^^which do you prefer on a curvy road like that? Mr2 or TDI?

I would have preferred the MR2 if it was running. I've honestly not had a chance to really drive it til I was tired like that, but it broke down right as I got it all set up for autocross. I've driven it about 10k miles total.

The TDI is very forgiving and my driving skill in snappy RWD cars is in heavy development, so it's probably not a bad thing that I was in the VW for my first drive on that road. I've never been on a twisty road with no traffic for so long. It actually became quite a chore. Generally I'll get stuck behind a line of cars after a few corners and just yearn the rest of the drive. This time it was seriously deserted though. I think I saw 6 cars come the opposite direction, and really only got behind one along the whole 209 route.

After I warmed up the first couple miles I got into a trance-like rhythm and was floating from corner to corner til I got stuck behind a pickup truck about 20 miles in. He was seriously getting it though (way in the other lane through turns...) my tires were still making noise going through the corners (in my lane) as I was following him. I'll definitely be going back in the MR2 after I get an engine in it

replaced the coolant expansion tank on the cayenne and that fixed all my cooling issues! was worried it might be the dreaded coolant pipe issue but temps held up in bumper to bumper holiday traffic on a 90+ degree day, so I'll called it fixed.

will replace the broken motor mount I discovered in the process and convert the headlights to LED bulbs and probably add a new tow hitch (who puts a class 1 on anything?!)

Worked on the 2001 camry grocery getter. Replaced the brake pads and hammered out and replaced 2 wheel studs while I was at it. Topped it off with an oil change and she's good to go for a while.

Replaced the transmission fluid in the Cayman. Used Porsche recommended Mobil Delvac gear oil instead of the OEM Porsche fluid which is $40/quart. Accessing the drain and fill plugs requires the removal of 2 suspension cross beams and a support plate, so all said and done this took about 3 hours.

About 3 weeks ago, I had a fuel line burst (luckily on priming, not rolling down the road). All these years, I had used fuel return line rated for 50 psi for my high pressure side. I ASSumed the stuff you buy by the foot was good for general fuel duty Anyways, no more worries:


A few weeks before that, I upgraded to 300ZX brakes on the front
FYI stock is single-piston, 10" rotor. Now it's 4-piston, 11" rotor

had a defective light and ballast on the driver side after LED conversion. checked the mail on the way to dinner and the replacement arrived so I swapped it in the driveway before I left. works great. I recommend OPT7 replacements for your older H7/9005 style halogen bulbs.

I attempted to change the oil in my Golf Sportswagon on Sunday. I say attempted because the process is far more complicated than it needs to be, and fuck Volkswagen because I'm not wasting my time for something as basic as an oil change.

To access the drain pan an underbody panel needs to be removed (6 screws, 3 bolts)
To access the oil filter, in a tight clearance area, you need to disconnect 2 wiring harnesses and work around a coolant hose.

^^ not the end of the world if you drive 15k/year. That would have been every 9-10 weeks when I was commuting to Mobile at my old engineering job. That would probably be prohibitive for owning that car in that situation--and that's exactly the situation for where a TDI is useful to begin with.

That pisses me off that they were stupid or manipulative enough to design it that way.

Maybe I'm desensitized but short of some Porsches, most of the cars from the last decade that are meant to go vroom typically at least have a belly pan that must be removed. My 2005 Volvo V70 sounds no worse than this VW...

Put new brake pads on the Kia 2 weekends ago. Subsequently some asshat had a pallet fall off his truck and break up leaving debris over the road, which my wife drove over (which was really all she could do with cars on either side). So Costco got to replace the 2 flattened tires. At least they were prorated from the road hazard warranty.

The Fusion has been vacuumed. LOL.

The Crown Vic and the Volvo continue their career as back-of-driveway ornaments and property value depressors. (Though I really want to get rid of the Vic before the baby comes in December...)

^^^that's for the gasoline wagon. Mine is the diesel. And the fact that the gasoline one is so freaky easy to work on only infuriates me more.


Anyways...for the past 5 days the VW has been rented out on Turo. lol

In the meantime on Saturday I replaced the Integra's front upper control arms. And on Sunday I swapped my Pagid Yellow pads back onto the Cayman, as well as flushed out all the old brake fluid and replaced with Motul RBF600.

Both rear speakers quit working. I was able to remove them a week ago without removing any body panels (praise deity!) unplug them and then plug them back in...suddenly they worked perfectly. A few days later, one speaker is going out again. I guess the issue is the speaker connector on both speakers? makes sense they'd have similar failure modes.

Still working on the other civic. Getting it ready for Frozen Frenzy @ VIR in February... Basic JDM H22 swap, nothing fancy... Just a lot of labor



Anddd the motor is out... that's about as far as I've gotten I mean, I'm further along than that... but nothing worth really talking about... Going to be dropping the motor in by new years weekend... Getting the wiring and cable shifter all sorted out, as well as the battery relocation to the trunk. Lots of work on the inside...

A while back, I changed the rear end gear oil on the truck. One of the bolts wrung off when I was putting the cover back on, but it didn't leak, so I didn't sweat it. Well, it started to leak, so I pulled the cover again. Between a scratch awl and a diamond point cold chisel, I was able to get the old one out. Went back with a real gasket this time instead of just the RTV. Letting the gasket sealer cure tonight and I'll fill it back up tomorrow. Changed the oil and replaced the headlight lamps. Rotated the tires and found a CV boot busted, so I went ahead and ordered a full set of boots. Ordered new shocks as well because the ride has gotten real spongy.

Getting close to 200k on it. Engine was replaced at 180k.

^^Nice! I recently picked a 93 CB7 in pretty decent shape. Dropped in a H22A from a 97 Accord SiR wagon and used the original stock transmission. Gearing was way too long. Between gears it would drop out of vtec. Just picked up a T2T4 transmission. Currently replacing r&p but I'll swap transmissions soon. But so far the car is super fun.

Yeah. This swap has been pretty straight forward. The cold weather has been a PITA though, slowing down a lot of work. I'm having to relocate the brake proportioning bodies further down the firewall, closer to the passenger side, to clear the intake manifold. It's snug in that bay. not a lot of room, just plenty enough. My 944 swap was definitely the definition of a "hair to too big for the bay". I can make this work, just a lot of "little" setbacks that the forums don't tell you about... I'm looking forward to making the new brake lines, clutch line, finishing the exhaust, and starting her up!
