The problem is that it isn't a racist issue, it is a perception issue. For the most part, black people are the ones that commit crimes. Their gangs are the most notorious for their violence and their brash attitude/language comes off the wrong way. Me saying that won't come off the right way to most, but what is false about that statement? Compare country music to rap music...go ahead. One is about F'in hoes and makin money and the other is about family and God.

I don't know where the change needs to begin, as there are idiots of all races, colors, etc. Some of it seems to be an economical issue, however there are rich people that act like scum, so who knows. I just wish that the black race would take responsibility for their actions instead of pawning it off on racism and the white man holding them down. I'm a white man and I just want the thugs and gang members to stop robbing and killing(each other) and become productive members of society. Get an education, not a gun.

From the Atlantic article:

"or me assuming that Paisley must know something about barbecue because he's Southern. "

I don't understand what could possibly be offensive or incorrect about this statement.

I guess I'm not seeing where this attitude of "it's so hard to be a white man" that people are attributing to the song is. The closest I see is "it's hard to understand what black people face because I'm not one and can't experience it"

Certainly the song is dumb, but there are lots of dumb songs.

^thats exactly what hes sayin lol im not seeing the "its hard to be white" either

he said some line like "im proud of where i come from but not all the things weve done"

is that really such a controversial message?

i can imagine its hard to hear people calling you a bigot and a redneck racist because you have a particular viewpoint

i do believe white people have to walk on a particularly sharp precipice, while minorites get a lot more leash on what sort of feelings and even actions they can express

it is foolhardy to think otherwise.

i am just kinda glad i have the mentality where I can see past a statement and understand where people are coming from before for having some sort of internal or external response

If you have a bigoted or racist viewpoint, then it should be hard to hear people calling you that. That's the point.

I'm always cautious about being accidentally racist. I was at NC State walking across the street with this black dude named "Shy" (someone might know him) and we're about the cross the street when this car just blows by us. And Shy was like, "Dude, if I was white that car would've let us walk on across." So now I try to give the right of way to black pedestrians. /care

I think that for a lot of white male Southerners especially, being presumed to be racist can be an issue. Think of it like this...when we acknowledge the truth that there is still racism in this country, pick which group of people you would IMMEDIATELY associate with racism.

It's not an issue in the sense of ruining their lives, or oppressing them, but it can definitely cause more strained relationships across communities and cultures.

Like I said, I think this song is strange, but it does deal with an actual topic that we should discuss and work on.

Well, I will definitely say that whites are more ignorant than most minorites, and that's one of the biggest problems with the racial issues today. It is not necessarily talkin a certain way or wearing culturally identifiable clothing, but it is actions and treatment towards minorities that really push buttons. That is why the song is stupid. It completely ignores the fact that most white Americans live in their bubble and are very ignorant because of it.

Not sure if we're ignorant, or just tired of being reminded every month of some minorities plight. Perhaps if we stopped isolating minorities all the time with a "_____ history/appreciation month" or "you can't say that, they're a minority!" or playing the "race card" all the time, people would stop worrying about ethnicity. After all we're all just assholes, and should be treated accordingly.

when the guy says he's proud of being a southerner and that he's celebrating his heritage. what he's really saying is that he's proud of his WHITE heritage. if he were inclusive of all southerners, there's no way he'd see the confederate flag as a symbol of all southerners.

^^ Not a whit-guilt thing.

^ Listen, as long as some white dude sees a latino on the bus drunk and says "he is drunk because he is mexican" then there will always be racial issues IMO.

Same thing with " he's loud/mad/rude because he black."

Nothing to with culture. Southern culture is one of the last remaining bits of americana that suburbia has not destroyed yet.

I just want to know why this is such a big deal that "high brow" magazines are writing lengthy articles about it. People write songs far worse than this all the time.

Modern racist country songs are nowhere near as good as the old stuff. David Allen Coe's "Nigger Fucker", now there's a classic.

^^^i don't see what you did there. i don't know that anything you said was relevant.

also, you'd have to be blind to think that there's little culture left in this country. i guess if you call it "americana" then that narrows it down arbitrarily and subjectively. Hip-hop culture? Latino culture? Boating culture? Internet culture? Hacker culture? and on and on.

excluding cultures because they're newer or they're traditionally not as recognized doesn't mean that culture is somehow being destroyed by urbanization and suburbanization.

is there some homogenization because of television and the internet? sure. but there's also access to people and ideas from all over the world. this has allowed for cultures to spring up that aren't based entirely on geography and have much less wide appeal.
