Apparently the Iowa State head coach, Matt Campbell, is favored, but it would be a move that makes sense if he wanted to get back to his midwestern roots. Not something I've heard floated around in previous coaching searches, though, despite plenty of openings in the meantime. Hell, even in late 2017 when he was known to be talking with Tennessee and Nebraska was hiring Frost, I don't remember hearing his name in that coaching search at all, and that was fresh off two of his best seasons.

I saw his name mentioned by Pete Thamel (or somebody like that) on Twitter. Maybe they’ll look at him. But if I was a Nebraska fan I’d be underwhelmed by Doeren. But also if I’m Doeren, I wouldn’t wanna go to Nebraska and play in a tougher conference at a job with higher expectations/pressure than State. 8-4 is fine at State. It probably gets you fired at Nebraska. Unless they’ve really adjusted expectations since Bo Pelini was fired. But Nebraska has that B1G money so I’m sure they can offer an absurd amount. Hard to turn down $8M/year or whatever they’d offer.

Sounds like Matt Campbell is their #1 target. Again, not sure why he’d leave the job security he has at Iowa State for Nebraska. But there again, if Nebraska can triple your current salary then you probably take the job.

Also Nebraska is a TERRIBLE job. I don't know if there's a worse P5 job based on expectations vs reality. Nebraska fans think they should be competing for national championships every year when in reality they have no recruiting base and lag behind the big boys in every facet. Nebraska football boosters make NC State basketball fans look like sane, rational individuals.

At this point I'd be incredibly surprised to see Doeren uproot his family to take on an impossible task like making Nebraska good. I think it was in that Ruffin piece where it said his dad with Alzheimers is in California(?) and he wished he could see him more, so if he went anywhere I'd expect it to be in that area, not Nebraska.

Ruffin's dad with Alzheimer's is in Lumberton, it's why he left the Oklahoma job.

And personally I don't remember DD's name coming up before the Frost hire; I did some searching online real quick to check and didn't see anything either but it wasn't exhaustive and I may've forgotten.

Otherwise, though, I pretty much agree with you.
