No, it actually looks pretty good. I had an old iPhone and some of the crappy component cables and those were pretty blurry, but this outputs at the actual resolution of the iPad (1024 x 768) so it looks pretty nice. Games play awesome on it too. I'd put up Real Racing on a TV against like...a PS2 game or something like that. I am really impressed with the picture quality.

So if you're on an HDTV it just does 4:3 with black bars on right and left?

There's a zoom slider in the settings of the DisplayOut program that lets you choose between the black bars or cutting off part of the image.

Man, Twitter for iPad is freaking sweet. That's how a UI should work. It really makes me wish I used twitter for more than just following a couple dozen celebrities and iPhone hackers.

^ it is pretty nice; i've used it a few times since the release and have enjoyed it quite a bit

now just gimme some iOS 4 and more (BT) keyboard control on this dang thing and we'll be set. CMD+Tab, CMD+Q etc would freakin rock

So I just saw this commercial on TV.

In it they show somebody using pinch to zoom on a playing video.

WTH?

with youtube videos pinch and zoom just takes you in and out of fullscreen. i don't have any local vids on hand to try but i am expecting that to be an iOS 4 / iMovie treat

I have a copy of Avatar on my iPad that I downconverted from 1080p to the native resolution of the iPad and it ain't doing shit when I pinch.

But yeah, I assume that's something going on with 4.2 or whatever. Just struck me as weird that they'd have it in the commercial when you can't do it on the actual device.

iMovie doesn't currently run on the iPads though. (which is totally in violation of their own app store rules, btw)

When you say "they" do you mean Apple, or advertisers in general? Because I feel like most iPad/iPhone commercials are pretty good about just being a mishmash of a ton of different apps that actually exist and show you things that you can actually do with your device. I can't really think of another Apple ad that does this.

So it looks like in the 4.2 beta the orientation lock switch has now been changed to a mute toggle and orientation lock is now done by software like it is on the iPhone.

To me, that seems kind of dumb to me.

^^i hope you can keep the current setup. mute is easy. just the volume down button for about a second.

i use the orientation lock far more often than i need to mute it anyway.

Well it didn't sound like it was giving you an option, it sounded like they just made the change. I actually HATE how easy it is to accidentally mute the iPad by holding down the volume button for more than .01 seconds, so hopefully they will at least change that, but I still think it would be better to leave it the way it is.

So I just got one of these things yesterday. I'm trying to sync like 14gb of music to it and apparently my USB ports don't have enough power to charge it which is annoying but whatever. My issue is, the screen stays on the entire time it's syncing which is just gonna eat through the battery after hours of syncing. Is there any way to get the screen to turn off while it's syncing?

i think you can just turn off the screen maybe? i never sync mine because i don't really use it for music. but anyway, macs have usb ports with more power. i wonder if they make those double usb dongles with the apple connectors for use with computers with standard usb ports.

The stop automatic sync option is in iTunes when you connect the iPad. It should be on the "general" tab

There's a driver you can download that will allow you to charge your iPad on a Windows PC. I ended up downloading it on my dad's computer so I could charge my iPad at his house one time. You should be able to find it pretty easily with google. I think it's dependent on what type of motherboard and/or USB chipset you have in your computer.

I want advice. I have wanted an Ipad since the day it came out and have found an excuse to not get one. I just got a bit of money that would be nice to blow and am wondering if I should wait a little bit longer for the next gen? I would use the front facing camera that the new one would offer, but that is really the only new feature other than a better screen that I would love to have. Do you think apple would refresh after holidays or wait the full year to do so and come out with a new one in april?

Based on the rumors I have seen, the new iPad should be coming Q1 2011 which could be anywhere from January to March. Seeing as how the last one came in March, I would assume the new one would also, similarly to how the iPhone always launches in June and the iPod is always September. So it just comes down to if you want to wait that long. Personally, I just got mine Sunday and I do not regret the decision.

Based on the rumors I've seen, there should be 2 year old iPhones that work on the Verizon network too.

No one knows anything for sure.

Why not? It's the most compelling product in its class. Kinda helps when the competitors either haven't launched yet or already cancelled the project

I am already a mac user. I have and love my Imac and iphones. I am on the verge of getting a new iphone also, waiting for the unicorn white one. My wife and I would use the ipad as it was meant to be used as a compliment to my main computer (imac).

I see both points, but would you think the second gen is going have anything more compelling than a front facing camera and possibly the retina display?

I've read the rumors about a Retina display on the iPad, but that would put the resolution at 2048 x 1536 (or actually closer to 2529 x 1897 if you want the same dpi as the iPhone, but then all the apps would be FUBAR) which is insane for any sized screen, much less one that's under 10 inches. If I had to make a completely baseless guess, I just don't see that happening.

The next update will include dual cameras, probably 512MB of RAM, and a 7" form factor(alongside the old 10 incher). And probably a 128GB storage option. I wouldn't bet on the resolution being any different though.

My boss at work just hooked me and my coworker each up with the 16GB iPad. I wouldn't have spent my own money on it (I think they are too damn much) but so far it is quite fun, and will be very useful for some of my work.

^^2048 x 1536 would likely require much more hardware than they could put in that small of a space (and keep cool)

Not likely. Even if you're a shameless piece of pirating scum, the App Store is still the easiest place to find the good, free stuff. Who the hell doesn't at least download Pandora or Netflix?

Turns out Nielsen FUBARed their results. I knew that 1/3rd number just couldn't be right.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/10/25/nielsen_restates_ipad_stats/

Honestly, I'm still a bit shocked at the 9% figure as well, but I suppose there are probably a lot of older technophobes that got/were gifted an iPad and haven't really used it too much except for as a novelty or whatever.

For most college age/techno kids, not using the app store seems like a stretch, but my aunt's perfectly happy just reading news/surfing the internet on it, doing email etc. and honestly, the iPad's great for that as well...

i am looking to get a tablet for travel - i will mostly read on it, use navigation features, watch movies, my wife will want to facebook and will need to upload pics to it, my daughter will want to play learning games.

It is not imperative to make a decision now. Should i get an IPAD or wait for a droid pad?

Also, if i get an Ipad, how do I sync my Ipod or upload photos?

^^^^ imo, there's not an Android device on the market or close to it that can really compete with the iPad. The only thing that's going to be out this year is the Samsung which is going to be smaller & as much (or more) in cost. iPad is great as long as you know it's capabilities (or lack thereof). I'd say your best option right now is to buy a use iPad and then maybe sell it in 2011 when the new stuff comes out (other Android devices, "iPad 2", etc.).

Also, you don't sync your ipod to your ipad. Your ipad is basically a big ipod touch. You'll sync both to your computer. You can transfer your photos the same way or if you want to transfer them from the camera to the the ipad then you need the $30 camera connection kit.

For these purposes, definitely an iPad.

It has the most apps now to facilitate these abilities, and it's going to have the fastest, most fluid interface (and the IPS panel is beautiful).

They just showed videos of the new blackberry pad, and it's obviously slower than an iPad.

Android tablet might be nice if it's on fast hardware, but you're not going to have as many kid-friendly entertainment choices.
