Its one of those things that... Is it a Fiat diesel or a cummins ?

I don't know I'd probably stick with the Eco boost even with the less efficiency gas is cheaper and it has way more hp and I think similar torque.

And no offence but I don't trust an aluminum v6 diesel to last for ever like a would a cummins

it's the Fiat diesel

[Edited on September 5, 2014 at 9:23 PM. Reason : comparing it to the 2500 w/ a cummins doesn't make sense]

Yeah I know I'm just saying

Cummins because I think them and cockroaches will still be alive when the world ends
Ecoboost woo!!! turbos and rpm
Ecodiesel because I can't give it the 300,000 mile trust I would the cummins so I'd take the gas hp instead

i'm talking about a daily driver that pulls the boat on the weekend

i probably wouldn't do it anyway just because that truck is way too damn big for a half ton. i want a small diesel in a truck the size of a Tacoma.

I think they are a fair offering:

ENGINE TYPE: turbocharged and intercooled DOHC 24-valve diesel V-6, iron block and aluminum heads, direct fuel injection

Displacement: 182 cu in, 2988 cc
Power: 240 hp @ 3600 rpm
Torque: 420 lb-ft @ 2000 rpm - (this is basically the same output as the 1994 cummins 160hp engine)

TRANSMISSION: 8-speed automatic with manual shifting mode

DIMENSIONS:
Wheelbase: 120.5-140.5 in
Length: 209.0-237.9 in
Width: 79.4 in Height: 74.4-79.9 in
Curb weight (C/D est): 5150-6200 lb

PERFORMANCE (C/D EST):
Zero to 60 mph: 7.9-8.4 sec
Standing ΒΌ-mile: 16.0-16.7 sec
Top speed: 115 mph

FUEL ECONOMY (C/D EST):
EPA city/highway driving: 20/27 mpg

It's not going to win any races, but I believe it would be of good service. I would want to compare its performance to a new gasser, however I believe it would win out with better fuel economy while towing.

Yes I would love/ prefer either of those. But working with what we have the ecoboost f150 tows better than my 5.4l f150 and I would rather have that engine that has been tested to the 9s to be boulder tough than a diesel that was designed for mpg. They both make 420ft-lbs eb is 500rpm later but only one has 120? hp more because it has a gas redline not a diesel.

But the ecodiesel does do way better around town.

is this firsthand experience with towing similar loads with the two trucks or just based on that propaganda video that all the ford fans were batin' over when the ecoboost first came out?

this is first hand using my truck with my car on a uhaul trailer vs dpr construction's truck with my car on a uhaul trailer... the only difference could have been how much gas was in the galaxie's tank (so assume around 4000lbs + a uhaul trailer)

Mine is an extended cab 4x4 and it was a work truck... didn't seem as high as mine but i think it was still a 4x4... not really sure

Looking at a 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 5.9 Cummins.

new fuel pumps, manual trans

What diesel/model specific things should I look for here oh Dodge Gurus?

- 2000 utilizes the VP44 electronic, rotary injection pump. Common failures are relative to bad low-pressure 'lift pump' that transfers fuel from tank to injection pump. Once they are starved for fuel you'll be looking at damages requiring a new/rebuilt pump
- "53" code blocks prone to cracking, passenger side. Not all 53 blocks crack, but it's a chance.
- manual trans NV4500 (5-speed) sometimes loses the 5-th gear retainer nut; there's a fix, but you cant tell unless you pull the tail-section off
- CAD axle actuator has problems (ties together the long-side front drive shaft during 4x4 engagement, when disengaged it allows differential to rotate freely for improved fuel economy)
- dashes are shit, buy a new one from Geno's Garage

Thanks Dr pepper! I did read up on the fuel pump and 5th gear issues though, but I didn't know about the 53 block issues. Glad I asked here

This is what i'm looking at this thursday.

price is high, but the guy seems to like me after chatting on the phone and needs to sell. So I'm looking for a good deal that's not too insulting. I don't need a truck now, just want to get a good one at a deal.

http://raleigh.craigslist.org/cto/4699441415.html

Known issues: AC doesn't work, driver's window doesn't go down, carpet is dirty. Just passed safety inspection.

I'm thinking 6,500 and going down from there as I find more concerns. Might tow a car now and then, throw some motorcycles in the back of the bed to go to the mountains, play in snow whenever Raleigh gets any, that sorta thing. I've got time, I just want to get in on a good deal.

looks like you've done your homework; I see it's got the 6-speed, sweet.

Also the front ends are ridiculous on these things, so if you test drive keep an eye on the slack in the steering. upgraded boxes are available, as are track-bar kits and stabilizers and whatnot. There are also sector shaft stabilizer kits available that are supposed to help, but I've never seen it first hand.

Yes, and there are a handful of very capable trucks that are nearly smoke free - I think I've posted a handful in this thread.

Short answer - computer controlled 'commonrail' equipped engines run the cleanest - most of the smokey trucks you see are controlled via a statically set mechanical injection pump

Long Answer - paging arghx.

debating whether or not to redo my dad's VW "Caddy" Diesel. Has the 1.5 diesel in it, 50 hp.

Anyone dabble in the VW world? Hard trucks to find in good shape, I'm thinking of doing something like this:

50mpg
