"I just heard about Call the Midwife. Season 2 starts this Sunday on PBS so I figured I'd mention it here for the PBS viewers.

I haven't seen Season 1, but it was enthusiastically/aggressively recommended to me as meticulous, gritty, heartwarming, every positive adjective ever."

I just finished season 1 with my wife on netflix. I didn't think I would like it, but I did. I would recommend it.

I think I'll be waiting until January. I wish PBS would get it together though

Also, I'm going to have to un-like Downton Abbey on Facebook... I dont want any spoilers creeping in

THIS DOESN'T REALLY HAVE TO DO WITH DOWNTON ABBEY so no spoilers but

I've been thinking about reading one of Ken Follett's new books, Fall of Giants: Book One of the Century Trilogy. Since I have a long car drive coming up I thought listening to the audiobook would be fun. I looked it up and Dan Stevens is the narrator (the guy who played Matthew on Downton Abbey) so yay I now have 12 hrs of listening to Dan Stevens.

In case anyone is interested, here is the synopsis:
Ken Follett’s magnificent new historical epic begins, as five interrelated families move through the momentous dramas of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the struggle for women’s suffrage.

A thirteen-year-old Welsh boy enters a man’s world in the mining pits.…An American law student rejected in love finds a surprising new career in Woodrow Wilson’s White House.… A housekeeper for the aristocratic Fitzherberts takes a fateful step above her station, while Lady Maud Fitzherbert herself crosses deep into forbidden territory when she falls in love with a German spy.…And two orphaned Russian brothers embark on radically different paths when their plan to emigrate to America falls afoul of war, conscription, and revolution.

Fuck Julian Fellowes for killing off Matthew after the birth of his child, or at least a very brutal cliffhanger.

I have no idea because I don't really read news about it for spoilage reasons. My tepid anger has still not been assuaged. They could have written a better exit for him that didn't include a horrific and untimely death.

Meh. I guess they didn't have many options. At least he got to see his child.

^^ yeah, essentially

there was no way to have him off of the show (for good) without killing him

none of us would've accepted it if he had cheated on Mary or left her

this way it's a cleaner break without any messy storylines that leave him still wandering around

Yeah, after thinking about it more, it was probably the ideal scenario. It was just too much to take in at first. I'm emotionally invested in this show like I never have been in a show before.

For the Christmas episode/finale usually being pretty awesome, I felt like nothing happened. So now I feel like nothing happened this season.

What the hell? I had been binge watching it on video before this season and had no idea the seasons were so short. Well, at least there is Upstairs/Downstairs and Lark Rise to Candleford.

5 years later...

watched this series late last year. far too short. hoping the movie lives up to the standard.

on a related note, Victoria is a decent similar series. Any others?

Upstairs Downstairs is the obvious start, Grand Hotel if you are okay with subtitles, Mr. Selfridge if you like Jeremy Piven (i don't so I didn't like it but my wife did), A Place to Call Home, Poldark, The Durrels in Corfu, The Last Czars isn't as good as any of the others but if you are interested in the Russian Czars at all it's not bad
