The doritos ultrasound was funny where I was watching because the woman who had just had a baby after 2 days of labor and finally a c-section sees it and yells "damnit, honey, you should have just gotten a bag of doritos!"

^^That one made my white privilege and white guilt really act up. I mean, some white dudes in a Prius sneaking through a police checkpoint? Imagine if it were 4 black dudes in a late 60s Impala. Dead.

Everybody seemed to like the ultrasound one. I thought it was disgusting and horrifying.

We should go back to the days when child labor was not shown on television.

^^^But they were dumb, white guys, which makes it okay.

Incidentally, if you ever find yourself using a whole roll of paper towels to clean up a small spill, you should definitely PM me. I'm a smart, savvy female who can condescendingly point you to the product that will solve all your idiot man problems.

I hate commercials in general.

I only watched one superbowl commercial because I was forced to on youtube, and I liked it quite a bit.

for dumb comedy: Willem Dafoe/Marilyn Monroe Snickers

for buildup and delivery: I really liked the Super Bowl Babies commercial. You don't realize what they're doing at first and then almost midway you figure it out. When they get to "1967 Packers babies" it's pretty funny.

more underrated one was Helen Mirren chastising drunk driving

Agree. Past few years have been duds. I don't know if the exorbitant cost to put in a spot removes the more risqué humor or what. Even some of them that go for shock factor like puppymonkeybaby or whatever, it's just more "what the hell" then "hey, this is a good commercial". What was that advertising, Amp?

Maybe Super Bowl commercials being appointment viewing is no longer true.

If it has shock value that doesn't relate to the product or service, its useless. Also, creativity is almost completely gone. Most of the commercials are animals talking which was funny when it was relatively new like 15 years ago but now its strange when a commercial doesn't have an animals behaving like a person. Who the hell is getting paid to make these ads? Awful.

They know that people are at parties talking to people and just hoping for something to break conversations and get people to look at the tv like "look!,wtf is that on the tv screen?" You can still be creative in doing that.

The prius and taco bell commercials seemed to be one of the only ones that actually advertised while leaving a memorable mark without the same ole recycled ideas.

I'll give it to heinz as well even though the "aww cute dogs" factor is cheap.

turns out the apartments.com commercial wasn't random and was just over the heads of people like me too young to understand the jeffersons. great ad in that case.

^ yup, Tide definitely had a good night.

Loved the OBJ/Eli lift.

Coinbase was dumb and a complete Andy Samberg rip-off.

The Alexa commercial featuring Jagged Edge, Cardi B (and her chirp), and Anthony Hopkins among others was pretty great.

The Crocodile Dundee appearance was funny as fuck.

Everyone at my party died during the Devito M&Ms commercial but it didn't do anything for me.

Avocados From Mexico was funny (and has the best jingle of all time)

"*Bleep* don't stink" was funny for making people uncomfortable. "That's better than being a lawyer"

from the same fucking speech they quoted

Quote :
"Now the presence of this instinct explains why we are so often taken by advertisers. You know, those gentlemen of massive verbal persuasion. And they have a way of saying things to you that kind of gets you into buying. In order to be a man of distinction, you must drink this whiskey. In order to make your neighbors envious, you must drive this type of car. In order to be lovely to love you must wear this kind of lipstick or this kind of perfume. And you know, before you know it, you’re just buying that stuff. That’s the way the advertisers do it…

It often causes us to live above our means. It’s nothing but the drum major instinct. Do you ever see people buy cars that they can’t even begin to buy in terms of their income? You’ve seen people riding around in Cadillacs and Chryslers who don’t earn enough to have a good T-Model Ford. But it feeds a repressed ego."

I was listening on NPR about that MLK commercial...

from what I remember, apparently the King Estate is very protective of his speeches, and it's very hard to hear the full speeches, but they're willing to sell clips for car commercials. Apparently there was another one a few years ago.

eh, i was wondering about that, i didn't look.

I went back and found the transcript of the segment I listened to:

https://www.npr.org/2018/02/05/583461849/super-bowl-ad-featuring-voice-of-martin-luther-king-jr-sparks-debate

Quote :
"CHANG: So there is something a bit ironic about using his voice to drive consumer spending. I'm curious. What is the criteria that the King estate uses to make decisions about how to use his voice?

GARROW: We don't really know what their criteria are or how much they got paid by Dodge. I would think it's in the millions of dollars, quite frankly. In contrast, authors and writers who nowadays want to use King's words in scholarly books are fearful of the estate coming after them. And that's really the most important thing to stress here, Ailsa - is not Dodge's buying the rights to the excerpts of this sermon but the fact that the estate's behavior again and again serves to diminish and restrict the extent to which people can use and hear King's own words.

CHANG: But if there are such severe restrictions on the use of his words, is hearing Dr. King through an ad still better than not hearing his words at all?

GARROW: I think it's crucial for people to hear King unedited, unselected, to hear at least a few minutes' worth of a sermon like that "Drum Major Instinct" one, not just a few seconds edited down as part of a pickup truck commercial."
