I live in johnston county. Used to go to church in Smithfield. There would occasionally be checkpoints in Smithfield (like 3 miles from the Catholic church) on Sunday mornings at 9am. This would’ve been around the same time as his racist comments to the N&O reporter. A racist sheriff that thinks his county is over run with illegals, setting up a license check point near a church with a high Hispanic population felt pretty fucked up and blatant to me. Haven’t heard of that kind of thing recently though.
