In this case, you don't even have a whole nation (just a terrorist group) attacking another country. we don't necessarily want war, we want resolution. War seems like the only way to resolve the conflict because the likelihood that we can locate the specific person who committed, read: engineered the act, this act is unlikely.
However, since this attack is most likely associated with Usama bin Laden, and we have somewhat reliable sources that locate him in Afganistan, we can work out a deal with the gov't there. Either look under every bush to find him and hand him over, or we attack the entire area. No questions asked. The only way the American public is going to let this issue rest, or subside from deep emotions, is for our gov't to take a violent measure against a guilty party.

Another reaction would be to attack any individual or country that is, harbors, assists, or refuses to release information about a terrorist.

Over the course of human beings, wars and battles have been fought in many ways. The way you fight wars changes, technology changes and with these changes - strategies change. Knocking out the trade center and some pentagon can have other precussions that can hurt the US in ways other than death.

If these people remain anymous and continue hits like that throughout the next few years, the US could go through some difficult times.

However, this tactic is very crude - as with every war it is a general rule not to violate innocent citizens.

This changes our country forever. The economic implications are forever, and listed in another thread. This threatens our way of life, our sense of freedom, and our sense of safety and security in our own country. Again, I do not flat out support the death of innocent civilians, but when our way of life is threatened, I don't think our government is just going to sit and watch. War may be inevitable, and if it is, I'll support my country, regardless of decision.
