I mean that gripe just makes very little sense so I'm not sure how to address it.

Quote :
"Three high school friends gain superpowers after making an incredible discovery. Soon, though, they find their lives spinning out of control and their bond tested as they embrace their darker sides."

This doesn't happen to movies with "no story": http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/chronicle/

The criticism just seems weird and pretty baseless.

Ok

3 highschool friends? 2 are cousins that aren't very close, at any point even though they try to force the idea that they are throughout the movie up until the end. The third is some popular guy that drags the camera kid into the hole having just met that night. There are no bonds here to be tested.

None of the 3 kids are likable. You can feel compassion for the stereotypical character of Andrew (shy, shitty home life, whatever) but he still isn't likable nor do you ever root for him.

The cousin is a condescending douchebag and his 'change' over the course of the movie is non-existant even though they try to force some kind of transformation on him via the 'relationship' with the blond girl.

The black guy is the least interesting character of them all. Jockish, horndog, always joking around, dies first. herp derp. You don't care that he dies because you don't like him or care what happens to him. Should have just put a red starfleet uniform on him.

The only 'neat' part of the movie is the special powers they get. And they try and milk that way too long without adding any substance. I was bored to death waiting for something interesting to happen.

And what the fuck was with the junkyard scene and the 'apex predator' speech? Hey guys my dad is a drunk and I believe in evolution so now I am going to drop most of my humanity and just start hurting people.

Thats how they decide to tackle the 'dark side' of humanity? 'I think whats happening to me is kind of like being an apex predator'

Just not a good movie all around. Disappointing because the premise is cool.

Coming from someone who claims a movie with a pretty clear-cut tragic hero's journey has "no story."

There's no hero in this movie.

There are 3 unlikable characters that have extremely cookie cutter character types. You actually don't see a single character in this movie that isn't a walking stereotype.

There is no character development for two of the main characters.

There is an asinine journey (and by journey I mean light switch) for one from socially awkward dork to compassion less killer wrapped in a ridiculous apex predator metaphor.

There is a nearly nonsensical third act after repetitive and predictable acts 1 and 2.

This movie had way too much it could have been/done to have ended up the way it did.

The characters are not "walking stereotypes," they all have interesting twists on the crude, simplified classifications you gave them. Steve for instance, becomes a genuinely good person and a great friend to Andrew, despite his "jockish, horndog, always joking around."

Even the seemingly most stereotypical character in the father is only violent because he is grasping for power after being rendered powerless via disability and then the inability to help his wife. Similar to Andrew's violent grasps for power that come later.

And it's a pretty slow burning downfall taking place over a series of events, not sure where you're getting "light switch" from.

figured I get some type of sarcastic reply for the short review, but it was late and didn't know if it would even be read. I just wanted to bump the thread since I'll check out movies if they get good reviews on tww.

I liked how the movie didn't follow the same storyline as other similar stories (dorky guy that has a crush on super hot girl gets powers, misguided jock also gets powers, and the two finally duke it out over the girl). The movie did a good job showing how real teenagers would act if they got these types of powers. I liked how they showed the mental progression of the villain and how he was one of the main characters. There was great action and I loved the effects. It wasn't 2.5 hours long, it was a fast paced but still had a good storyline. It was enjoyable. I liked how the found footage style allowed multiple people to give monologues about their feelings and inner workings without forcing it too much.
