It's getting closer and closer to that time of year, boys and girls.

Due to Jaybee or Volcom's wildly successful thread last year, I thought we should go ahead and get one started to talk about Draft Status, and later on Sit/Start, Injury updates, and inside info that may affect fantasy football.

Hopefully this will be the only thread about this, so Gunzz doesnt blow a fuse like he did last season.

So, Lets kick off the season by sorting out Draft Status. Who is you number one pick?

Alexander? I believe he led the league in Rushing TD's last year and was an awesome player to have. 1880 Rushing yards, 28 combined TD's

Larry Johnson? Only started 9 games last season but went the hell off with 1750 yds rushing, 340 receiving, and 21 combined TD's. Bananas.

Tomlinson? They will have to go to him early and often to keep Rivers comfortable this season. Finished last season with 1462 rushing yards, 370 receiving, 20 combined TD's PLUS 3 throwing. Probably the most dynamic player of all three.

So with that said....WHO IS YOUR NUMBER ONE PICK?

- The Guru.

If I had the pick, I'd take LJ. LT was amazing at the beginning of last season, but fell off some later when teams keyed on him more. I think this season, atleast until Rivers proves himself, teams are going to gameplan their Ds against LT and make Phil beat them through the air. Thus I think at the beginning of the season, LT's production will be down.

Im Amazed that no one thinks it should be Alexander.

Rushing Title last year and most TD's scored. How can you not go with him?

I'd definitely take Larry Johnson #1.

Alexander got the contract he was looking for and is a laid back guy. Johnson is the asshole with the chip on his shoulder and the contract to earn. Priest is old, so im not too worried about splitting carries...

ALso, Seattle has the easier division & schedule (4 TD game potential for Shaun )but they will likely clinch early again making alexander less valuable come playoff time... OTOH, Kansas City will likely be dogging it out for a wild card or division title in weeks 16 & 17....

I take the fresh legs in this situation and go with LJ without thinking about it twice.

The Official Guru gives this thread his seal of approval...

I got a keeper question to throw around to you all:

14 team league
2 keepers each
point based scoring system
receptions are 1pt each
TDs 6, 25 yards = 1 pt rushing and receiving
30 yard = 1 point passing

my potential keepers are: Shaun Alexander, Julius Jones, Marvin Harrison, T.O., Carson Palmer

Alexander is obvious... Palmer was going to be #2 until the injury... so who should the second keeper be?

T.O.?

What do you guys think about Tatum Bell? I have been reading alot about him and how this is his year to explode. Everyone says the talent is there and many guys are saying he should be a fantasy 1st rounder (in a 12-team basic league). Plus everyone knows Denver's primary back is going to put up numbers so I think it could be a good late 1st round gamble.

I EXPECT BIG THINGS FROM JONES THIS YEAR, especially with a legitimate threat at WR to open up the offense.

Its difficult to go with T.O. considering his past as well as who will bve throwing him the ball. You just cant trust Bledsoe.

Marvin is gonna be relied on heavily this year and I expect big passing numbers from Manning.

I still say Jones, but Marvin is a close 2nd.

I think T.O. is the easy choice....

There's a lot of depth at RB right now and theres plenty of guys who could finish with similar or better numbers than jones... jones is also injury prone.

TO is a fucking force and he's gonna produce like crazy in the big D. Bledsoe, while not a great QB due to his immobility and tendency to take sacks, is a good numbers guy... he's got a big arm and he should be able to get the ball downfield where T.O. can exploit the defense.

If T.O. put up monster numbers with lame duck arms like D.McNabb and J.Garcia, imagine what he can do when paired up with a guy like Bledsoe who has a cannon...

Marvins numbers have been in decline, and without Edgerrin to open up the passing game i dont expect them to get better... i think you could make a case for Marvin not even being the best fantasy WR on his own team this year...

The Seahawks lost a dominating OL in Hutchinson, Alexander's numbers will still be good because he's a great RB but I don't think they'll be as good as last season's.

remember folks....

draft QB's in the later rounds. A 6th or 7th round QB is almost as effective as a 2nd or 3rd round QB.

Bulger or Hasselbeck are much closer to Manning and Palmer than Droughns and McGahee are to Johnson and Alexander.

Translation: The difference between the top QB's and the 2nd and third tier is much smaller than that of the Running Backs.

DRAFT RUNNING BACKS EARLY AND OFTEN!

I know Panthro, and as a Saints fan I would love to see Deuce break out if only to silence the starry-eyed zombies that make up the majority of Saints fans now.

I still can't believe we're going to pay $50 million to a guy who will be listed no higher than 2nd on the depth chart at any position.

Luckily I'm in a keeper league and I have LT and LJ(great FA pick-up last season, haha), so I'm set at RB. May look at picking up a late-round back-up plan at RB.

And don't bet the farm on Julius Jones. I expected a lot from him last season, but he faded in and out of the scene due to injuries and such. The run game will be opened up more with the serious passing threats, but I don't expect Jones to last the full season and I expect he'll share carries most of the season.

Reggie Bush? Let the suckers take him early, he isn't worth a pick really. He'll see most of his PT on special teams and as a back-up RB and slot WR. Deuce will start unless he gets injured, at that point then look at Bush, because a healthy Brees with their WR core they could actually find a good bit of success if their OL can show up.

This year the #1 choice in most leagues will be between the the "big 3", but I'm hesitant to recommend any of them. I mean on the surface they are ALL big-time performers, but I'm not sure I expect big numbers from all of them.

Shaun Alexander - the loss of Hutchinson will be bigger than most think, he really helped Jones on that OL and I doubt they'll find a T nearly as good to step in. Let's also not forget about the Madden curse, as this year he is on the cover, as well as the Superbowl losers curse.

LJ - freakish end of the season last year, but let's not forget that the OL is aging and tends to be hurt often. If the OL is healthy and the WR's can do ENOUGH to help him out, he could repeat those freakish numbers all season and possibly put up record numbers, but I'm not sold on the age of that offense.

LT - As said before, he is the most complete back in the league, but at the same time, he is working with a new QB and defenses know that he is the biggest threat on that team. If Philip can step in early and show the goods, then LT could be in for another great season. LT and Philip's successes this year will depend a lot on each other.

How about a break-down of everyone's top 5 at each position? We'll take the predictions now, and then compare them at the end of the season, could be interesting. I know I almost messed up big-time last pre-season when I almost traded a buddy of mine Steve Smith for Randy Moss, that REALLY worked to my advantage.

top 5 by position, imo (all these are based off fantasy numbers alone and not wins/losses)

QB
P. Manning / IND
T. Brady / NE
M. Hasselbeck / SEA
J. Delhomme / CAR
M. Bulger / STL
(note: I left Palmer off because of his injury. No telling how he will recoup from that. Also I'm pretty much holding out on giving props to Brees, Culpepper, Young, & Leinart since they're all new to their teams. In a pinch, I'd suggest those four along with Plummer and McNabb.)

RB
S. Alexander / SEA
L. Tomlinson / SD
L. Johnson / KC
T. Barber / NYG
C. Portis / WAS
(note: Edgerrin James is actually top 5 here, but again, the changing teams thing bit him in the ass. I'd sub out Portis if all things were equal. Also the top 3 are not in any order, they're 1, 1A, and 1B. If you can get any of these guys, do it. My next level guys, A. Green, Deuce, and D. Davis, are all coming off of injuries. I'll round out this list with the Auburn boys and Willis McGahee.)

WR
S. Smith / CAR
L. Fitzgerald / ARI
M. Harrison / IND
T. Holt / STL
S. Moss / WAS
(note: no TO, Chad Johnson, Joe Horn, or Randy Moss? Exactly. If I were making a top 10, they'd all be on it, but all of the guys I just mentioned are locks to catch 90 balls. Moss & Horn are getting new QBs on an old team, TO is going to a new team, and I can't even name Cincy's second-string guy if Carson can't go. Hines Ward finishes off the top 10 while Anquan Boldin sits just on the outside looking in.)

TE
A. Gates / SD
A. Crumpler / ATL
R. McMichael / MIA
T. Gonzalez / KC
J. Shockey / NYG
(note: Cooley and Witten should be in here as well, and they'd crack a top 10. Heath Miller and Todd Heap figure to be huge this year also.

make no mistake, he is the premier option in washington. like i said, overall talent is hedged in favor of numbers that the players will put up as a result of their teams' systems.

at this point, brandon lloyd is a crapshoot, and randle el will be used to throw the occasional wr reverse pass. It was a huge debate between moss, boldin, and deion branch, but I feel that Moss has the least distractions surrounding him (Clinton Portis interviews notwithstanding).

#1 pick is definitely LT for me...

as far as WR goes, Moss and Smith i think are top notch

TE for me is Witten. I picked him in the 11th round last year and he was one of the most productive TE's in the NFL...and one of the Cowboys top receivers.

KICKER: Vinatieri...
U cant go wrong with him to begin with, and then factor in him playing in a dome now = $$$$

This is a Yahoo Public league I joined last night just to get ready for the real deal next month...

I am Team Two..

Team one: Hines Ward, T.O. and Kevin Jones <--for--> Team two: Eli Manning, Deion Branch, and Curtis Martin.

On paper it looks like a shitty deal, but team one really needs a QB, Big Ben is his starter. I really need a WR, I am starting Santana Moss, Deion Branch, and David Givens. I also have Trent Green on the Bench. my RB's are solid. Tiki, Ronnie Brown, and Rueben Droughns.

This team sucks but I want to wheel and deal...would you make this trade if you were team 1?

lj played like a third of the season last year and put up phenomenal numbers.

he will break alexander's record this year, unless he breaks something else first.

I'm in a yahoo public league just cause I was bored at work and wanted to do a live draft to pass the time

I had the second pick in the draft, and I was shooting for LJ to fall to me, but LT and Alexander wouldve done just fine also

the dude with the first pick took Reggie Bush #1...I immediately lost all hope in having a competitive league after that

I picked up the Bears defence in the 6th round (someone picked up the steelers defence in the 5th round for some reason)

and the ravens defence dropped down to the 14th round

With the retirement of Willie Roaf, I think LJ just lost some value and I think Tony Gonzalez might have lost even more. Without a proven left tackle they'll go back to the way they were at the beginning of last season which feature almost no fantasy numbers from Tony Gonzalez.
