There's been talk of relocating the motor to the mid/rear of the car since the mid 60's. If it happens, the car needs a new name and be classed higher than the Corvette, IMO.

I honestly don't have a problem with the C8 going MR, however I'm sure Chevrolet would sell even more units if there were a FM C8 and a separate model that was MR.

If a mid engine Corvette is developed and sold, it will be alongside a more conventional Corvette. It will have a different name; leading rumor is something like Corvette Zora, or just Zora. Chevrolet isn't gonna just out of the blue discontinue a $55k sports car and introduce one that's $100k+.

They'll just have the Camaro replace the corvette's price point.

And yes that picture was just a test mule. But it looks better than that Lamborghini knock off spy photo

Quit trolling. They won't discontinue the Corvette Brand. It's their flagship. The Camaro, on the other hand, was discontinued for about 5 years at one point. Point being, the Camaro is not going to step up into Corvette-land and Chevy isn't going to get rid of Corvette heritage. The Corvette is a FMR setup as it is now. Maybe Chevy wants a super car to compete with the new Ford GT and are looking to expand their current portfolio. Adding a new lineup is expensive. Does Chevy have that much room to accommodate? I think making the next gen Corvette a dedicated MR will take some getting used to by the community. Traditionalists will despise it. But I like variety...

cts-v, camaro, and several trucks share a lot of the motor
cts-v and camaro share brakes, magnetic ride suspension, transmission, diff, wheels, and probably some other stuff

http://gearheads.org/7-mid-engine-corvette-prototypes-that-never-made-it-to-production/

there's been quite a few prototypes, as I stated, if it is done it will rebranded as Stingray i HOPE. To keep that series alive.

I love the corvette brand, I don't think they would have a car above it but at this point, why not go MR for a bit. Shaking it up is good for the Car's history.

They also had plenty of entry level $50k corvettes and enthusiast $70k corvettes.

Are they going to be able to offer a $50k corvette that's MR that meets or exceeds a C6/C7 capabilities that is comparably priced (when new)?

I drove a C7 Stingray 3LT Z51. I like that the cockpit is driver focused, though it is a bit more cramped. The color HUD is very nice. I don't really pay much notice to the HUD in my C6, but the C7 was definitely nicer. I don't know why this is... I don't know what it is about the C7 that didn't excite me like the C6 did when I first drove it. I thought my drive by wire throttle response was "laggy", the C7 I drove in sport mode was worse at times. The C7 seats are much more supportive for a track day, but I'd rather have my C6 seats for longer trips... I may have set the bar too high on the C7 since I drive a modified C6. Outside of all the new shiney technology, it just didn't really wow me. I'd like to see what the C8 brings to the table.

Oh and I didn't care for the 7 spd transmission. The gate change feel from 4 to 5 is really 4 to 7, so it's like they crammed gates 5 and 6 in the middle between absolute neutral and the right most dogleg 7th gear. No lockout, just straight from 4 to 7, and a very small mechanical resistance when you slide the shifter over as you try to find/select either 5 or 6. No 1 to 4 skipshift, which is nice... Electronic ebrake (not a fan). cool car. Just not for me. Lets see if theres more of that when the c8 comes out.

So here is the deal.

ME = mid-engined
FE = front-engined

ME C8 will debut at Detroit Auto Show in Jan and go on sale later in the year as a 2019 model.

FE C7 ZR1 will also debut around that time.

FE C7 and ME C8 will coexist till around 2021 when the C7 is phased out.

What happens after that is unknown, but I speculate a FE C8 will probably debut around that time to replace the FE C7. Yes, having two completely different Corvettes makes no sense, but neither does replacing the $55K car with a $100K+ car.

But some people are pointing to the latter scenario, saying the FE Corvette-duty will be left to the Camaro, and the ME Corvette will go after world-class ME supercars. I guess on second thought that makes more sense than having two Corvettes.

Weird, huh?

Latest very clear shots of the ME C8:

Well, that's mostly because I don't see the Corvette going to a ME form factor and keeping a "Corvette" name.

Give it another name, like Aircobra or something... Maybe that's just me being against evolving the car's initial design. There's heritage with the Corvette being a fiberglass bodied 2 seater, front v8 motor, and rear wheel drive sports car. Changing it to a mid engine totally redefines what a Corvette has been for the last 64 years.

I'm likely just hating on the whole concept, not because I own one, just on principle. There certainly are others that agree.

I do not want to see the end of a 2 seater platform the corvette is currently. I entertain the idea of an American company making a Mid-engine performance vehicle. I do not entertain the idea that a Camaro will fill the shoes of a Corvette. It's more than performance; it's the soul of a car. You may say that's corny, but:

A 2015 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and 2015 Audi R8 V10 Plus 4S both lapped Nurburgring in 7:32. That doesn't mean one of those cars is a good replacement for the other... They are both about as unique to one another as a Camaro would be to a Corvette (in both literal and traditional sense)...

^ agreed with all, including the point you made in your last paragraph, but a Corvette and Camaro are like a dozen time more similar to each other than Guilia vs. R8.

Yeah, they are closer to one another than the exaggerated Guilia vs. R8 comparison, however, the point remains that a Camaro is not equipped to be a Corvette.

ever since the top dog corvette was supercharged, the top dog camaro was faster. the ZL1 was a better car than the c6 ZR1, the Z/28 was better than the c7 z51, and now the ZL1 1LE is better than the latest c7 z06/grandsport.

Largely because the legacy corvette design doesn't allow for enough airflow up front to keep the motor and intercooler cool, has the camaro pulled ahead. all the C7 zr1 mules I've seen aim to fix that

I would bet money that when the midengine halo car comes out, it'll be called something different, like Zora and be DOHC

the camaro has/had better cooling than the corvette, allowing it to maintain power levels and manage heat considerably better. look at all the complaints about the Z06 (the price of the zr1 attracted a different audience that didn't so much care about track performance) losing upwards of 100hp after ~3 summer laps of a decent road course due to heat soak.

the corvette has generally come with shitty tires as well, coming with runflats while the top dog camaro comes with track day specials.

you can quote magazine hot lap figures, but if you look at ALMS and all the GT car racing, the GM rides are generally camaros

The fat-ass previous generation ZL1 was not superior to the C6 ZR1. Based on what I've seen owners state online the C6 ZR1 is considerably more track durable and less prone to overheating than the C7 Z06. One owner, in particular, talks about it all the time and his home track is COTA. He actually canceled his order for a Z06 after hearing how inadequate it is for track duty. Actually bought a Cayman GT4 instead.

You can't really compare the C6 ZR1 to the C7 Z06, even though they're both the contemporary top dogs. The ZR1 was engineered and built to a considerably higher price point, which is obvious when you dig into the details.

Mid-Engined Chevy Corvette C8.R Spied On The Track For First Time
https://www.motor1.com/news/261838/mid-engined-chevy-corvette-spied

Quote :
"The powertrain for the road-going C8 Corvette remains a mystery, which leaves the engine motivating the race car a conundrum, too. The existing C7.R packs a 5.5-liter V8. Rumors the street-legal version could be available with as many as three engines: a 460-horsepower (343-kilowatt) 6.2-liter V8, 650-hp (485-kW) 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8, and a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 with as much as 850 hp (634 kW)."

random thought (and statement) - it appears that many super/hyper car designs all kinda merge toward a common shape and layout. Almost like an iterative process where hypothetically in the future there will be (1) one optimum design.

^ Quite true for mid engined ones; they all seem to have more or less the same silhouette.

There is enough variation in front engined cars for them to have significantly different silhouettes.
