Dog Rescue at 14,000 Feet

http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/most-popular/dog-rescue-at-14000-feet.html#.UC4wNUY4qE8.facebook

Quote :
"Strangers banded together to organize an impromptu rescue yesterday after a couple, climbing Mt. Bierstadt to Mt. Evans in Colorado, found an abandoned german shepherd along a ridge connecting the two 14,000-foot mountains.

Amanda and Scott Washburn gave the dog food and water. But, suffering with bloody paws, the animal refused to be coaxed into hiking the difficult class-three boulder-filled terrain.

Official search and rescue teams were not an option, as they do not respond to animal calls, so the couple posted the story Saturday along with photos on the local climbing website, 14ers.com. A concerned team of volunteers returned that night to make the 3-hour climb to the estimated spot but after two hours could not locate her.

Substantial efforts to put together a second rescue party failed on Sunday, but early Monday morning, eight dedicated hikers and climbers - including an experienced climber named Chris O’Riley enlisted by the Colorado group, Animal Help Now - made their way up Bierstadt equipped with a large backpack, food, water and medical supplies, in the hopes of bringing her down."

Quote :
"Their task turned critical when a August blizzard struck while the eight were still atop the ridge.
Finally the team, which included volunteers from local German Shepherd and Husky rescue groups, located Missy, surviving on her own since August 5, when she and her owner were injured and "in over their heads" as a storm hit.

Dave Crawford, from Animal Help Now, said if it weren't for the Washburns, who found her six days later, the dog would likely have died in the snow that fell yesterday. "It was really fortunate, because she was off-trail when the Washburns happened upon her. They really saved her life."

O’Riley called her a "sweet, gentle" dog and said she never wouldn't have gotten out of the boulder field on her own. They used a tarp to scoop her out of a crevice and carefully piled her into a backpack and hauled the 100-pound dog back down the mountain."

yay good news

updates:

the owner wants the dog back... the sheriff's office is currently deciding whether or not to pursue animal cruelty charges against the guy for bringing a dog along on a hike where dogs clearly do not belong.

and the couple that discovered the dog and initiated the rescue effort wants to adopt her.

Quote :
" Residents of Plaquemines Parish in Louisiana were shocked by Hurricane Isaac Wednesday morning when ocean water burst over the Mississippi River levee, covering their town and leaving thousands trapped in attics and on roofs.

Jesse Shaffer, 25, and his father, also named Jesse Shaffer, 53, both of Braithwaite, La., stayed behind in their town to rescue their friends.

While police and the fire department were unable to reach some stranded people using their vehicles, the Shaffers were able to save lives using boats.

"We rescued a lot of people, saw a lot of things you never thought you'd see," the older Shaffer told ABC News, beginning to cry.

Each Shaffer controlled a boat, in which the pair saved a combined 120 people in 12 hours, as well as animals.

Their rescue mission began at five a.m. Wednesday at a local auditorium, where they rescued 10 people including a baby and an elderly man, they said. The Shaffers had to break through the attic ventilation system to reach the victims.

"They'd call me and didn't know the water was coming up until it was late, and they'd call me to come get them," the older Shaffer said. "We had to scramble and try to find a boat 'cause none of the sheriff's department or anybody could come to this end of the parish."

The Shaffers rescued a family of five, including three children under the age of 6, from the roof of their trailer home just minutes before water overtopped it. The rescue was the older Shaffer's most memorable of the day.

"They were all on there, screaming their lungs out," he said.

The rapid rate at which water gushed over the 18-mile levee, into their town was "unexpected," the younger Shaffer said. As of this morning, their home had 12 feet of water in it and they had to stash their belongings in the attic, which was then flooded. Water rose six inches every four minutes, the older Shaffer said.

"There were a lot of houses we saw that were in spots that we know where they're supposed to be and they were maybe a half a mile down the road, floating down the highway," the older Shaffer said.

The Shaffers fought through debris, rough water, wind and downed power lines to save their stranded friends.

The older Shaffer insisted they are not heroes and they were never afraid.

"I guess we were just going on adrenaline," the younger Shaffer said. "

Stories like this restore my faith in humanity.

probably the saddest thing I've read in awhile

Quote :
"Baby struggles to survive after pregnant mom killed in crash

BURLINGTON, N.C. — Brian "Casey" Riggans and his wife, Megan Riggans, were looking forward to the birth of their first child when the unthinkable happened.

Megan, 22, went into labor Sunday night, so the couple got into their car and headed to the hospital from their home in Staley.

As they drove along Greensboro-Chapel Hill Road, their car hydroplaned on the rain-soaked roadway, veered off the pavement and struck a tree.

Megan was rushed to Alamance Regional Medical Center, where doctors delivered her baby boy. But Megan died before she could ever hold him in her arms.

Her husband suffered face and back injuries in the crash, and is scheduled for surgery Thursday.

"Bad things happen to people every day," said Randy Lewis, Megan's uncle. "And we just happened to be the one that it happened to."

Lewis, who never had children, said Megan was like a daughter to him. His dairy farm was her refuge – and her passion.

"From the time she was a baby, she's been running around here feeding calves, playing with cows," he said. "As she got older, she started showing cows."

Megan was a farm girl from head to toe, her uncle said. She was involved in 4-H and Future Farmers of America.

"She never wore shoes," Lewis said. "I've dug rocks out of her feet."

Now the farm feels different and quiet without Megan running around, doing chores.

Now, neighbors and friends are showing up, ready to work so that Lewis can have some time to go to the hospital.

"You never know what people think of you 'til something happens like this," Lewis said. "It's our tribute to the community and to Megan at how much people care."

He says the family is thankful that Casey is alive, and that little Will – named after Megan's late grandfather – is fighting to stay alive. The baby was a high-risk pregnancy before the accident.

"We could as easily been planning three funerals instead of one," Lewis said. "But the fact that this little boy even got cranked up and going in life, to me, is a miracle.""

this husband is going to feel like a total dickhead when he realizes what he has done

he was probably speeding and driving like a moron, and he gets his wife killed and perhaps his child?

its not even necessary to drive like that, i feel like id drive more slowly and carefully with my wife in labor next to me

im not trying to be insensitive but i never in my life understood why people feel like they can drive wrecklessly because someone is giving birth.

Wow. Just wow. Not trying to be insensitive, but you're assuming an awful lot about the situation. Where does it say he was "driving like a moron", as you so kindly put it?

Mother of 5 finds ex-boyfriend living in her attic

Quote :
"ROCK HILL, S.C. -- A Rock Hill woman says she found an old boyfriend living in the attic of her home after being released from jail recently.

A mother of five said her children are afraid to sleep in their own rooms after finding a man living in the attic of their home.
She asked Newschannel 36 not to identify her by name because her old boyfriend who was living in her attic is still on the loose, but said she heard a thump coming from the ceiling after she put her children to bed Saturday night.
"Then all the nails just popped out of the ceiling over my bed. Like 'bing, bing, bing,'" said the woman.
Thinking it was an animal, she asked her older sons and adult nephew to check out what was happening upstairs.
"They found a man. He had packed all the old coats and jackets into the heating unit and was sleeping in the heating unit," she said, adding that the man ran downstairs and out of the house before police could get there.
Officers did find several "Route 44" Sonic cups filled with feces and urine in the attic. The man also appeared to have rigged the ceiling vents so he could see into the woman's bedroom.
The only entrance to the attic is inside the home -- in the hall that connects her children's bedrooms.

Officers are trying to determine just how the suspect was able to get inside the house to go up in the attic each day.
The woman says she had broken off a relationship with the man years ago, though he had done some work on her home about a year ago.

He was convicted of stealing her truck earlier this year. He finished serving that sentence and was released from jail two weeks ago. "

"Newborn on life support declared legally brain dead

Snow Camp, N.C. — Family members of an infant who has been on life support since he was born said Wednesday they plan to donate his organs.

Will Riggans was legally declared brain dead Tuesday but was kept on life support so that doctors could harvest his organs.

He was 10 days old.

Will's parents were on their way to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill on Sept. 1 to give birth when they were in a wreck. His mother, Megan Riggans, died. His father, Casey Riggans, was seriously injured.

Doctors said Will was deprived in-utero of oxygen and suffered head trauma from the wreck. He never opened his eyes, cried or moved his arms and legs.

Family members said they are comforted that Will can live on in other babies who are fighting to survive."

Quote :
"Seagull Steals Camera, Gives Tourist Inadvertent Panoramic View of SF Bay

When a seagull flew away with Nathalie Rollandin’s camera, she probably feared all her precious holiday snaps of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge had been lost forever. Little did she expect that she’d not only get her camera back unharmed, she’d also be left with quite literally a bird’s eye view of the coastline.

But that’s precisely what happened after a seagull apparently confused the 26-year-old French tourist’s GoPro camera for a piece of food and snatched it, still filming.

The seagull soon soon grew bored of the camera (perhaps because it didn’t taste as good as it had hoped) and dropped it next to what CBS News has identified as the St. Francis Yacht Club – but not before capturing 30 seconds of soaring, albeit slightly shaky, views of the San Francisco Bay at sunset.

Having retrieved the camera in one piece, Rollandin discovered the creature’s surprising talent in film-making and has since shared the footage for the world to admire. Her video has so far garnered more than a million views on YouTube.

As Nathalie said on her YouTube page, “A San Francisco sunset I will hardly forget…”

Quote :
"Woman Who Ruined Fresco Of Jesus Now Wants To Be Paid

Cecilia Giménez, the Spanish woman who really messed up when she tried to restore a 19th-century fresco of Jesus, now wants a piece of the action from the 2,000 or so euros ($2,600) her church has collected from tourists coming to see the ruined artwork.

Spain's El Correo reports, according to Gawker's translation, that the 80+-year-old Giménez has hired lawyers to make her case. A court battle is expected. Ars Technica says the church has also lawyered up.

As Eyder wrote last month, by the time Giménez was done with her attempt at restoration, the image was being likened to a werewolf. But news reports in recent weeks also showed that her work has some fans — such as the online Beast-Jesus Restoration Society — and that it is drawing tourists to the Santuario de Misericordia church in Borja.

So now, it appears, we're at the stage of the story where the inevitable legal actions begin."

"Hong Kong Billionaire Offers $65 Million Bounty For Any Man Who Can Seduce His Lesbian Daughter

A worldwide search worthy of The X-Factor cameras has kicked off a hunt for very talented men who face a $65 million prize. But unless they have the XX Factor, their chances of claiming the top prize are slim to zilch.

Hong Kong real estate mogul Cecil Chao Sze-tsung has announced a $65 million bounty for any man that can woo his lesbian daughter out of her marriage to her partner.

Reports Business Insider:

Property magnate Cecil Chao Sze-tsung announced the HK$500 million reward this week after reports that his 33-year-old daughter Gigi Chao, a University of Manchester graduate, had married her long-term female partner in France.

"I don't mind whether he is rich or poor. The important thing is that he is generous and kind-hearted," Mr Chao told the South China Morning Post, describing reports about his daughter's marriage as "false".

The extravagant tycoon's offer blended Blind Date and The Apprentice with Mr Chao claiming he hoped to help the successful suitor kick-start a business.

"Gigi is a very good woman with both talents and looks. She is devoted to her parents, is generous and does volunteer work," he added.

According to the report however, Ms Chao married Sean Eav, her girlfriend of seven years, in France on April 4.

A photograph posted on Ms Chao's public Facebook page confirmed that she and her partner were Paris-bound in April this year.

Gigi and Sean, if you're open to an old school yet fabulous lesbian couple/gay couple household for a few years, we're willing to present ourselves to your a-hole father and split the $65 million 75/25 or something (we can work out the details later)!"

"(EW.com) -- The CW has renewed "America's Next Top Model" for its 20th cycle since debuting in 2003.

With the new cycle comes two big changes for the competition show: This time it will premiere in summer 2013 instead of the typical early fall or late winter start. And the show will feature male models for the first time.

The male models will live in the models' house along with the female models, and all will compete for the title of "America's Next Top Model." No word from the CW yet about exactly how this affects the competition and its rules.

"America's Next Top Model" is currently in the midst of its 19th cycle, "College Edition.""

Quote :
"UNC student helps deliver baby at Chapel Hill bus stop

Chapel Hill, N.C. — Emily Brewer and Elizabeth Aguilera Lopez can barely communicate because of a language barrier, but that didn't stop Brewer from delivering Lopez's baby Wednesday at a Chapel Hill bus stop.

A graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Brewer happened to be on Cameron Avenue with her 2-year-old son, Dylan, at about 12:30 p.m. when she saw a pregnant woman in distress at the bus shelter on the corner of Columbia Street. As she approached, she said, it appeared that the woman's water had broken and she was in labor.

Brewer called 911, but the baby wasn't going to wait for the paramedics.

"Oh my God, the baby's here," a frantic Brewer told the dispatcher. "She's had the baby. It's in her pants."

After having her check to see if the baby was breathing and appeared to be OK, the dispatcher told her to clean the baby's mouth and nose.

"I looked around, and we have nothing sterile, not even a tissue," Brewer said Thursday. "I used the mother’s scarf."

Following the dispatcher's directions, she had Lopez lie down on the bus-stop bench so she could rest the baby on her chest.

"He said, 'Now I need you to find a shoelace,'" Brewer said. "I look down and realize I’m wearing Mary Janes. The mother was wearing sandals, and her friend was wearing tennis shoes. So, while the friend is supporting the mother’s pants that are holding the baby, I’m untying shoes to tie up the umbilical cord."

Paramedics arrived minutes later to take Lopez and her 5-pound, 9-ounce newborn daughter to UNC Hospitals.

"It was not the place you’d want to give birth, but it turned out great," Brewer said. "The mother was a hero. She didn’t freak out. She stayed calm, cool and collected."

Brewer later had a tearful reunion with Lopez at the hospital. Even though she speaks little Spanish and Lopez doesn't speak English, she said they had no trouble working together during the delivery.

"We speak Mom, you know, there’s a connection," she said. "Once you’ve given birth to someone and you’ve brought life into this world, you have something in common with every mother on Earth, and at that moment, that’s all there was."

The baby is the second child for Lopez, 28. She said she had no contractions and only felt some pressure during the delivery.

Lopez named the baby Emily to recognize the woman she called her "angel."

"It’s so humbling. By some crazy twist of fate, I’m part of this woman’s birth story," Brewer said."

"CARY, N.C. --Cary's Galaxy Cinema screened its final film Sunday night after eight years in business. Employees say they were told the theater would be demolished to make way for a new Harris Teeter grocery store. The theater specialized in showing rare independent films and Bollywood movies.

"There are other theaters in the area that show quality movies, but not so many at one time and one place," Esma Margaret Sederoff said.

Loyal customers, like Sederoff, returned Sunday for one final showing.

"We got plenty of Harris Teeters around, but we have very few independent theaters to go to, so, sort of sad," Berney Golden said.

There's been talk of shutting it down for months, but employees only got an official notice Wednesday.

"I am going to be unemployed," Projection manager Matt Gronke said. "I'm going to file for unemployment. I'm going to be looking around for jobs, but in this economy, we'll see what happens."

It's Gronke's job to make sure the film starts rolling on time, or at least it was his job. Most theaters are ditching the old film and going digital. Galaxy was one of the last to do it the old-fashioned way, and it was the only place with so many offbeat films under one roof.

"I mean, you're going to have to go to Raleigh, you're going to have to go to Chapel Hill, Durham, The Chelsea, Carolina, places that are a 30-40 minute drive," Gronke said, "so it's going to stink for a lot of people.""

Quote :
"Discount supermarket Lidl branded 'tasteless' by angry parents for selling REINDEER steaks in run-up to Christmas

Rudolph definitely wouldn't approve -- a discount supermarket has outraged parents by selling reindeer steaks in the run-up to Christmas.

Lidl is selling frozen Siberian reindeer leg steaks under its deluxe luxury brand at £7.99 for 350g, promoting them as 'tasty steaks, exceptionally lean low-fat meal with a lovely natural flavour.'

But parents have accused the German-based supermarket, which has over 500 shops in the UK, of 'destroying the magic of Christmas' as it risks excitable children spotting the frozen steaks and thinking the reindeer won’t be bringing their gifts.

Father-of-one Andrew Stevens, 47, of Halifax, West Yorkshire, criticised the chain: 'If my little girl sees this she’ll be worried the reindeer won’t be able to bring her her presents this year because they’ve got no legs.

'It’s pretty tasteless timing. It risks a lot of upset if children were to see the reindeer steaks.

'It’s not the type of thing you want when your kids are getting excited for Christmas and singing ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer’.

'And to include it in their leaflets is thoughtless. Any child could pick that up.'

Mother-of-three Karen Bridge, 35, of Halifax, said: 'If they’re trying to make money out of reindeer steaks at this time of year they’re destroying the magic of Christmas for kids all over the country. It’s indefensible.'

A spokesman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said: 'The idea of "Rudolph" being slaughtered and cut up for dinner makes a mockery of the Christmas spirit of peace and good will to all.'

Siberian reindeer can live to the age of 15 but the ones being slaughtered will be young calves.

A spokesperson for Lidl said: “We are selling Deluxe Siberian Reindeer Leg Steaks as part of our premium range of products this Christmas. This also includes other luxury meats such as venison, quail and partridge.

'An incredibly positive reaction from our customers in Christmas 2010 has led to Lidl selling these again this year.

'We aim to offer our customers a wide variety of traditional Christmas products as well as those they may not have had the opportunity to try before.'

Budget stores such as Lidl and Aldi have become more popular with consumers over the last few years, analysts say the harsh economic climate is forcing shoppers to look for bargains.

Last year Lidl and Aldi beat the big four - Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons - and Marks & Spencer for the first time in an annual supermarket satisfaction report.

The reindeer that were butchered and turned into steaks couldn't compete with Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, and Rudolph. They just didn't...

make the cut.

"NYU student replies-all to 40,000 classmates, sparking ‘Replyallcalypse’

We've all been there.

Max Wiseltier, a sophomore at New York University, was simply trying to forward an email from the Bursar's Office to his mother on Monday. Instead, Wiseltier accidentally hit "reply to all," cc'ing 39,979 of his fellow NYU students in the process.

Wiseltier, realizing what he had done, fired off a quick apology. But his email "triggered a rare, University-wide revelation," Kelly Weill wrote in NYU Local, the student newspaper. "We simultaneously realized that any message, complaint, whim, link, video, or GIF could be sent to nearly 40,000 people in an instant."

And thousands of students did.

"So, how is everyone today?" wrote one.

"Does anyone have a pencil I could borrow?" wrote another.

"Would you rather fight 100 duck sized horses, or 1 horse sized duck?" another asked.

A visually inclined student simply attached a photo of Nicolas Cage, which 40,000 students now share and can enjoy whenever they want.

Weill writes:

We had been given a great and terrible power. For a moment we contemplated responsibility, then gleefully tossed it aside in favor of posting pictures of cats. The ensuing hours were referred to as "The Reply-Allpocalypse," "The Day NYU Broke," and "Will Everyone Please Just Shut Up."

How exactly did they obtain such power? It turns out that David Vogelsang, who works at the NYU Student Resource Center, accidentally used the wrong listserv software to send out the innocuous email that sparked the inundation.

"Hi everyone," Vogelsang wrote. "I'm the culprit behind the Lyris blunder. I was assisting the Bursar with an email message and in populating one of the SRC Listserves did not realize the list I was using was one that allowed for responses and thus the 'replyallcalypse.'"

He added: "I take full responsibility for this blunder and offer my sincere apologies for the frustrating situation that was created.""

Quote :
"How a 'model' employee got away with outsourcing his software job to China

Bob was his company’s best software developer, got glowing performance reviews and earned more than $250,000 a year.

Then one day last spring, Bob’s employer thought the company’s computer system had been attacked by a virus.

The ensuing forensic probe revealed that Bob’s software code had in fact been the handiwork of a Chinese subcontractor.

Bob was paying a Chinese firm about $50,000 a year to do his work, then spent the day surfing the web, watching cat videos and updating his Facebook page.

The incident was revealed Monday on a blog http://securityblog.verizonbusiness.com/2013/01/14/case-study-pro-active-log-review-might-be-a-good-idea/ by security experts at the American telecom firm Verizon Enterprise Solutions and has quickly been the talk of tech websites.

“While the large-scale data breaches make the headlines and are widely discussed among security professionals, often the small and unknown cases are the ones that are remembered as being the most interesting,” wrote the blog author, Andrew Valentine, a Verizon senior forensic investigator.

He said the creative but deceitful programmer, whom he called by the pseudonym “Bob,” was a family man and long-time employee in his 40s, “inoffensive and quiet. Someone you wouldn’t look at twice in an elevator.”

For the past two years, the firm, “a U.S. critical infrastructure company,” had increasingly been getting employees to telecommute or work from home.

To connect remotely to the company computer system, staffers needed a personal identification number, which changed at regular intervals. Employees were issued security tokens, small devices that updated them with the latest generated PIN.

Last spring, the company grew concerned about computer security breaches and asked its IT department to inspect more closely its remote-access logs, looking for unusual patterns of activity.

To their surprise, they saw that someone connected into their network every day from Shenyang, a city in the historical Manchurian north of China, near the Korean peninsula.

More interestingly, the Chinese intruder was logged in using Bob’s PIN and credentials, “yet the employee is right there, sitting at his desk, staring into his monitor,” Mr. Valentine wrote.

“Based on what information they had obtained, the company initially suspected some kind of unknown malware that was able [to] route traffic from a trusted internal connection to China, and then back. This was the only way they could intellectually resolve the authentication issue. What other explanation could there be?”

Verizon investigators were contacted. They inspected Bob’s workstation, trying to find whether he had unintentionally downloaded some Chinese computer malware.

Instead, the cyber-sleuths discovered hundreds of invoices from a software developer in Shenyang.

The investigation revealed that Bob had outsourced his job. To get around the changing PINs, he couriered his security tokens to the Shenyang subcontractor.

Looking at his web browsing history, investigators found that Bob spent his workday checking sites such as Reddit, Ebay, Facebook and LinkedIn and watching cat videos. Then he would type an e-mail at the end of the day to update management about his “work” and left at 5 p.m.

The Chinese contractor Bob picked did an excellent job.

“His code was clean, well-written, and submitted in a timely fashion,” Mr. Valentine noted. “Quarter after quarter, his performance review noted him as the best developer in the building.”"

Quote :
"Mom shocked to find mouth of silver after 4-year-old's dental visit

PHOENIX -- An Arizona mom took her daughter in for some routine dental work, but the mom said there was nothing routine about the procedure.

"We went in to have a couple of cavities done and she came out with a mouth full of silver, said mom Alecia White. Every single tooth in her daughter's mouth was capped in stainless steel.

At first, White thought a mistake had been made so she tried to get some answers.

White has two beautiful and healthy children, Zach and his little sister Savannah.

"They're my everything," she said. "They're my entire world."

On a recent trip to the dentist, White discovered that little Savannah had four cavities. So, White allowed the dentist to fill them.

"They took her back and I was allowed to go back when they sedated her and after she was sedated, they had me go back out to the waiting room," White said.

White brought her groggy, little girl home when the procedure was done and let her take a nap. However, when Savannah woke up and White looked in her mouth, she saw that every single tooth, top and bottom, was capped with stainless-steel crowns.

"I didn't expect for her entire mouth to be covered in silver," White said. "We went in to have a couple of cavities done and she came out with a mouth full of silver."

White said not only were she and her husband mortified, but so was 4-year-old Savannah.

"On a daily basis she says, 'Mommy, I don't like my teeth. I don't like my teeth,'" White said. "And it's really kind of hard to hear every single day."

White wanted to know if a mouth full of stainless-steel crowns is normal for a child. So, we consulted Dr. Richard Chaet, who has been in dentistry for more than 30 years.

Chaet is the former president of the Arizona Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and was responsible for writing guidelines for pediatric dentists across the nation. He had never met Savannah, but agreed to look at some photographs we provided.

"I did say 'wow' because she did have a lot of silver caps on her teeth," Chaet said.

Chaet claimed that although it looks bizarre, all of those caps were necessary to fill Savannah's cavities and to save other teeth that were probably deteriorating.

"This is a child who is obviously very high risk for decay," Chaet said.

He went on to say that some dentists probably would have gone a step further by putting on white veneers to cover a lot of those silver caps even if the patient couldn't afford it. Chaet said a lot of dentists would have done it free of charge because children are sensitive about how they feel and look.

And that's exactly what happened to Savannah. Another dentist who actually saw Savannah's teeth offered to put on those veneers free of charge.

White said her daughter looks a lot better, but said it's been a learning process.

"I just want people to be aware of what happened and what's going on out there," White said.

Chaet said two things apparently happened here. First, he said there needed to be better communication between the dentist and White. Chaet said the dentist might have done a better job at explaining the situation and White could have asked more questions. Chaet said parents should always ask several questions before any procedure is performed to make sure they fully understand.

Chaet also said this is a good reminder to take your child to the dentist as early as their first or second birthday so proper dental care can begin. Appointments early in a child's life not only benefits kids, but it allows dentists time to discuss sugary drinks like juices that parents frequently put in bottles and use over time.

Good oral hygeine and education, he said, will prevent decay and keep stainless-steel caps from having to be used."

"Stalker Who Inspired 'The Natural' Dies; Lived Real Life In Obscurity

Though we've seen The Natural many times, we have to confess we didn't know that a real woman shot a real baseball player in 1949 and that their story inspired Bernard Malamud's 1952 book and Robert Redford's 1984 movie.

But over the weekend, obituaries appeared about Ruth Ann Steinhagen, 83, who "disappeared into near obscurity" as the Chicago Tribune says and died last Dec. 29 with little notice.

It wasn't until the Tribune was searching records for another story that it discovered the one-time "femme fatale" had died.

The Associated Press recaps Steinhagen's real-life crime, which happend when she was 19, this way:

"The story began with what appeared to be just another young woman's crush on Eddie Waitkus, the Chicago Cubs' handsome first baseman. So complete was this crush that the teenager set a place for Waitkus, whom she'd never met, at the family dinner table. She turned her bedroom into a shrine to him, and put his photo under her pillow.

"After the 1948 season, Waitkus was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies — a fateful turn. "When he went to the Phillies, that's when she decided to kill him," [author John] Theodore said in an interview.

"Steinhagen had her chance the next season, when the Phillies came to Chicago to play the Cubs at Wrigley Field. She checked into a room at the Edgewater Beach Hotel where he was staying and invited him to her room.

" 'We're not acquainted, but I have something of importance to speak to you about,' she wrote in a note to him after a game at Wrigley on June 14, 1949.

"It worked. Waitkus arrived at her room. After he sat down, Steinhagen walked to a closet, said, 'I have a surprise for you,' then turned with the rifle she had hidden there and shot him in the chest."

Waitkus — like Redford's character — survived. He would go on to play again the next season and and all or part of five more seasons after that. He died in 1972.

Steinhagen was judged to be insane and spent nearly three years in a state hospital where she "underwent electroconvulsive therapy to alter the chemical balance in her brain, as well as hydrotherapy and occupational therapy," the Tribune writes. Eventually considered to be cured, she was released and never tried for the shooting. Steinhagen settled in with her parents and a sister on Chicago's Northwest side. Over the years, the parents and sister died. It isn't known for sure if Steinhagen held any type of job. She never spoke publicly about the shooting, according to the Tribune.

According to the newspaper, "she died Dec. 29 at Swedish Covenant Hospital of a subdural hematoma caused by an accidental fall in her longtime home, a Cook County medical examiner spokeswoman said."

In the movie, the femme fatale was played by actress Barbara Hershey and her character commits suicide after shooting Redford's character, Roy Hobbs. The year isn't 1949 in the reel version of the story — it's the 1930s. And Hobbs isn't an established major leaguer like Waitkus when he's shot. He's a young phenom — "the natural" — who has his best years robbed from him, but returns 15 years later to lead the "New York Knights" to the top of the standings. There's much more to the plot, of course: A bat with a lightning bolt; and old love who comes back into Hobbs' life; a son he never knew about; an evil team owner.

The climax comes when Hobbs hits a long home run into the stadium lights (supposedly in New York City but actually filmed at Buffalo's since-demolished War Memorial Stadium). With lights exploding, he rounds the bases."
