Guess we'll be seeing these stupid green and yellow bikes clutter up Raleigh now.

Yea sorry I know i'm late to the party here, but I just happened to be driving by the campus the other day and noticed them parked at one of the bus stops. I didn't know they made it to Raleigh.

I have a FB friend in the Dallas TX area, and he's always posting pictures of these things parked all over the place. He makes them look like they are a huge nuisance there.

in Dallas the bikeshare programs are a huge nuisance. Because people dont know how to be generally courteous human beings with bikes apparently. (from someone who commutes largely by bike here).

I like the concept, but like anything else, people ruin it.

There was initially a rash of pranks with people seeing the most absurd places to put the bikes... on roofs and in ponds and stuff

I just wish people wouldn't leave these things wherever they please (e.g. the middle of sidewalks, tossed in flower beds, etc...).

just downloaded the app for fun. you can tell the app that the last person left it illegally parked, so maybe they have a way to discourage shitty users from being shitty users?

What does the pricing look like?

I mean it isn't like you can't get an inexpensive bike without all of the noise.

^If they could find a way to build those things like tanks maybe it comes through as pure profit after the upfront but between the tubing and the weather these things are probably gonna need a ton of maintenance.

You can get some cheap bikes for like $100-$150 apiece, and I'm sure they're getting a bigger bulk discount. Then it's just the cost of their little locking device, so it's gonna pay for itself relatively quickly.

The rate for NCSU students - at least during this roll out period - is 50¢ per half hour.

so during a 12 hour period, that's 6 dollars.

Assuming 100% usage per 12 hour period, that's 180/month, so they definitely could make their money back after a month, at the introductory rate.

I just wonder how many bikes they have to write off for a loss.

If these bikes average more than a few hours per week, I'd be amazed. I've seen plenty of folks riding them around campus, but there are a ton of bikes. They do seem to be robustly built.

I wouldn't mind bikeshare companies as much if they were fined or had their bikes confiscated whenever they were left in the wrong place. There should be some semblance of responsibility here. Instead, the shift just gets left everywhere, even in traffic

Many of the bikeshare programs use docks, and are not the issue. The issue some have is with the dockless programs.

this makes it easy for the city/state to just rent them, place them wherever, and confiscate them at will. it's the predatory towing of scooters.

"Not the thread for it, but it does include the gig economy - these municipalities are also not responding to these damned scooter companies fast enough. People are going to start getting hurt on these things if something isn't done. I've seen pedestrians on sidewalks almost hit, I've seen idiots ride down the wrong way on a one way road, and I've nearly hit one blasting across the street out of nowhere.

I find it ludicrous that bikes can't ride on a sidewalk but these stupid scooters can."

Users agree to not ride them on sidewalks when they sign up for the service.

Yep. We call this "law enforcement". If someone is driving their car erratically and parking it in places that are a nuisance, write them a ticket. I think the solution here is for the LimeBike people to get good at passing tickets on to troublesome users.

I like the idea of share bikes, but I hate the people who leave them wherever. In the middle of the sidewalk. In the bus stop shelter. In my yard. In my neighbor's driveway.

This isn't on campus (or even in North Carolina).

the scooters will all be gone by the end of the month. both companies said Raleigh wouldn't work with them, etc. but that's bullshit.

good riddance. working on campus I fucking hate those things. I like the idea, but it was so poorly executed and regulated.
