Israel doing what it does best and is an expert at -- ethnic cleansing.

Palestinian family evicted from Jerusalem home of half century

Quote :
"OCCUPIED JERUSALEM — Israeli police on Tuesday evicted a Palestinian family from the east Jerusalem home in which they lived for over half a century, making way for Israelis deemed the legal occupants.

The Shamasneh family has for years been fighting a court battle against Jewish claimants who said that the building was their family property, which they fled when East Jerusalem was occupied by Jordanian troops in the 1948 war that led to the creation of the Jewish state

Under Israeli law, if Jews can prove their families lived in East Jerusalem homes before the 1948 war they can demand that Israel's general custodian office release the property and return their "ownership rights".

During the war, thousands of Jews fled Jerusalem as Jordanian-led Arab forces seized the city, while hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled from land that was later to become Israel.

No such law exists for Palestinians who lost their land.

In 2013 the Israeli Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Jewish claimants, who subsequently sold the property on.

An AFP journalist on Tuesday saw young Jewish men moving into the building after the Shamasnehs were escorted out by police.

Fahamiya Shamasneh, 75, told AFP that police arrived before dawn ordering her, her sick husband Ayoub, 84, their son and his family out of the house in the upscale Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood where the couple lived for 53 years.

"What greater injustice is there than this?" she said. "Maybe we will sleep in the street."

It was the first eviction in the neighborhood since 2009, according to Israeli anti-occupation group Peace Now, part of a fight over the disputed status of Jerusalem.

Israel sees the city as its undivided capital, while the Palestinians want the eastern sector as their future capital.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem in the Six-Day War of 1967 and later annexed it in a move never recognized by the international community.

Around 200,000 Israeli Jews now live in East Jerusalem in settlement homes considered illegal under international law.

Peace Now says the house is part of a larger process of establishing settlements in Sheikh Jarrah.

"Settlers are already inside the Shamasneh family's home," it said in a statement Tuesday morning.

"The eviction of the Shamasneh family, who resided in the house since 1964, is not only brutal but it is also indicating a dangerous trend that could threaten a future compromise in Jerusalem," it said. — AFP"

Palestinian leader tries to put Trump on notice with warning

JOSEF FEDERMAN | AP | Published — Monday 25 September 2017

Quote :
"JERUSALEM: Overshadowed by last week’s showdown between the US and North Korea, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued an ominous warning in his address to the United Nations: With hopes running out for an independent Palestinian state, the Palestinian leader said he may have no choice but to seek a single, binational state with Israel.

While Abbas appears to be in no hurry to disband his self-rule government, his threat raises an awkward scenario for Israel and the Trump administration that could potentially spell doom for the century-old Zionist enterprise.

Abbas was a mastermind and negotiator of the historic Oslo peace accords of the 1990s — interim deals that set a five-year goal for reaching a final agreement. Since then, he has remained a vocal supporter of pursuing a negotiated peace agreement that would establish an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.

But after nearly a quarter century of failed US-led peace efforts, the 82-year-old Abbas told the world body last Wednesday that time is running out as Israel expands its settlements on occupied lands.

“The two-state solution is today in jeopardy,” he said, saying that the Palestinians will have to “look for alternatives” if the door is closed to independence.
“If the two-state solution were to be destroyed due to the creation of a one-state reality with two systems — apartheid,” he said, “this would be a failure, and neither you, nor we, will have any other choice but to continue the struggle and demand full, equal rights for all inhabitants of historic Palestine.”

Abbas has issued similar threats before. But the timing and high-profile venue of his speech gave his comments some added urgency. The Palestinians are eagerly waiting for President Donald Trump to present his vision for peace, and are desperately seeking his endorsement of a two-state solution.

“President Abbas sent a direct message to the US administration, saying: Either you save the two-state solution or we are going to end up in one state where our people are going to ask for full rights,” said Mohammed Ishtayeh, a top adviser to Abbas.

A White House official said the administration understands the difficulties involved, but remains optimistic and is having “productive conversations with both sides.” The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was discussing behind-the-scenes diplomacy.

The Palestinians seek the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip — territories Israel captured in the 1967 Mideast war — for their future state. The international community, including Trump’s predecessors, has long supported the two-state solution, believing that partitioning the land into Israeli and Palestinian states is the best way to ensure peace.

The reasoning is rooted in demographics. Most demographers believe the number of Jews and Arabs in these areas is close to equal. Relinquishing control of territories with several million Palestinians would ensure Israel’s future as a democracy with a solid Jewish majority. Continued control over the Palestinians, on the other hand, could force Israel to choose between its Jewish character and remaining a democracy.

With this in mind, Israel withdrew from Gaza, now home to 2 million Palestinians, in 2005. Yet it also has strengthened its grip on the West Bank and east Jerusalem, together home to over 600,000 Israelis and an estimated 2.7 million Palestinians, making any future separation increasingly difficult. Israel has some 1.8 million Arab citizens and 6.5 million Jews, according to its Central Bureau of Statistics.

Israel has annexed east Jerusalem and considers the area, home to sensitive religious sites, an inseparable part of its capital. Although the annexation is not internationally recognized, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed never to divide the city.

The fate of the West Bank is even more complicated. Israel has established scores of settlements without declaring it to be part of Israel. The result is a complicated reality where Israeli settlers enjoy the protection of the Israeli military and the rights of Israeli citizenship, while Palestinians are subject to a combination of autonomy under Abbas’ Palestinian Authority and Israeli military law. Critics, including Abbas, frequently compare this two-tiered system to South African apartheid.

Israeli hard-liners have offered a host of reasons to oppose Palestinian independence. They claim Israel’s pre-1967 boundaries would be indefensible, point to past peace proposals rejected by the Palestinians and note the bloody second Palestinian uprising of the early 2000s and Hamas takeover of Gaza in 2007. They cite the Jewish biblical connection to the West Bank, say that expanded Palestinian autonomy should be sufficient or claim that Abbas is weak or cannot be trusted.

But they have struggled to provide an answer if the Palestinians give up their aspirations for independence and instead seek equality and Israeli voting rights. Coping with this dilemma, Netanyahu offered conditional support for Palestinian independence upon taking office in 2009. But since Trump’s election, Netanyahu has stopped talking about a two-state solution.

Netanyahu’s office did not respond to requests for comment on Abbas’ speech. His UN Ambassador, Danny Danon, last week said Abbas had “spread falsehoods.”

“Today’s lies and excuses have proven once again that the Palestinian leadership is a serial evader of peace,” he said.

It seems unlikely that Abbas will follow through on his warning. The Palestinian president controls a budget of hundreds of millions of dollars, tens of thousands of jobs and travels the world with VIP status. His aides admit there are no immediate plans to disband the internationally backed Palestinian Authority.

Palestinian officials say his speech was meant to rouse an international community that has stopped paying attention to them and to remind the world that the alternatives to inaction are worse.

“We told the Americans it’s the last chance for the two-state solution,” Ishtayeh said."

Fucking US Ambassador to Israel

Quote :
"“In addition to his long-standing support for Israeli settlements, and after referring to the ‘alleged occupation’ of Palestinian land, he has the audacity to maintain that Israel occupies only 2 percent of the West Bank and that illegal settlements that carve, annex and steal Palestinian land are part of Israel,” Ashrawi said.

“The occupation exists. Settlements are illegal under international law and constitute a war crime. These facts and realities are not in question.”

Americans for Peace Now (APN) called on President Donald Trump to recall Ambassador Friedman for making statements that blatantly contradict long-held US policy.

“The truth is simple: Friedman is an obstacle to peace, a source of provocation and instability, and is therefore unfit to serve. We call on President Trump to immediately recall him from Tel Aviv and replace him with a person who would better serve our national interests in this sensitive and vital post,” APN said."

With Trump in the driver's seat, of course this is not surprising.

I know no one gives a shit about this issue anymore since Trump, but still....

A British airline shamefully apologizes for writing 'Palestinian' on dish
Knowing that they were right and had simply stated a factual truth, the airline still went on to apologize for the "offense caused"...

https://stepfeed.com/a-british-airline-shamefully-apologizes-for-writing-palestinian-on-dish-1023

Watch this 1-minute video: https://twitter.com/ajplus/status/962703526802612225

Basically, they renamed a dish from "Palestinian [X]" to just "[X]", because some Zionists shat their pants, even after acknowledging that the name was correct.

Gotta keep those Zionists happy!

^I think everything about that situation is dumb.

It was dumb for someone to complain about it.

It was dumb for the airline to remove it.

And it's most dumb that the airline called it anything ethnic in the first place.

Nothing else on the menu referred to the item by where the recipe came from. They were making a statement by using "Palestinian" and then made it clear to the world they were removing it because pro-Israel people complained.

The same thing happened the other way around recently when a specifically Israeli hummus recipe was accused of re-appropriating who gets to culturally own hummus. Which is also just dumb on every side.

It's just another wedge to drive between people who otherwise could be working towards dialogue of understanding. Certainly we can get through a meal without arguing who the food belongs to.

Quote :
"JERUSALEM — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should be indicted in two corruption cases on suspicion of accepting bribes, fraud and breach of trust, police recommended Tuesday, ramping up pressure on the leader who has served more than a decade in office.

After more than a year of investigations, Israeli police said they believe there is sufficient evidence against the prime minister to indict him on suspicion of giving political favors for gifts worth around $280,000 in total and of cutting a deal with a newspaper publisher for favorable coverage. Israel’s attorney general must now decide whether to proceed with charges, a process that could take months. "

Quote :
"His disparaging of the police and regular criticism of the media have drawn comparisons to how President Trump has handled the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Netanyahu has even borrowed from Trump’s phrase book, using the term “fake news” to describe media coverage. Israel’s president, Reuven Rivlin, has warned that the country’s democracy is in peril because of attacks on the free press and judiciary by Netanyahu’s right-wing government. "

Nah, because most Israelis will agree that BB is corrupt and needs to be ousted. Hummus and couscous is somehow more arguable and controversial and therefore more fun to bring up.

The next Israeli national election will be in November 2019. Polls are already starting to paint a picture.

If the election were held today, the Israeli knesset would looke like this (change from current number of seats in parentheses):

Right of Center (-3)
Likud 27 (-3)
Yisrael Beiteinu 6 (no change)

Left of Center (+8)
Zionist Union 16 (-8)
Yesh Atid 25 (+14)
Meretz 7 (+2)

Centrist (-5)
Kulanu 5 (-5)

Orthodox (+2)
Jewish Home 11 (+3)
Shas 5 (-2)
UTJ 7 (+1)

Arab (+2)
Joint List 11 (+2)

Liberal and Arab parties combine for +10. -6 for the current leading coalition (Conservative, orthodox, and centrist groups). A 16-seat swing, while the current coalition only has a 7-seat majority. Plus many people think Kulanu will join whichever coalition gives them the best chance to push their issues. A coalition of Yesh Atid (25), Zionist Union (16), Meretz (7), and Kulanu (5) would make 53 seats out of 120.

61 are needed to pick the Prime Minister, and the liberal groups can't get there without Arab support. The Joint Arab List says they will not be a part of any coalition, no matter how left-wing the groups may be.

So then you have the right-wing parties Likud (27), YB (6), Jewish Home (11), Shas (5), UTJ (7), for 56 total. If that's the case, after the liberal parties fail to form a majority coalition, Kulanu will absolutely sign on giving this group 61 exactly.

So despite a higher percentage of Israelis wanting a peace plan which includes a freeze on settlement building, the establishment of a non-violent Palestinian state with non-terrorist leaders, and an end to the suffering of all Israeli AND Palestinian people...they'll end up instead with the same crap government because members of the Arab parties refuse to participate.

It's an ethnic cleansing. It has always been an ethnic cleansing.

This thread, which is almost ten years old, has documented the incremental and piecemeal aggression of a hostile military over a powerless people with the end goal being the total seizure of foreign land. It honestly blows my mind when people view these actions as isolated incidents rather than connecting the obvious dots staring them in the face.

Out of 12 million Palestinians in the world, at least 6 million of them are officially-counted refugees. 2 million of those are in Gaza and the West Bank, and if you consider the rest of the Palestinians in Israel, who are literal prisoners, that makes 9 out of 12 million who are displaced or imprisoned. I'd say they're doing a pretty fucking good job.

How I feel about the country as a whole is irrelevant, since everything is to blame on the leadership, of which I've been incredibly critical. And yeah, some rich old Jewish American paid for me to go 14 years ago on a trip after which I was saying that we didn't really see anything non-touristy and I didn't feel like I got a real experience of what it's like to live there. I did get that experience last summer when I went with my wife to spend time with her Israeli family, who do not hate nor want death for Palestinians despite the fact that their town of Sderot had been bombarded with missiles all throughout the summer of 2014. Because they, too, do not blame the people, they blame the leadership of both sides.

Quote :

As are many many many people who live there. Just as many many Americans protest the policies of our government (and Netanyahu has half the approval rating of Trump). In a recent poll 48% of Israelis said Netanyahu should quit.

If thousands of Mexicans were gathering at the Texas border with guns, knives, and explosives, and under orders to "rip the hearts out" of Americans, then you'd be able to make the comparison between Trump's border wall and the Israeli security fence.

This is an amazing turn of phrase, and everyone should take note. Let's break it down:

Notice how he refers to Trump's border "Wall." A "wall" that does not even exist yet (and hopefully never will). Yet he refers to the apartheid wall (an ACTUAL FUCKING WALL THAT ACTUALLY FUCKING EXISTS) in much softer language. It is merely a "fence." Like it's just a picket fence that keeps the dog from peeing on your neighbors posies.

The focused attempt to rebrand this:

As a fence is fucking absurd. Language matters. This is a wall. It is a massive barrier.

Quote :

Except this is EXACTLY how Trump has described migrants seeking asylum in the United States. He said so on the campaign trail. He referred to them quite brazenly as rapists and murderers. He talks incessantly about MS13 much the same way the Israeli government speaks of Palestinians. He openly muses that there are millions of them out there, who voted illegally. He is rhetorically priming a nation to accept his wall and ruthless measures (such as the increased deployment of ICE in communities of color) as necessary to protect "us" from the hoards of dangerous brown people, much like you just did with your sentence above. Once this "wall" is complete, the next logical step is to strip away the last remnants of humanity from those on the opposing side by labeling them as dangerous so that any lethal force used against them will be considered justified by a compliant nation. And what bothers me the most about it, is that it will work, because there will be people much like yourself who will buy into this line of thinking and allow it.

I'll leave you with a little Hannah Arendt, a Jewish refugee who escaped persecution in Nazi Germany and then wrote about how Totalitarian governments successfully dehumanize refugees rhetorically before committing acts of violence against them:

Quote :
"The moment human beings lacked their own government and had to fall back upon their minimum rights, no authority was left to protect them and no institution was willing to guarantee them...The clearer the proof of their inability to treat stateless people as legal persons and the greater the extension of arbitrary rule by police decree, the more difficult it is for states to resist the temptation to deprive all citizens of legal status and rule them with an omnipotent police...The point is that a condition of complete rightlessness was created before the right to live was challenged...

The more the number of rightless people increased, the greater became the temptation to pay less attention to the deeds of the persecuting governments than to the status of the persecuted.”"

-- Origins of Totalitarianism

This what you are doing when you label "thousands" of Arabs at the borders as vicious monsters hell bent on mayhem. You build up this narrative because it relieves you of your duty to view them as humans with basic rights.

Quote :
"they blame the leadership of both sides"

"On many sides...on many sides"

Another Trumpism.

It's hard not to be condescending when someone dismisses ethnic cleansing because it's not complete genocide. It's okay though, we've all been indoctrinated at one point or another.

^^Some of it is a wall, some of it is a fence. Where the protests/riots are happening it's a fence. Wouldn't do them much good to bring bolt cutters if they were trying to break through a concrete wall.

There's a difference between Trump making unsubstantiated claims and there being actual bombs going off and explosives being tossed at the border, with burning tires meant to hide movement but are poisoning the air. I've also never heard any claims of Enrique Peña Nieto calling for the annihilation of America, while Yehia al-Sinwar's actual words were "we will tear their hearts from their bodies."

Folks here keep accusing me of thinking all Palestinians are monsters when I have never said or thought such a terrible thing. I believe there are 1.5 million good people in Gaza who are suffering for the cold hearts of others, some who are Israeli and some who are Hamas. They are caught in the middle of warring ideologies, as are Israeli citizens but Israel has better means of defense so their people have not suffered anywhere near the same casualty count.

Hamas keeps it's own people in the drain, convinces them that ALL of their problems are Israel's fault and taking none of the blame. And then offers them money to send their 14-year-old sons to intentionally die. Money that came from foreign nations meant for humanitarian aid, but Hamas makes them earn it.

The British gave them a bad deal, Israel took more away from them in the 1948 and 1967 wars, and peace plan after peace plan has fallen apart because everyone's priorities clash with each other's and no one has been willing to budge on their pride. Except that Israel disengaged and forcibly removed their own citizens from Gaza in order to give it back to the Palestinians in 2005, and Hamas (already acknowledged around the world to be a terrorist organization) took the opportunity to grab power and never let go. And now they pay to die.

This is THE MOST liberal, limp-dicked analysis of all time considering this issue. Even if we accepted your premise that 1.5 MILLION fucking people are being punished for the actions of others (which we absolutely shouldn't, this is some "many sides" bullshit), in what moral universe is it okay to collective punish 1.5 million fucking people?

Ohhhh, it's all just sooo sad, it's a crisis that just sort of appeared out of thin air.

You are doing exactly what I quoted above: "Paying less attention to the deeds of the persecuting governments than to the status of the persecuted"

This refusal to assign blame to the colonizing force is fucking pathetic. This sort of evening of blame on all sides is some weak-ass shit. You just showed a picture of refugees burning tires in an open air prison and accused them of "POISONING THE AIR" as justification for the slaughter of protesters. One nation causes a humanitarian disaster and then uses the conditions brought forth by that disaster as justification for the lethal use of force against their victims. What else are they supposed to do? Sit and patiently wait for their oppressors to liberate them? Ask nicely?

^^Absolutely valid.

^Once again ignoring half of what I say and filling in the rest of my argument in your head. Just because I don't give them all the blame does not mean I give them no blame. I've been very critical of the Israeli regime, the settlements in occupied territories, and the inhumane treatment of Palestinians.

There are not "many sides." There are three sides. One imperial government, one terrorist "government," and the people stuck in the middle doing all the suffering for it. And at no point did I ever say it was ok, or that I'm ok with it, or that this is how it should be.

I push back against the argument that it's entirely Israel's fault, not against the fact that Palestinians are suffering. The pictures I posted were to show that they were at a fence and not a wall and had nothing to do with the rest of my post. I did not say or even infer that they deserved to be shot for burning tires.

I want to thank those who disagree with me but take the time to process my words instead of just assuming that I have an extremist position.

At what point do you believe violence against oppressors is justified, on a scale from Gaza to the Warsaw Ghetto?

I mean seriously, you admit that Palestinians have been systematically discriminated against, displaced, and imprisoned, but you don't think the oppressed have a right to respond with acts of war?
