I think K is a pale imitation of his mentor (they both have three titles, but Knight won those with what I would consider less talent, and by creating defenses that had never been seen before).

Roy did well at Kansas, but still never won a title there.

duke and ncstate are "we"

and all this stuff about the tourney you guys are saying is complete bs. every big time player gets calls against average players in almost every sport. jj doesnt get shutdown in the ncaas, he chokes. hes gotten several open opportunities in these games and just missed them. the michigan state team had just as much if not more talent than duke and this was the 2nd game they played that season. its alot tougher to beat a really good team twice in row and so far jj has just cracked under the ncaa pressure. and jj will not be playing anywhere near 40minutes per game this season. much more depth.

as for uconn, in the nc game a while back coach k may of had a better team but uconn was the 2nd best team that year so i wouldnt say coach k got outcoached losing by 3. duke just got outexecuted.
in the final four game uconn was a much better team and by no means did coach k get outcoached. duke was in control of the game until the compilation of big men fouling out (shav and sheldon) allowed okafor (the best player in the nation) to take over the last few minutes of the game.

The starting five of the 99 team would absolutley wax the starting lineup of the 05 team, yet both are preseason #1, must be lack of talent this year. Actually the bench of the 99 team would ocmpete with the starters of the 05 team. Duke loses 3 conference games for certain, likely 4, and 5 if one of the lower tier team gets them. I mean, they have 2 proven offensive threats, Nelson and Dockery aren't, their Frosh will be depeneded upon heavily, and I don't see shades of Webber, Rose, and Howard yet...

^^ a little bit of it is an overall lack of talent and alot of it is the fact that that was one of the most talented teams ever so of course they would wax your average preseason #1. the bench of that team definatly wouldnt compete (unless you mean the players that were on that bench later in their caeer

nelsons not an offensive threat? see feb 2
melchioni is not an offensive threat? hes one of the best set shooters in the country

worst case scenario for the freshman is mcroberts being the only scoring threat out of them but by the end of the season paulus will be a good setup man and pocius will be a decent scorer. he lead the jr team usa in scoring this summer.

That team is still regarded as the best Duke team of all time I think...better than the NC teams in 91,92, and 01. Everyone still thinks it was a fluke that they lost in the championship game that year.

Socrates, Demarcus Nelson is not a "consistent" offensive threat. Macaroni's good looks are set up by JJ's mere attendance in the building, let alone on the court. He's also a defensive liability. You combine Macaronni's offensive shot with Dockery's defensive skills, yea you gotta complete player. I'm just saying they have two "proven" offensive weapons. Dook will have 3-5 games where the play of Frosh will decide the outcome, and I would say they succeed 50% of the time, so I think the Frosh alone will cost them 2 CONF. games, especially on the Road. Also, factor in 4 conference games where the UFO get's into foul trouble early in the first half...Greg Newton and Eric Meeks will not be there to bail him out.

Socrates, correct me if I'm wrong, the bench in 99 was Maggette, Nate James, Carasmell, Burgess,? Those 4 (who's missing?) would compete with the starters of 05...

WolfAApack, I'm sure Rchard Hamilton, Kahlid-El-Amin, Jake Voskul, and Caron Butler (young in 99) would disagree with you about it being a fluke. All 4 of those guys made an NBA roster at one time

i was pretty impressed with mcroberts and paulus in their first games...

also, boston plays a lot like we do, so that was a pretty tough first game...i watched the entire thing and it really felt closer than it was the entire game...whether you like duke or hate them...it's the first game and it's too early to tell...lol

Caron Butler didn't play in '99. Duke was vastly more talented but I wouldn't call it 'a fluke'..

As for tonight. Yea I think that Duke will dominate any team that wants to try and bang with them except maybe the inside games of Texas, Mich St, and UConn.. A team like us might give them a bit of trouble if we can make Shelden come out to play the perimeter.

I got the feeling that this team will reach it's full potential about the time the ACC schedule starts.. which is bad for the Acc unfortuately. McRoberts struck me as very raw still but with incredible potential that can be reached this year. I think Duke is the prohibitive favorites to win the ACC in a landslide and then cautious favorites to win it all (Texas and UConn -- if MW is effective coming back starting in January) in my mind..

Question for you MOODY.. Are we going to see much of Boetang or is he going to be more of an observer this year..

Boateng will not play much, only in foul trouble situations and even then he will be limited because Patrick Johnson will log some minutes. I must say though that Boateng was more developed than i expected him to be at this point.

I'm just telling you what the Duke fans think. That was a bad game to lose. Elton Brand and Maggette have had better careers than all of them except RIP, plus you had Battier and William Avery, and wasn't Langdon still playing in 99(I dont know)? ...plus the bench you mentioned

I personally think the NC team in 2001 was a lot better, but a lot of Duke fans disagree. They had Jason Williams, Battier, Boozer, Dunlevy, and Chris Duhon...all in the NBA now (well Jay fucked up), and Nate James and a few others off the bench. The only weakness they had that year was sloppy play in the first half of games, and they were only about 7 deep. They had some nasty comeback wins...especially against MD...which I really dont mind seeing...ever.

The best Duke team ever has to either be '86 or '92. '99 may have had the most talent but they weren't the best team.

i'm calling yes on this one. college basketball is notorious for overly officiating games the first half of the season. sheldon and mcroberts ARE going to get in foul trouble during this stretch and boateng is going to have to contribute...i was very surprised that he didn't get any minutes tonight because he's going to need to at least be a shavlik randolph off the bench. we can't have another matt christianson...LET'S GO...

jamal boykins is very raw too...he's like dockery with more offensive flair, but he's going to be duke's human victory cigar behind dockery, redick, nelson, paulus, and pocius (future melchionni...great shooter and that's about it)

i can't wait until uconn and texas are on tv...i agree with bilas about texas having the most talent, but i think duke and uconn will have better records...

By the way...didn't didn't look invincible last night.

They'll still be top 5 and win the ACC...but they'll get a couple L's in league play this year. Hopefully with one coming from us.

I dont think any realistic Duke fan thinks they are invincible. The first few games are just to get the rust off. I could care less how they look as long as they win these early games.

Two things.. I think Duke is head and shoulders above the other two because they have the combination of talent and experience (not too many teams return TWO 4 year guys like Redick and Williams) but I believe the best player will be Rudy Gay. Also, UConn won't have their floor leader until January. I fully expect a loss or maybe even two out in Maui because a middle-tier recruit named Austrie will be running point. Once the kid who shouldn't be on the team anymore anyway Marcus Williams returns it will be a different team.

we will see how good this duke team is when they could possibly play ucla in the nit and then at indiana nov. 30, and vs. texas dec. 10(i think) in nj. I expect them to beat ucla and indiana (dj white is out) with no problems. Texas will be a battle. Good thing for duke its not out in austin.

Might want to watch that again. Barely any contact.. It would have been better though. Then he would've had a 1 and 1 in a 3 pt game with .5 seconds left. No chance for a 3 pointer then..

V I have it on tape

As I do the NCSU-UConn game last year.. actually watched the second half of that game recently!

^^^No Langdon was not fouled and he should have given the ball to William Avery who was not being guarded. Man that brings up really really really bad memories. That game hurt worse than the entire 94-95 season.

that play by jay had to have been the greatest tourney play of all time but it isnt even remembered because he missed the free throw. i think thats a ripoff it was still a great play. a pg runs in, rebounds the desperation 3 backs up and finds his way into a foul while shooting the 3 cans the 3 and gets the call. tell me a play more improbable than that.

and then maryland won it all

although Lee Maccaroni is a douche bag, I must say he is much better than that other role player they had a few years ago...Nick Horvath. God I hated that guy, and he was SOOOOOO bad.

As a matter of fact...I wish he was still there since I cut my duke fanhood.

he probably got that from the broadcast last night...2 of the announcers said "melchionni is one of the best set shooters in the country. if he is left open he will knock it down"

melchionni is a great shooter though...and dockery is hitting open looks...having the best in the country argument is a moot point because all that matters is if they hit the big shots and the open shots...which they both did last year...
