"DJ Burns on returning to NC State: 'Who wouldn't want to come back?'
ByBRYAN PYRTLE 24 hours ago
4 Comments
RALEIGH, N.C. -- DJ Burns announced his return to NC State for the upcoming 2023-24 season on Thursday along with some new partnerships with the Pack of Wolves NIL Collective and Adidas. Burns spoke to the media about his new clothing line, returning to NC State and preparing for the 2023-24 season.

Read the complete transcript of Burns' availability below.

Opening statement

"I'd like to start by saying thank you guys, Pack nation and everyone around supporting has been everything. It's made the experience so fun that I am wanting to come back and do another year, having that possibility. I can't say that going into the beginning of the year and when I first came here that that was the plan, but it's been such a great experience. It's something that I'm blessed to be able to do again. Looking forward to and very thankful for all these opportunities to be a part of NC State as a whole."

On how NIL has impacted his career

"It's been everything. Having the opportunity to be able to capitalize on what we go so hard for. Trying to make it not only to the next level, but bringing it to the fans. Now that they're able to interact in a way that's very different and not what we're used to. Being on both sides of it, I think it's a great thing for college athletes to have this now and be able to experience it. It's awesome. I haven't seen, at least from my end, anything negative about it other than some people may not work as hard when they start to focus on trying to make money. That's not a problem for me, so I can't say that in my experience, but it's been great. It's been awesome."

On his sense of NC State's 2023-24 roster

"We got a lot of great pieces coming in. We still got all the guys who were here this year with us and helping us make our runs. We got guys like Ben [Middlebrooks], DJ [Horne] and Jayden [Taylor], some dogs coming in. I feel like it's going to be a continuation of picking up where we started last year. I don't think there will be too much of a drop-off, if any at all. It might even go forward from the way it's looking right now. We have some more people we want to go after, but as far as where we're at right now it's already looking nice. Very promising."

On when he finalized his decision, letting coaches know

"It was a couple of weeks ago. I don't remember the exact date, probably about three, maybe four weeks ago. Everything that went into it was who would be my teammates. There were a few good things between the team that we talked about. After viewing everything and thinking about how this year has gone and how I have the opportunity to not only extend myself from a basketball perspective, but also getting the degree that I'm working towards while being here as well. It felt like the right move. With NIL being a part of it now, there's not really a rush to try to go and do pro right away. That is the ultimate goal, but I want to make sure I'm ready 100% when we step onto that field."

On how much say he had in NIL merch design

"Honestly, they allow me to do a lot of it, pretty much most of it. I gave them the ideas and they were very great about getting back to me fast. They shot me all of the ideas. They sent me several different options and allowed me to choose from that. That was everything. I laid out the blueprint and they made it happen, and it went really well. It went better than I thought it would, honestly."

On more merch coming in summer

"We're working on that right now. We've been bringing out all the spots in this. This has been an amazing experience. I want to make it the best that I possibly can for the fans. You guys support us and do way more than we could ask for."

On motivation behind starting a clothing line

"It's something that I've always wanted to do. But I've always wanted to do more simple things. Stuff that younger people would wear, my age, and stuff that would appeal to older crowd as well. We really wanted to make this something comfortable and something cool. Something that people will be wanting to wear not just when they're going into a basketball game, but something you can wear every day. Something that represents our brand as well. We found the perfect way to make those two things mix. It was awesome."

On working with Adidas

"It's been phenomenal. The way they handle things, they make it so easy for you to get the job done. They're very easy to work with. They cater to you. I didn't have to do anything out of the ordinary in order to work with them. It was a smooth experience. I definitely want to work with them moving forward."

On worries that NIL would make players too individualistic, bonding with teammates through NIL

"I haven't had that experience at all. Working with my teammates, we do things on our own together. Wth Ern[est Ross] and T[erquavion Smith], we did the Vi's Pizza thing where we had the meet and greet. We did one at The Brickhouse, that was an awesome event. That was involving our whole team. It's little things that we can do. We're working on a deal with Yoke, the gaming company. We just started a team club there. It's very inclusive if you know what you're doing and you move about things the right way. It's something for everyone. I haven't had that experience at all."

On how much NIL impacted decision to return

"I wouldn't say that it had much of an impact. I can't say he had zero impact, it had some. But honestly, I love the atmosphere that I'm in. It's a place where I can grow and get everything that I need to do done. I can work on my degree and I love my teammates. Those are my guys, they have become my guys over the past year. Getting to know those guys even more and expanding as a family, it's been everything that you could ask for. Who wouldn't want to come back?"

On whether he's started his offseason preparation

"We've been working real hard at it. I've got with coach [Tom] Murph[y] and miss Jesse [McGinley], our nutritionist. We've been working at it hard. There's a lot of changes that have been made. Over time you'll start to see it more. Now that I've made the announcement, we'll be posting more on the Pack page and you'll get to see the transformation as it's happening. It's awesome. It's gonna be something I think the Pack fans will enjoy for sure."

On the value Pack of Wolves brings to college experience

"They've made it awesome. One of the biggest things for me is that they've set it up in a way that it's allowed me to grow my platform. Being able to bring more awareness to the things that we have going on. The things that they brought for as far as setting up things for us and making it engaging with students and engagement with the community, they've really put us in a light. It's been awesome. The experiences that we've gotten here are some stuff that I never thought I would have experienced in college. Pack of Wolves are the people who got that started for me this year. Without them, I don't think I would have been able to open that door as big as we did."

On if he's ever been embraced by fans like at NC State

"I felt something similar when I was at Winthrop, but I can't say that it was anything like this. Watching it from my first game where there were only a couple thousand people to the last stretch of our games, it was all sold out. Watching them grow, they grew with me as I did as I was getting used to being here. They've embraced us. It's been a crazy experience. I don't go too much of anywhere without seeing someone that's a Pack fan. That's the great thing about being in Raleigh. It's always love out here."

On his goals for upcoming year

"I'm going to get my buddy in tip=top shape and be ready to crush anything in front of me. That's first and foremost. Getting this degree this upcoming year, that's going to be very important for me as well. From there, it's continuing to set up the platform for after college. That's why we go to college: to prepare ourselves for life. I'm still taking that all in as a part of the experience. I've gotten a little more time here with basketball being a part of it to help with that. It's going to be awesome. I can't wait."

On specifics in getting his body in shape

"I played at 275 this year. I want to mostly focus on toning that up. Getting down a couple pounds and really being in tip-top shape. Getting back to dunking on people and doing things like that. That's what you should expect this upcoming season. That's what we're on.""

Was in his feelings last night "liking" some negative tweets. I know bc he liked one of mine that didn't even mention his name, just said he has been "not great" this year.

bruh... i just went to his "likes" feed. People are fuckin ass. I don't see how anyone can not like Burns. There was a time when being shitty to players here on TWW could wind up with them seeing it, but now only a handful middle aged men see anything here anymore so it's a safe space to bitch and moan.

you don’t have to tweet everything

and if you feel the need to, keep it to the paid people who are in charge

until college players are actually on salary/fully compensated without any bullshit, of course

Shaquille O'Neal. LeBron James. DJ Burns. Some players are so physically dominant, the refs don't call fouls the same as they do when other players get fouled. I was happy he didn't get T'd up for simply telling refs that he was being fouled.

That he is big so he doesn't get the same calls, which is bullshit. Also I'm glad NC State shit didn't occur when he frowned at the refs for not calling said fouls. Also, that he's as good as Shaq and LeBron.

Yeah he is officiated differently than most bigs. He definitely gets away with some offensive fouls. But he also should probably shoot 15 FTs/game

Yes it is laughable when people say that UNC gets its huge FT margins by getting the ball inside, and yet our offense runs through Burns much of the time and he averages just over 2 free throws a game. Refs allow way more contact to guys defending him. For the record, Bacot is average more than twice as many free throw attempts per game, and thats down significantly from his free throw rate last season!
