We're all most likely at that age where things have started popping and creaking.

Anyone had good experience via Chiro?

In my mind, Spine health is as important as mental and heart health.

Half my softball team goes to Spinecare in Cary. Dr. Creehan has all the equipment necessary to diagnosis your issue onsite, and he creates a plan to measure the improvement. My wife had chronic neck pain for years and they were able to solve the issue for her (she has been pain free for 5 years now).

My grandpa was a doctor and thought chiropractic medicine was bogus, but the guys on my team and my wife have gotten very positive results for treatment for their pain.

While I'm sure there are some good ones out there, I have come across so many chiro's that are absolute quacks. Anti-vaxxers and think everything can be fixed by cracking your back. That's enough to turn me off.

I did about 30 sessions with a guy trying to fix my back pain caused by a couple slipped discs. Waste of time and money IMO.

Too many quacks in that business. I'm sure some are fine, but If you have back issues go to a physical therapist not a chiropractor.

My wife has been going for a couple of months now and her weekly migraines and cluster headaches have completely gone away.

I just went to my first consult and had x-rays of my spine done to prep. Hopefully will help with my neck and back pain.

uh, no

I had migraines as a kid (horrible ones), and a chiro fixed them right up.

Had I gone to a chiro when I first started having back problems, I probably wouldn't not have had two surgeries that resulted in removing a lumbar disk and a fusion.

If you go to a chiropractor and they want to adjust you without evaluating you (posture, gait, range of motion, diagnostics tests), you picked a bad one.

Outten Chiro was the place where I went while at State. Good people.

One of my former neighbors was a Chiro and I went to her for about 3 months. All she would do was lay me down on the table, tell me I had some stuff going on, use that clicker thing on my feet and a little on my spine and send me away. I never got any better.

So then I went to a Raleigh Ortho and they did x-rays and didn't find anything so they recommended PT. I did that for a few months. Some days it felt better, some it was worse, but overall it was the same.

Went back to Raleigh Ortho, did an MRI and nerve test. Still nothing alarming. Sent me to a shoulder specialist (Same surgeon who operated on my shoulder 5 years ago).

Prior to seeing that shoulder doctor, we had a health fair at work and I got set up to do a screening at Proactive Health and Wellness. The guy there (Dr. Josh) said that I was in the right place and he could help me (Of course they would all say that) using the Graston technique. He said it sucks and is painful but it works.

The following day I went to the shoulder surgeon and he ordered another MRI for my shoulder but recommend going to a Chiropractor and the possibly using Graston technique. This made me feel better about going to this new Chiropractor.

So I've been to 3 visits so far and he is so much more involved than my neighbor was. He put together a long term plan for me and explained in detail everything he was doing. He says that I am going to have to relearn how to breathe (stomach not chest) and improve my posture. He has been way more hands on and performed manual adjustments on me that my neighbor never even attempted. He popped my neck and back in ways I didn't think possible. The Graston technique does suck but if it helps it is worth it. I'll update later on in the process to let you know how it is going.

tl;dr, Some conditions may need to be treated by a Chiropractor versus a Dr and Chiropractors vary in their treatment techniques so it really depends on which one you get. As mentioned there are a lot of quacks out there.

In case you are interested, Graston technique (Not my Dr btw): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRM3-9sja-g

This is a nice source on the basic ideas of chiropractic treatment and why they're quacky.

From the link above:

Quote :
"The rationale for chiropractic hinges on three postulates:

Bones are out of place
Bony displacements cause nerve interference
Manipulating the spine replaces the bones, removing the nerve interference and allowing Innate (a vitalistic life force) to restore health."

The few areas where there's demonstrable benefit from Chiro treatments overlaps with physiotherapy, which is based on science rather than woo woo.

I just read some of the things Paul Ingraham, assistant editor of that website wrote.

He doesn't think stretching helps anybody, doesn't believe in trigger points, MRIs are useless, and tried to discount lower back pain by using Andy Whitfield (of Spartacus) to say he thought he had back pain "from his intense gladitorial training. In fact, he had a tumour. It killed him in 2011."

Oh, and he's a reformed Registered Massage Therapist.

I'm not sure with whom he registered.

Glad i didnt look at that website, and thanks for doing the research on it.

So basically the people that are saying that they are kooks are the ones that have never been to a Chiro?

I've been to a chiro plenty. Strictly speaking about chiro work, they oversell the benefits by a lot. Can it help with some medical issues? Yes. It can reduce/eliminate some headaches, joint/muscle pain, stiffness, etc. Think of it as a supplement to muscular therapy (e.g. PT). It should not be treated as a replacement therapy for legitimate health issues. It's a great supplement. For minor issues, maybe chiro will solve them, maybe not. Or, if you just like getting your bones popped (which I do), it's wonderful. I mean, a neck adjustment just feels damn good.

As far as the claims to solve so many disease/ailments, which have no known legitimate connection to your skeleton - they're quacks. Many are anti-vaccine. Quack. Many don't believe in lots of western medicine. Quack.

So, it depends on what you're in it for to see how much of a duck a chiro is.

Some just want to give you a 5 minute look over/adjustment, put you on a heat or electroshock table, collect your money and send you on your way. Those, in my experience, tend not to oversell, but they also aren't necessarily tailoring a medical solution to you. Some will be more like a PT and develop a plan and spend time figuring things out and doing different adjustments. You'll feel that your money was better well spent. And again, in my experience, these types tend to oversell the benefits (not that there aren't any).

^Yeah, I agree with a lot of that. Mine does talk a lot about "increasing life energy" and crap like that but also agrees that chiropractic care is a great supplement to traditional medicine when you consider that both have their own strengths as well as some limitations.

The only chiropractor I know believes coconut and other oils can cure (almost?) all diseases. So I don't go to a chiropractor, even though I've had back issues.

To be sure, there are probably many who are nuts. I can really only speak to the ones that my wife and I visit. We've had good experiences and haven't found them to do anything which conflicts with any modern medicine treatments we may seek. If they don't like vaccines or whatever, so be it - as long as they make my back feel better.

If you have back troubles I'd suggest trying a different one and see if your experience is any better. If you have a primary care doctor you could try asking them for a referral. Chances are that way you aren't getting one who is anti-modern medicine.

I went to a chiropractor for years, and mostly agree with what wdprice3 said above.
