In the opinion section of the Technician today (Friday 9/14) there's in a letter written by a Laura White where she says that this new proposed sustainability fee is a good thing and is an investment for the future. I just wanted to tell Laura that she's stupid. Improving the environmental efficiency of campus buildings save the university money. The money spent doing so should be put up by the university and not its students. The university takes a little less that 50% of all research grants to pay for exactly what this sustainability fee is supposed to pay for. Grant overhead and not your tuition pays for building improvements and that light bill. Basically, the university is giving students the bill for upgrades that save it, and not students, money when it's the university's job to pay for such upgrades. It's all a big scam.
She also says, "All of the energy at the University is acquired off campus and all involves the burning of petroleum products...." I guess she won't be getting that Progress Energy internship. I mean, you can see the steam plume from Sharon Harris on a clear from campus.

its practical for government officials to [supposedly] use all kinds of money to fly private to meetings etc etc
irs practical for the governor to call for stuff like raise freezes and have supervisors at places like DOT create jobs underneath themselves, therefore circumventing the rules and laws of the state by using loopholes to create new people to supervise, therefore changing their job class, and thereby getting a raise.
so yeah, i think its practical that everyone who has been in the nc tax base for more than X (where x is at least a few, i dont have a number here) years, then it is practical to give free school to the students 9/14/2007 9:24:33 AM |

just like taxes that come out of my paycheck i'd estimate about 60% of student fees go to crap and/or programs that are of in the fee appropriators/student governments interest.
i.e paying for those douches to sit around arguing bullshit in the student senate chamber while chowing down on pizza hut and starbucks coffee paid by yours truely 9/14/2007 9:40:03 AM |

To me this all comes down to the idea that students should pay for something that doesn't directly benefit them. 9/14/2007 10:27:50 AM |

aha hysterical
but then again not surprising
universities, governments, companies, any big institution can pretty much find interesting and creative ways of coloring, masking, and attempting to paint all the various ways they find to fuck their, students, employees, citizens out of money and then promptly waste it in some non constructive manner 9/14/2007 10:32:22 AM |

^^^ I don't argue that point. However, it's not the student's responsibility to pay for it. The university has funds specifically for things like this. 9/14/2007 10:36:59 AM |

I voted. I was really fucking annoyed by the Prop for Transit Ops...
Quote : | "Through the purchase of parking permits, faculty and staff contribute 20% toward the cost of operating the transit system, while comprising approximately 1% of the ridership. A disproportionate amount of parking revenue is being used to subsidize a transit system, which primarily serves the student population. Transportation believes the level of student support for the transit system must be increased or the reliability and integrity of the system will deteriorate. The student body should provide at least 80% of the funding for the transit contract, in addition to the Transit Visualization System and the U-Pass Program, which students have already agreed to support. No new transit service can be provided until the 80% contribution point is reached and maintained for both current and proposed new service levels." |
