasn't in the regular android 2.0 or 2.0.1 release. The pinch-zoom in the browser on the Eris is from HTC and SenseUI

2.1 will be faster than whatever you have and it's definitely worth the upgrade.

^^ ha bet it won't be faster than what some of us are running. As for the eris, it's probably going to be a toss up. SenseUI is a memory hog. Can't wait till they finish the desire port to the droid.

wow, i just dled Mobile Stream (didnt try PDANet first) and I cannot notice it being any slower than my home wireless connection. i'm used to those verizon usb dongles and i dont think they were this responsive.

i'm at carmax right now and they dont offer any wi-fi

^^ SenseUI is the HTC overlay that runs on top of the android OS devices like the Eris and Hero. It's what gives you the 7 home screens, weather/clock widget, etc. The Eris has a fairly limited amount of memory as is so disabling Sense should help but if I had gotten the Eris it would've been for SenseUI.

Quote :
"To switch to the stock android home manually do:

1. Click Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications.
2. Scroll down until you find an application named "HTC Sense" and click on it.
3. Scroll down to where you can see "Launch by default" and click on "Clear defaults".
3. Then push the Home button (on your phone) and a dialog will pop up showing "Home" and "HTC Sense", check "Use by default for this action" and then click "Home". Now you got "Home" as default.

Just repeat the same process for "Home" to go back to the "HTC Sense" UI.

Alternatively you can use a program on the market place called "Home Switcher" to do this for you. "

Looks like Swype is in beta

"The Swype keyboard has been incredibly popular, despite not being openly (or legally, for that matter) available for download for Android. But Swype just opened up a beta program for our beloved platform. Here's what you need to know:

Go here to register for the beta program.
The beta test is open to a limited number of people. (So sign up now.)
English and Spanish for now.
This version is limited, compared to what you get when Swype is built in to a phone.
HVGA and WGVA resolutions only.
Support is done via forums.
And if you already have Swype (like on a new T-Mobile Android Phone), don't download this one. It work work.
There you go, folks. Give her a go"

Installed the BB 2.1 v0.4 rom last night and . Currently running it with the ChevyNo1 1.2GHz kernel and overclocked to 1GHz and things are buttery smooth and just plain fast. Haven't really played with it enough to find any heat or battery issues. The live wall papers run fine but are kind of meh.

you're kidding right? NexusOne didn't live up to what it was hyped to be. the Motorola Droid is still the best phone out there until the HTC Desire comes out on Verizon, THAT phone is what the NexusOne should have been.

^ with it's inferior ram and CPU? I think not.

The only thing that's remotely enticing about the Hero is the Sense UI and the flash 10.1 support. Videos have already surfaced of the Nexus One running the Hero firmware, so if it's anything that fantastic I'll definitely be getting on board as the 2 devices will be identical from a hardware standpoint.

Ha you obviously haven't seen the problems and poor reviews associated with the N1. Plus the snapdragon has been proven not to be all it was cracked up to be. The Droid can stand toe to toe with the N1 with no problems, not to mention the superior network.

And I suggest anyone who is rooted to go try Pete's 2.1 build over at alldroid.org. Just installed the Ere53 v0.6 update and wow.

Droid overclocked to 1.3 ghz is still slower than a Nexus One with Cyans rom. I have a g1 and n1 and the nexus is the best phone I have ever put in my hand, and I have played with the droid a lot.

The nexus on verizon will not dissappoint.

It's a good phone but by no means the "super phone" google made it out to be. I'd look into the desire when it hit verizon but I'm more than happy with the droid and like the convenience of having a physical keyboard. I don't really think things could get any smoother on the current rom I'm running and I'm only OC'd to 800Mhz on a 1.2GHz kernel. Either way, they're both good phones and it just comes down to personal preference.

Last I heard the HTC Desire was going to a GSM carrier, most likely AT&T

It'll be the most badass smartphone on the market, but Verizon is supposed to get a similar, slightly lesser, phone.

I tried putting android on a AT&T (well HTC, but that's what it's branded as) Tilt the other night, was either 1.5 or 1.6 and it was blazing fast for a 2-3 year old phone. If some of those developers could get that or 2.1 fully operational on it...

Bravo/Desire, whatever you want to call the phone coming to Verizon... it's the same exact phone as the NexusOne except multitouch, SenseUI, and on a better carrier.

A slew of new phones are coming out over the next month.

I'm trying to decide between the Bravo/Desire, Legend and the HD2. I would've gotten the Nexus One except for T-Mobile's stupid upgrade rules for that phone (I would've had to pay $530 because I'm still under contract). Kinda leaning towards the HD2 now because of the superior specs and the idea that it it'll probably get Winmo7 in some form (if not officially, then from XDA). But the Legend is getting some gushing reviews, and people seem to be really hyped about the Bravo or Desire or whatever it's gonna be called.

Any suggestions?
