i hate to be that guy who's always calling for untested players... but i'd like to see more tracy smith. i wish we had johnny thomas right now, too. he seems like he'd be a little more energetic. i don't know.

Who's that little redheaded guy who's always sitting on the bench? He seems like he'd really want to play.

Not saying he'd be better than the guys we've got now, but give him a minute or two to see what he can do... if he actually puts some effort into it he might actually be more productive than some of our current starters.

^^^Oh, I doubt it would fix anything. But if the team is going to suck in non-playoff and non-rivalry games, it doesn't really matter that much who we suck with.

"What's going on with the Wolfpack?
NCSU's struggles have many scratching their heads and asking questions
Chip Alexander, Staff Writer

RALEIGH - Four wins, three losses, almost too many questions to ponder and answer. For N.C. State, that's the situation after a humiliating 23-point loss at Michigan State, followed by a 75-69 loss at East Carolina on Saturday that arguably was the program's worst in more than 20 years.
Wolfpack fans can quibble over it -- and many have the last few days, judging by the message-board meltdowns -- but one probably must go back to the Pack's 67-62 loss at Tampa (a Division II school) in December 1986 to find a more sobering defeat.

The late Jim Valvano, then the Pack's coach, missed the Tampa game because of illness. NCSU coach Sidney Lowe was in Greenville but may have felt ill after losing to the Pirates, who never had beaten an ACC team in men's basketball.

"At the moment we're still learning," Lowe said. "It's not time to panic. We need to look at the team and where we are. ... We need to keep working, We need to learn how to win."

With semester-ending exams this week, the Wolfpack does not play again until Saturday, when N.C. State faces South Carolina State (3-6) at the RBC Center. But here are a few basketball questions:

Where's Ben McCauley?

The 6-foot-10 junior was one of the ACC's most productive players a season ago and one of the most intense. Lowe called him a warrior, saying McCauley would run through walls for him.

McCauley averaged 14.4 points a game and was second in the ACC in field-goal percentage last season. More importantly, he had 115 assists and was the ACC's best passing big man.

Freshman J.J. Hickson has cost McCauley playing time but made the most of it. He's fourth in the ACC in scoring, seventh in rebounding and his 72.3 percent shooting from the field is by far the best in the league.

But Lowe has to get McCauley fully engaged. He's too valuable to waste and appears more comfortable as a starter.

Can anyone grab a rebound?

State does not have a starter shorter than 6-4 but can't keep teams off the offensive boards. How does that happen?

Rebounding isn't always about size and athleticism. It's about desire, about fighting for position and refusing to let the other guy get to the ball.

Certainly Lowe can find five players with the desire, with the willingness to press the flesh and go get the ball. Do that and the Pack can run more and pick up some easy transition baskets.

Can anyone hit a jump shot?

Brandon Costner said he hasn't found a shooting groove. The Pack badly needs him, and others, to find one -- soon -- or defenses will constantly collapse inside on Hickson.

Costner shot 47.4 percent from the field last year, 37.9 percent on 3s. This season, the 6-9 sophomore is shooting just 30.5 percent from the field and is 7-of-26 (26.9 percent) on 3s.

Not that Costner is the only player struggling. Courtney Fells has to be more consistent. Dennis Horner needs to be an outside threat. The Pack is 11th in the ACC in 3-point shooting and seventh in field-goal percentage.

"We need to make shots," Lowe said. "That's the big thing right now. We need to hit shots and put points on the board."

Why the scheduling gaps?

The game at East Carolina apparently was arranged by former coach Herb Sendek.

Herb's revenge, perhaps?

"I think it was a great experience," Lowe said. "To be a good team, you have to play in these environments."

Enough said on that point. It will be interesting to see if another Lowe team plays in Greenville again.

But the Pack went without a game from Nov. 28 to Dec. 8. Now it has a week off for exams. After S.C. State, there's another gap before a game against Davidson on Dec. 21.

Couldn't there have been a game scheduled at the RBC Center between Michigan State and East Carolina?

Who wants to play?

It can be a simple equation: no hustle, no play. Put five players on the floor who will play defense, will rebound, will play with intensity. Or else.

Team chemistry is a delicate thing. The Pack had good chemistry at the end of last season. It's searching for it now with Hickson at center and a new point guard in Farnold Degand.

But intensity and focus should be a given. No lazy passes, no relaxing on defense, no pouting or sulking on offense.

Shots are missed. Free throws are missed. A team may have tired legs. But there's no excuse for a lack of effort.

"We need to learn how to win," senior forward Gavin Grant said. "We need to learn how to finish games."

Better effort and improved concentration, especially on defense and on the boards, would be good starting points.

The only thing that bothers me is the constant its OK, we're still learning, blah blah blah that comes from Sid every time we lose a game

That line works for the loss against Michigan State to some degree; top 10 team, their place, hostile environment.....

But I dont care how much we are "learning"; we should beat NOU and ECU every time we step on the court; ECU is TERRIBLE!!! There is a reason they were previously 0-57 against ACC teams. NOU not much better.

Things need to be changed in a hurry or this could end up being one of the worst seasons in NCSU history based on our preseason expectations and talent level of this team. Get it together Sid.

how can you not see that that is just tarheel propaganda? They want us to feel good about our abysmal basketball team. They're attacking or psyche. If we feel good about the state of our team, we won't do anything to change it.

No good news coming from the N&O for NC State is actually good news. It's the Illumi-heels that not-so-secretly rule the press.

Yep, I don't know how you can call yourself a fan of state basketball and not know him. He had tons of minutes last year and proved him self quite unable to contribute much of anything. There was actually a noticeable trend in the early game this year correlating periods of shitty play and droughts when he was in the game...

It slipped my mind that Lowe was an assistant with the Pistons before he came here. Guess he wasn't responsible for coaching their defense.

Slightly better this week, but not good enough for ACC play. We didn't have to pay for turnovers and missing FTs. Davidson next.

Having a killer instinct means you want to show the other team how much better you are on every single play. Our team doesn't play the game like that. At best, hickson and grant play like that.

" Top 20 NCAA hoops disappointments
Jeff Goodman
FOXSports.com, Updated 4 hours ago

It's about that time. The gift of giving. The holiday season. Well, we're going to play the role of the Grinch and let you know who hasn't lived up to expectations thus far this college hoops campaign.

Biggest Disappointments

1. Sidney Lowe — The N.C. State head man is in his second season in Raleigh and inherited a talented team from Herb Sendek. If you want proof, check out last year's ACC tournament (they beat Duke, Virginia and Virginia Tech in successive days before running out of gas against UNC). However, Lowe has a team with virtually all of the same pieces and the Wolfpack are just 4-3 with losses to New Orleans and East Carolina — and a blowout at the hands of Michigan State. N.C. State doesn't appear to be playing with the same purpose as it did late last season and Lowe has made a mistake by cutting Ben McCauley's minutes so dramatically.

6. Brandon Costner — Sidney Lowe isn't the only one who needs to take some blame at N.C. State. There's plenty to go around. The talented, yet often lazy 6-9 sophomore is shooting a pitiful 31 percent from the floor and has made just 7 of 26 shots from long distance. He finished the season a year ago as one of the most dominant players in the nation (he had 30 points in an ACC tournament win against Duke), but appears to have read too many of his own press clippings or something.

granted we haven't been spectacular, but the play is starting to come around. they are being a lot smarter with the basketball and are much more cohesive as of late. i don't think giving up on the season a month before the first conference game makes a whole lot of sense

I don't think anyone has given up on the season but as of this point we are on the outside looking in of the NCAA tournament.

I don't think anyone wouldn't press the reset button on this season if they had the chance.

Beating a team when we were 11 point favorites and we took 72 FT's shouldn't be grounds for rubbing our nipples yet.
