"I've always liked Mike Montgomery. If we can get him, that'd be pretty awesome."

FYI they are talking about Mark Montgomery the Michigan State assistant not Mike Montgomery the Cal coach.

^That's fine and dandy but there are plenty of worse situations coaches can start in. See Bzdelik at Wake, Crean at Indiana, heck I would say Bennett at UVA has less to work with. Like it or not, a bunch of coaches would love to have a few 4/5* players when they start out. Granted I know we only had 6, but those 6 were pretty highly rated. Whether it was them not living up to their potential or coaching, the situation wasn't that dire. I mean Lowe's most successful year was his first.

I am definitely not disputing that others have had it worse. I just think he is a mediocre coach with potential put in a tough situation. Crean is a really good coach, and he has done very well with IU (I can't comment on the other 2 guys because I don't really follow those programs).

It's the same reason why some teams choose to draft a guy in the first round then sit him for a year or two (particularly QB's). It gives them time to get acclimated, so they are actually ready for the big time challenges when they come (and let's face it, coaching at NCSU is a huge challenge.)

Id love to land Jay Wright, his contract only runs till 2012.

if not him, Mike Brey is a decent pickup along with the Miller bros.

I'm kind of at peace now that there's nothing to argue about until the coaching search.

I do feel sorry for Smith. No NCAA tourney for his whole career. He deserves better.

Let's hope Yow is a lot better than Fowler at keeping our current players and recruits on board. I'm a little excited about getting someone in here who can actually coach.

first and foremost, mentioning jay wright should be a suspendable offense.

secondly

what the fuck are you talking about? he's gone 6-25 (1-17), 10-21 (4-14), 12-11 (3-7). maybe he came into a really tough situation, but you cannot say that he's done well there, b/c he's done horribly.

I know you probably don't follow the Big 10 or IU, but when Crean came there, IU was facing major violations leading to 3 years of probation. Getting anyone to come play for IU was a challenge, much less anyone who had a clue about how to play basketball. He has really turned the program around, from a doormat starting a bunch of no-name freshmen, to a team that is finally fairly competitive within their conference. They have won two straight games against ranked opponents after 19 straight losses, and honestly, of the 6 games against ranked teams they played, they only were not "in" one game (against Ohio State).

Tom Crean is an awesome coach, and if NCSU could land someone of his caliber they would be extremely fortunate.

Crean is a very, very good coach and if he would leave IU for State (hahahahahahhahahahah) you'd have to be one of the dumbest people alive not to want him.

I saw someone mention Capel earlier and I think he could be a decent comparison to Crean, minus actually having his own high-major success..

i would never turn down tom crean, and i feel dumb even discussing it b/c there's no reason whatsoever to leave a struggling indiana program for a struggling nc state program.

however, if we're talking dream hires, tom crean isn't even on my radar.

I guess I don't understand why you wouldn't place him in that top category. A 44 year old coach who has made a Final Four, has loads of high-major experience and isn't afraid to jump in to a shitty situation.

I agree it's silly to even talk about him, but I've never understood your aversion to calling him a top coach. He is and his time at Indiana, much like Marquette, will prove that...

V and IIRC, wasn't Griffin handed to him by Sampson or am I off a year? that's why I said "his own" high-major success

^^^ i just am not that impressed w/ him, honestly. save his final four appearance and he's made the tournament four times, for a combined single win. his coaching record is actually nearly identical to paul hewitt.

crean: 217-153 (0.586), 5 ncaa appearances, 1 final four, 1 second round over 12 seasons
hewitt: 242-169 (0.589), 6 ncaa appearances, 1 final four, 2 second rounds over 13 seasons

you can say what you want about being marquette in the big east, or the states of marquette and indiana before he got there, but i just don't think that he's a guy that's a sure thing to really do well.

like i said, i'd hire him in a heartbeat, but if we're going to talk about totally unrealistic things he's not in my conversation.

MAYBE?? MAYBE??

Here you go retard:

Quote :
"Between Crean's hiring and the start of the 2008–09 season, freshman phenom Eric Gordon opted to leave early for the NBA, DJ White graduated and was drafted, two players (including Jordan Crawford) transferred and three others were kicked off the team. As a result, Crean was left with a roster with only two returning players, only one of whom was on scholarship (the two players combined for 30 points in the previous season)."

The fact that he was able to win one conference game his first year was an accomplishment in itself. In just his third year he has Indiana competitive in every game they've played (they've had no Wisconsin type games and have had a shot in every game) and they've already won a couple conference games and beat a ranked team.

He's also starting to recruit very well.

Indiana fans are extremely pleased with the coaching job he's done there so far (and they are a picky group). We have absolutely zero shot of pulling him from Indiana, but IMO, he's one of the best coaches in the country.

Stop it. It was nothing close to that. Sidney had five-deep of 4/5* talent. Crean had walk-ons.

Lowe's "horrible situation" was due to lack of quality depth six and seven deep. Not running out scrub walk-ons for an entire season.

And I don't know if jbrick mentioned it, but one of the stars of the early round of the NCAAs the year Crean took over was Arman (sp?) Bassett, who Crean showed the door his first year.

Honest question... I wonder if we'd have a shot at Crean just based on the fact that he's on quite a hot seat in Indiana.

I realize we're not nearly the job of Indy, but I wonder if he'd be interested in leaving due to an uncertain future?

Some of you would know about how hot his seat is there. Crean is a good coach.

(And i realize it'll never happen, obviously, just a thought).

Quote :
"And that's just not true."

Yes it is.

The only way we land Jay Wright is if Villanova burns to the ground. He can have any major job he wants. If UConn, Kentucky, UCLA, or any other top notch school opens, Jay Wright is automatically a top 3 candidate. If he does leave, it won't be for NC State.

We tried to approach him last time and he wouldn't talk to us.

My point wasn't that the situations were the same, just that they were both in bad spots and produced results that correlated with the suckiness of their predicaments (and the irony in some people letting Crean off the hook while holding Sid fully responsible).

Crean's first roster was gutted, and he didn't win shit. Sid's first roster was short on depth and long on guys who didn't want to play/couldn't play in his system/got hurt/weren't responding to his coaching style/whatever and he won very little.

Terrible situation = terrible season, bad situation = bad season

Lowe has since shown that his lack of success is due to other issues, but that wasn't where I was going.

First...aren't we all kind of anti-Sid now?? I mean, as far as him remaining our coach, I think we all would like him replaced. I still like the guy, but I don't think anyone is still on his coaching bandwagon.

And what's so funny about harping how tough his situation was?? He's shown that he can improve on a horrible situation, Sidney has not...and I wasn't even trying to make a comparison, I was just saying that Crean can coach.

They still love him. I went over to the IU boards just see if there was any discussion about his coaching and thought I saw a thread that might be considering negative...only to open it and find more praise. He's still got 100% support right now.

^They actually have three wins, barely halfway into the conference season and have now beaten two ranked teams (and barely lost to MSU in overtime at East Lansing). Look at the rest of their games and they are close in every one.

Three wins, my bad. That puts them in a tie for next to last instead of a tie for last.

Every one?

Lost by 12 to BC, by 19 to UK, by 6 to a not very good Northern Iowa, by 9 to Colorado, Penn St. and Wisconsin, by 14 to Iowa

If 9-10 point losses are considered close losses, then we've been a lot more competitive this season than I realized.

Meant to say most every one, but my point still stands. And 2/3 point games can easily turn to 9-10 point losses once teams start fouling (I actually think that's been one of the pro-Sid's main arguments after losses..."we were in that game!!"). Bottom line is that they're not getting blown out...they laid an egg at Iowa and their worst losses are to the #1 Ohio State and #10 Kentucky.

No 41 point losses in there.

I'm not trying to compare Sid and Crean, I thought I made that clear.

There's just very little evidence that Crean is doing very well in an absolute sense. He's doing okay considering the circumstances, but he's got a long, long way to go.
