I had no idea the Chargers picked up Derek Morris.

What a miserable season he's having. Went from being the one aspect of the game the Chargers never had to worry about...to the one aspect of the game that isn't coming through.

Defense - check
Special Teams - check
Running game - check
Philip Rivers and the passing game - WARNING

Last night was the choke of all chokes. Fumbled the snap before you hand it off to the running back to get into the middle of the field for field goal position. Holy fuck. I use to think he would be the one player that would break the NC State curse and actually win something besides a mid-tier bowl MVP. Not now. This guy is never going to get it done. For the first time ever, I think the Giants did the right thing on draft day.

One year out of 7, Eli still sucks.

wat

Defense choked in that game also
and the running game is a little better but I don't know if you noticed but the top 2 running backs are both out, and the replacement now has a concussion. Also Mathews with a critical fumble last night in the RZ.

How?? They gave up less than 300 yards in regulation and forced four turnovers. That is a GREAT defensive effort.

And 1 year with a Superbowl is better than 7 years without one.

Yeah...I watched the third string running back score their only touchdown of the game. He made the amazing catch to get it to the one yard line, then he made the great play on the 2 point conversion. That guy did great last night. Matthews has been playing well too. He did have one fumble...versus three turnovers on Philip.

You are not making good points.

plz to get this man out of san diego. unfortunately, he has a long ass contract x-tension.

not having practiced with gates and vjax routinely and for long stretches really hurts. rivers has such a quick motion (goodness knows that's the only thing quick on him) i'm suprised the bolts don't run a few more quick hitting routes. seems like every drop is a 5-7 step drop. and while philip is able to move around, like he did last night, he looks absolutely terrible in the pocket when it collapses and he is going to take a sure-sack.

i was hoping on the strip sack last night he was going to pick it up and make a play downfield, but i was reminded of his footspeed when he just flopped to the ground and fell on it.

losing sproles has really, really, really devalued rivers because of his elusiveness and blocking abilities.

I'm going to have to call bullshit on this.

Philip played very well last year with 3rd and 4th string wide receivers. Then Jax came back (after not practicing all year), and they lit it up in the final games of the season. He's been playing with these guys for YEARS.

He's also been overthrowing them. Did they all of a sudden shrink 6 inches?? Everyone needs to quit trying to find excuses and just admit that he's playing like shit right now.

^ agreed.

I will say, he actually looks a little quicker on his feet than he has in years past. Which still makes him pretty damn slow, but still.

thats debatable, I guess it depends on your definition of success and if its based on accomlishing team vs. individual goals.

I think Cris Carter made a great point today on Mike and Mike that Philip is still a great QB, and is still on the upslope of his prime, he is just having a bad year so far. He's still got plenty of time to turn it around, and even if he continues to struggle its not like his career is over or something. Didnt Brees look really bad and lead the league in turnovers for most of the year last year?

I do agree that losing Sproles has hurt Philip more than a lot of people thought it would.

With the decline of Gates, so goes the decline of Rivers. He can get into the redzone but teams are double teaming Gates and he can't break away since he isn't what he used to be. Rivers either needs to find a way to get it done without him or the chargers need to find another BIG TIME tight end. I don't know what the deal is with the overthrown balls. That needs to be fixed. Time will tell if he can overcome this crap season but with the upcoming schedule I doubt they will make the playoffs and Norv will be fired. The running game and special teams are much improved from last year.

Rivers isn't even in the same breath as Dan Marino. And Eli is a better QB than Dilfer.

So not a valid argument.

I don't think Gates is 100%, but he hasn't not declined that much. Kansas City just shut him down (although he still had something like 4 catches for 80 yds...would have had more if Rivers made a couple better throws). I mean, they had two guys jamming him at the line. It's almost impossible to get free from that, I don't care who you are.

Besides Rivers...Jackson needs to get open more. Or maybe Rivers just needs to give him a jump ball or two. Teams will keep doubling Gates until someone else starts to burn them. Right now, no one is doing that. Also, if San Diego (and Rivers) didn't turn the ball over so much in the beginning and could actually build a lead, then teams would have to gamble a little more on defense and they wouldn't be able to afford that extra man on Gates. They shot themselves in the foot all game last night. Its quite remarkable that they even had a chance to win after all the dumb shit that went down.

Maybe they need some kind of double tight end set like the Pats with Gronkowski and Hernandez. That seems to be working pretty well for them in the redzone (and for my fantasy team). Not sure if the Chargers have ran any with McMichael and Gates.

^They ran a 2-tight end set a few plays on that last drive before Rivers fumbled the snap. Almost everything about that game was infuriating. Awful.

Superbowls to determine how good (not great, which has little to do with good) a QB is not a valid argument either.

Terry Bradshaw was a great QB, but he wasn't really a very good QB.

It sure was a popular argument on here against Peyton for years... And then, EXACTLY as I predicted, once he won one, that wouldn't be enough. So stupid that people put so much credit/blame on QBs for Super Bowl win/losses. You give Peyton or P.Riv the defenses that Roethilsberger and Brady have had for years and I promise you they would each have a couple SB wins. Patriots haven't been to the super bowl since the Giants one and guess what, during that time period their defense got old, lots of defensive leaders retired or moved on (Harrison, Seymour, Bruschi, Samuel). Defense wins championships. Does that mean they will always win? No, but if you have a great defense around you for years you have a much better chance.

its funny how you say Rivers isnt in the same breath as Marino, yet that is the QB that he is compared to most often (not just stats but also his unorthodox throwing motion). Rivers isnt up to Marino's level yet, but he surely can be mentioned in the same breath, especially with the way he flirted with breaking Marino's single season yardage record just last season

Rivers is having a "bad" season by his standards but let's be realistic.

The Chargers defense is awful this season, they're ranked #26 by the metrics I follow and their special teams is ranked #29.

Their offense is ranked #15 overall and P-Riv is ranked #16 by DYAR.

This is just simply not a good Chargers team right now and it's been masked by their easy schedule so far. There is no one in that division that is in the top 20 in the NFL right now.

I won $400 last night b/c I had KC +3.5, +3, and +170 to win straight up. That might have been my best gambling win ever for size/style combination. Thanks P-Riv, you helped make up for all the terrible calls KC had go against them.

Why the hell didn't KC review that pass that San Diego dropped at the one yard line that set up the tying TD. Why the hell did the refs not overturn that awful fumble call in the red zone for McCluster? The Cassel fumble was 50-50 so I can't get too angry on that but that should have been the makeup call for the egregious Mccluster fumble.

Although, the Gates call was stupid too I agree, but at least that was a judgment call and not a reviewed play that clearly should have been overturned.

Because it was clearly a catch, that's why.

I wish you would tell us every time you lose a bet...like how you inform us when you win. Your post count would probably be triple what it is right now.

i don't bother reporting every game I bet on win or lose. Just wanted to point out I've never won a game on something that lucky.

And no, that was definitely not a catch he trapped it and then lost control of it immediately.

To win the division yes

But with the Jets losing they have a small but plausible chance at the 6th seed.

What happens if Oakland, SD, and Denver tie? I know they lose the tie-break to Denver if it is just them two.

Well, it won't happen. But if Oakland, SD and Denver all tie, they tie at 8-8. In that scenario, either the Chargers lose to Detroit or Oakland. If they lose to Oakland, that means that there is a 4-way tie at 8-8, and the Chiefs win the tiebreaker. If they lose to Detroit and beat Oakland, I believe that Denver wins the tiebreaker due to common opponents.

The only way the Chargers win the division is if they win out (on the road against Detroit and Oakland) and Denver loses out (@ Buf, home against KC). They probably have a better chance at the last wildcard, since if they end up tied with a couple teams at 9-7, they advance in most tiebreaker scenarios. They just have to hope that the Jets and the Bengals lose 1 of their next 2 games.
