The Mets now have the best 50-year opening day record of any 50-year span of any major sports organization.

Jacob deGrom 6 innings, 0 ER, 1.0 WHIP. deGrom and Scherzer combined for 22 strikeouts.

The trade with Seattle paying off big dividends, as Robinson Cano owned the only two RBIs by either team on the day and made two fantastic defensive plays, and Edwin Diaz shut them down 1-2-3 for his first Mets' save.

Pete Alonso got his first major league hit, many more expected to come.

Alonso killing it so far. Hit a 3 run HR in the bottom of the 9th to help finish off the comeback win.

Just unbelievably filthy stuff from DeGrom.

I’m not sure anyone can hit what he had working tonight.

This bullpen is troublesome. Diaz is the only reliable reliver at this moment. But every other piece of this team is working well so far.

Well if you are short on time, just go to a Mets away game,
since its a Mets away game, there wont be a bottom of the 9th, and you can leave a little early

I’d love to. Spring is a hard time for me to travel with work, but maybe I’ll find some time over the summer. Wife has family in Ohio and we visited them and saw an Indians game last year. First MLB game in several years...really made me wish we had one around here

I saw a spring training game while visiting family in Florida. I will be in NYC last two weeks of June and will try to catch at least one then.

I usually go see the Mets when they visit for the Dodgers series but I'm moving before they'll be here this year.

Edit: just checked the schedule, Mets will be on the road the entire time I'm in NY.

This is an above average team being held back by a historically bad bullpen.

The Mets Bullpen is pretty bad, not Nationals bad but still near bottom bad.

Most blown saves in the majors, worst save % in the majors.

Just have an average bullpen and save % and there’s a much different outlook on this season

9 games back with 83 left to go. I'm not saying it's a good place to be sitting but it's not like this thing is unsalvageable.

I am pretty sure this dumpster fire is near unsalvageable.

The manager and Jason Vargas are getting into it with a beat writer. The GM is telling manager to take players out of the game, while not even at stadium

yeah...this season just became way more interesting with the way this team has been playing over the last 2 weeks.

jeff mcneill is the fastest Met to 200 hits now.

any thoughts on the stroman trade?

21 games left with the Braves, Nats and Phillies, plus 3 against the Dodgers. The Mets are red hot right now can they keep it up only time will tell. Outside of the 2 game set against Twins every series since the break has been against Sub .500 teams.

^At least Lugo found his groove. And the starters all seem to be going deeper into games now (low pitch counts will do that).

If you look at Stroman as if he was a direct replacement for Vargas, then it's a huge upgrade. But when you give up prospects you don't really know the value of the trade for at least a few years (this is one I particularly enjoy looking back on, also involving the Mets and BlueJays: https://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2018/4/30/17282828/dickey-syndergaard-darnaud-mets-blue-jays-trade-retrospective)

But overall I like that they went out and got him. Takes great leadership to show that kind of support for the team when the record wasn't matching the talent. They should have gotten some bullpen help along the way, though.

Shame that Cano is hurt when he was just now heating up.

Will be amazing if the Phillies can hang on. I'm more worried about the Cardinals and Brewers, though I suppose they can still (hopefully) beat up on each other. If one comes out and dominates the other (9 games left head-to-head).

Mets will have to play .600 ball the rest of the way just to match the worst record to ever get a wild card berth in the extended era (that they set themselves in 2016).

The Cardinals are the only team to worry about outside of the NL East teams.

The Brewers are Yelich and Hader and nothing else, their pitching is god awful.

I think the East gets 3 playoff teams this year.

I had so many debates with other Mets fans during the offseason when I insisted they needed to keep Jeff McNeil on the roster (and not trade him away). I pointed out his .381 OBP and .471 slugging and they said it was too small a sample size, despite him getting over 200 ABs.

He's now at .406 OBP, .522 slugging so far in 2019.

He doesn't have leadoff speed though, I wish they would move Rosario up. Sure he doesn't get on base nearly as often (.318) but he'd be practically a sure thing to score every time with McNeil, Alonso, Conforto behind him in a row. Instead they're batting Rosario, with McNeil's slower speed increases the chances of the double play.

Back down to 3. 15 left to play.

2 vs LAD (.644)
3 @ COL (.426)
3 @ CIN (.466)
4 vs MIA (.347)
3 vs ATL (.617)

Cubs remaining schedule:
2 vs PIT (.439)
3 vs CIN (.466)
4 vs STL (.565)
3 @ PIT (.439)
3 @ STL (.565)

Cubs have a much more favorable schedule, and we should assume ATL and STL won't have anything to play for those final series so neither will see the top pitchers.

Barring a complete Cubs collapse, I think the Mets will need to win 12 of those 15.

Future is still looking promising. Will be interesting to see if they hold on to Wheeler.

(As a White Sox fan, I'd love to see him on the Southside paired with Giolito)

Add a reliable closer and this is a playoff team.

Diaz 7 blown saves, 7 losses
Lugo 5 blown saves, 4 losses
Gsellman 4 blown saves, 3 losses
Familia 4 blown saves, 2 losses
Bashlor 3 blown saves, 3 losses

Diaz averaged 1 HR given up every 4 innings pitched. Compare that to Chapman across town who gave up 1 HR every 18 2/3 innings pitched.

After the 2nd half turn around I thought they'd give him another shot. It's not his fault his bullpen options were shit. Put the Yankees' bullpen in Queens and that's a championship team.

The shortened season schedule is not kind to the eastern teams.

Nats - 10
Phillies - 10
Braves - 10
Marlins - 10
Yankees - 6
BoSox - 4
Orioles - 4
Jays - 3
Rays - 3

Jays, Orioles, and Marlins are the only ones who had a losing record last year.
