TWW News!

Good luck to them.

I'm wondering why the submersible doesn't stay tethered to the parent ship by a line that can be winched up if needed.

Another sub is probably holding the billionaire on board for ransom.

Well, they were going down to the Titanic. Are there spools big enough to hold a tether line that long? A hull breach at those depths would be instantaneous. I’m claustrophobic just thinking about this.

That article up there says that they had to be bolted in from the outside. So even if they float to the top, someone has to unscrew some port holes to let them out.
One would think they would have the foresight to keep a demolition hammer on board with a couple of 40V Dewalt batteries for an emergency escape.

If the hull collapsed i wonder what the bodies look like if they find the vessel and bring it back up

I'd be surprised if there was anything recognizable as a body in that case.

They never caught the iceberg. It's still out there.

The thing has been exposed to be made from off the shelf parts from here and there. It is steered by a literal video game controller. The ballasts are some commercial pipes.

They signed a waiver that says they agree that the vehicle is not certified by any body.

250,000 to poop and pee in Ziploc bags... yeah, I'mma pass even if I had that much to spare until tourist rides to the Titanic become somewhat 'common' using proper vessels, plus, yeah, insurance in case of death.

Even "proper vessels" to go to 12,000+ feet don't have bathrooms.

Yes, almost certainly.

This is really interesting:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Azorian

Deeper, and MUCH heavier weight. But also engineered to the max and very costly.

Maybe a line capable of winching the submersible wouldn't be necessary, but a marine-coated physical connecting wire / cable (could be pretty small) for constant communication and also the ability to locate by following seems like it would have been a good idea as opposed to having no idea where the thing is. I also realize there aren't many vessels capable of just going down for a rescue mission. This company seems probably done regardless of final outcome.

^^^ I want to know the properties of those 4.8 km of pipe. According to an underwater robot expert I watched yesterday, ocean currents would heavily affect a 12,000 foot long cable.

Was the submersible planning to actually go inside the wreckage of the Titanic? If so, maybe that is why they didn't bother with a tether as it would have gotten tangled up on stuff.

But honestly, based upon what I've read, the owner was cutting corners with costs and safety everywhere. A tether strong enough would be very expensive and he'd likely not have wanted to pay for it.

^^They had a lot of extra weight on the end.

This is a great documentary:

I have it on DVD. Crazy engineering.

But wait, somebody just posted the whole documentary on YouTube. This quite literally was not there last night (because I checked). Get it before they potentially take it down:

Definitely worth a watch for engineering nerds.

^^Dang it. I didn't test that video. It's just a long video telling you to click a redirect link to a sketchy third party site. Sorry.

Here's at least the trailer to the real documentary film:

Sounds like they’ve pretty much called it.

I can only hope that this will put stricter requirements on what passes for a tourism vessel. Sounds like this company had no business operating the way it did in the first place. I’m amazed that this sub has made as many trips as it had.

But like one of the CNN articles said, there have been much worse sea disasters that received less coverage.

When a handful of sight-seeing rich people is troubled in a submarine, an extensive search and rescue operation is mobilized.
When dozens of migrants fleeing life or death conditions is troubled in a boat, the world makes up excuses on why they deserve to drown.

why would they have not had a way to be trackable?

I guess because they went too deep?

why no GPS approximate location?

(I haven't looked too deeply into this, so sorry if this is a dumb/obvious question)
