not true at all.

skill set is THE MAIN FACTOR in basketball. no matter the position. you can be 8 feet tall but if you have no clue how to shoot a basketball or jump youre screwed.

you can be as fast as Degand was but not be able to dribble or stop.

you can be as short as earl boykin and still make a career in the NBA if your SKILL SET is there. doesnt matter the height.

DYK Wood has already played 200 more minutes than Archie did in his career

Easy to have the legs for bombs when you average 22 minutes a game

Gheorghe Muresan says hello.

No shit you have to be able to do skillful things to play at a high level. But if you are 7 feet tall, you know how much simpler those things get?? The taller you are, the less skills you have to have. The less dribbling you have to do and the less further out you have to shoot.

You ever notice that the midgets who play in the NBA are quick as lightening bugs and/or can jump out of the gym??

Scott Wood wouldn't have to be 6'5" if he could jump like Nate Robinson or was as quick as Mugsey Bogues. But he can't do those things...so it's a good thing he's tall enough to get off his shot. If he's 6'...he's get 10-15 minutes a game. He already can't get a shot off against the best teams in the conference...5 inches shorter and he's struggling to get those shots off against Wake and BC.

Exactly. He got a scholarship to play basketball at an ACC school because he was 7'3". Height meant everything in his case.

"There are three groups of people who are virtually guaranteed to die rich from the moment they are born.

First off, we can point to the descendants of the super-wealthy. The Forbes’ 2011 list of the top-10 wealthiest Americans includes half who inherited a sizable portion of their wealth (three Waltons and the Koch brothers).

Second, we can look to those born with the capacity to accurately throw a baseball 90 miles per hour with their left arm. CC Sabathia, Johan Santana, Barry Zito, Mike Hampton, Cliff Lee have the five richest contracts ever given to a pitcher. They were respectively born in Vallejo, Venezuela, Las Vegas, Florida and Arkansas with very little in common except for the fact that they have the power and endurance in their left arm to throw six to eight effective MLB innings every five days.

Third, we have seven-footers with even a little bit of athleticism and coordination. Their worst case scenario is a full-ride scholarship at a fine university and...It doesn’t matter if you were born in Lithuania like Arvydas Sabonis and Jonas Valanciunas, Nigeria like Hakeem Olajuwon, or in Everett, Massachusetts like Nerlens Noel, basketball scouts and coaches will find you and do everything within their power to turn you into a multi-millionaire by your early twenties. There is no such thing as a 6-foot-2 project point guard, but coaches will always find the next Alexis Ajinca and Sim Bhullar they can invest their resources on even as large longshots."

Height/length is a bigger factor in defense.

Although in Wood's case, being able to shoot over people helps him out a lot. The reason he sucks against unc is because they can put someone faster, stronger and his height on him. Against all the mid majors he bombs on he's either shooting over an Alex Johnson or some white guy just as slow as him

you guys have to understand that scott wood is a college player.

he isn't a pro that can, in theory, be relied upon to perform a certain task in any game he plays. he's a guy that we recruited to shoot the ball that has essentially zero nba potential. sometimes he's going to be covered by somebody that can cover him. it's just going to happen.

Hope we run some sets next year with three basketballs, or maybe one where Purvis does pushups on a ball

And not to sound like a simonn, but it seems almost like a bad idea that he's basically doing commercials for these guys

I'm ready to see what Gottfried can do with these guys. If everyone comes back, this team is a monster on paper. No way we shouldn't stroll into the tourney and challenge for the ACC.

i know calipari can do it w/ freshmen, but i'm personally not making plans to be good based on freshmen ever again. just not reliable enough.

We'll start 1 freshman next year. 2 tops, and that's only if Warren is better than advertised. While I'm excited about Warren and Purvis in particular, its not like we will be relying on them to lead the team.

Its safe to assume that the guys coming back will all improve, and that we will get some production out of the freshmen. This team is gonna be pretty damn good next year, provided that Leslie doesn't do anything crazy like declaring for the draft.

if you're not really considering the freshmen, then where are the 3s going to come from? you can't have one player on a team that can reliably hit an open jumpshot. also, where are the minutes going to come from? cj williams shoots the 3 better than anyone but wood, and gives us more minutes than anyone but brown and wood.

i'm not dogging on the team, but to say that we'll stroll into the tournament next year seems kind of baseless. i think we make it, but it won't be a stroll in the slightest unless we can get some really good minutes from purvis, including hitting open looks, and lorenzo brown develops a jumpshot (which he should do for his own sake if he wants to play in the league).

we're losing 31 minutes and 12 points per game, our best defender, our most efficient shooter (based on fg%, i'm not going to bother looking up efg%) and our #2 threat from behind the arc. could be worse, but that's hardly a scenario where the team is going to improve enough to go from needing to make a run with 3 weeks left in the regular season to make the tournament to a tournament lock.

there's also no way that the acc is this bad again next year.

i could be wrong, but that's how i see it.

This is all true, but I think Lewis will still be an upgrade from Johnson, and even having a couple more warm bodies to absorb fouls will be a huge help. I'd say enough to absorb the loss of Williams. Purvis looks ready to play in the ACC, at least. Haven't seen much of Warren.

^^ oh, I agree. I just think that this time might be different. We actually stole some recruits (purvis, Warren) from some legit schools. Not some Costner-Sendek offense-specific player. These are burger boys that the UNC's and Kentucky's of the world would cheat to have. But, our last class had the same feeling. This time *might*, and has a good chance, of being different.

Sincere (but non-bullet), state fan.

I think we will have decent 3 point shooting between Harris, Warren, Zo, and possibly even Purvis or Lewis. Our 2nd best 3-point shooter probably won't be as good as CJW has been this year, but we'll have some passable options on the court at least.

Actually his mechanics look very solid just isn't connecting. Definitely needs to work on it but he can easily be a good enough shooter that he can't be left wide open.

to me it seems like Zo gets so amped up, especially against UNCCHEAT, that he doesn't play within himself. Because he has dominated a lot of the other guards he's played against this year. Looks like he's trying to win the game with one shot when he plays UNCCHEAT

The thing about Zo is that he's a rhythm player. Cross up a guy and pull up for a jumper? No problem, he can do that. But if a guy kicks the ball out to him and he's wide open for a 3? Not really his game. Although to his credit it seems he's worked on it. Hopefully someone has got it in his head that he needs to make that shot if he wants to collect NBA paychecks and he comes back next year knocking them down

i know. if i'm lorenzo brown, i spend the entire summer doing nothing but shooting 3s. a ton of money to be made if he can hit that shot consistently.

same w/ leslie, to a lesser extent. he's got a lot more to work on than brown, but he's got to get rid of that super high arc and learn to shoot this summer.

^fwiw, this was jarret jack's biggest improvement between soph and junior season (iirc, but it could be fresh to soph). I remember him talking about shooting something like 300 3s per day during the offseason.

If Zo can do the same thing, then he would be even more deadly.

Zo and Leslie should be shooting continuously in the offseason, while Wood should be dribbling.
