NCSU / Enloe High School alum makes good

submitted by mdbncsu on Wednesday, November 29 2000 at 5:06 AM

Former NC State basketball guard Nate McMillan, was named as the head coach of the Seattle Supersonics on Monday after playing 12 seasons with the NBA team. He was hired after the firing of Paul Westphal and a lackluster 6-9 start by the club.

McMillan was also a high school standout at prestigious Enloe High School in Raleigh.

McMillan played two years, 1984-1986, for the late Jim Valvano at North Carolina State after beginning his college career at Chowan Community College in North Carolina. After spending his junior season as an apprentice to Spud Webb, McMillan took over the Wolfpack's starting point guard duties as a senior, averaging 9.4 points and 6.9 assists. The Seattle SuperSonics selected McMillan with the 30th overall pick in the 1986 NBA Draft.

McMillan becomes the NBA's youngest coach at the age of 36. He is the second former Wolfpack player to take the helm of an NBA team this season. Former NCSU guard Sidney Lowe was hired as the head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves this summer.

Irony:

Hiring of former NCSU player helps former UNC guard:

Quote:
"It looks like Paul Westphal's firing will help Shammond Williams, who has been buried at the end of the bench in recent weeks.
Last night under new coach Nate McMillan, Shammond played 18 minutes against Portland.
In the same game, the Blazers had 2 enjections, and neither one of them was Rasheed. Maybe he's making progress. "
